To learn about McCain's life and struggles and experience as a prisoner of war for several years, is to understand how his generous and giving nature evolved. He wanted officials to be bi partisan in their decisions. And all was for the sake of the people. We cannot say that his stature still can be found. If more readers comprehended the soul of this senator, maybe the conflicts and animosity would cease and desist.

Great read, full of information and history.

Great book on John McCain. Really interesting

Looks like a great book about a true American hero, no matter what side of the fence you’re on. Haven’t had a chance to read it, as i’mbut backed up w/a stack of books .I will re-review after I read it. Looks really good & lots of good picture.about a true American hero and an honorable man who will be sorely missed.

John McCain was arguably one of the brightest and talented politicians in Washington. He crossed party lines to do what was right for the country, not to a party. He was a POW and veteran yet he never let that stand in the way of his goals. The images captured in this book brought chills up and down my spine as I relived moments I have studied and read about.

I was expecting a Story of this man's life. This book is basically a picture book, not a novel.

Bought this for an elderly neighbor at her request. She loved McCain appreciated the book. The rating is for her. She and I disagree politically, but I love her anyway.

Lots of nice pictures but not a comprehensive book about McCain's life.

Call me crazy, but I loved this story. Yeah, it's kind of weird, but I've always had an off-beat sense of humor and I found it hilarious. I also thought the ending was perfect, and a good ending can make or break a book for me. I felt Jonathon was the perfect comedy hero, perplexed, bewildered and astonished by most of what goes on around him. Yet he always seemed to do the right thing at the right time, whether it was what he'd planned to do or not. I lost track of how many times I just burst out laughing while reading this, but my wife can tell you it was a LOT! Ha!Be aware that this story is based in London and I'll admit the British expressions sometimes stymied me, but with a touch of my finger my Kindle Paperwhite would tell me what the expressions meant, so don't let that discourage you. If you've ever liked the "Far Side" cartoons or off-beat humor then I bet you'll like this. I do recommend it.

I was drawn to this book because sometimes I like to read novels similar to the ones I write myself: books with humor and plenty of intelligent and witty dialogue. When I looked at a sample I liked its style, and the rest of the book didn't disappoint me.The characters are engaging and likable - even the bad guys are presented in a well-rounded way that keeps them from being two-dimensional nasties. For example, one ruffian is kind to his family and by all appearances a great father. That doesn't mean you like him, but you might as well enjoy being inside his head for entire chapters. And Lance, who is not a bad guy, seems like this suave ladies man, but we also see his vulnerable side, and he and the other male lead both show character growth as the story progresses. This book also features strong and/or witty female characters, something I don't feel I see enough of in novels.I have a few small critiques, so small that they didn't lessen my enjoyment of the book overall. We follow the various characters closely one at a time in each chapter. So we sort of hear their thoughts and feelings. Both Jonathon and Lance have witty thought processes, which is great, but I found these internal voices were almost the same voice. I would have liked to be able to tell their thought processes apart better. Also, we often hear only one side of phone conversations, like you would in a movie or TV show. But I don't think it works quite so well in a book when we are so close to the characters' internal thoughts as I mentioned above. If we hear and see everything as if we are in their heads, it seems like we should hear the other side of the conversation. But like I said, it didn't detract much from my reading pleasure. Perhaps the only reason I noticed these things is because I am a writer myself. Finally, the crime and the conspiracy that drive the action in the book is not very ambitious, but then again it has the allure of being unique - not your usual plot with elaborate government cover-ups, numerous explosions and double-crosses so that the characters never know who to trust. To me the characters and their interactions were the best part of the book, so I am fine with the less intense nature of the criminal goings-on. I will say no more about that so as not to give anything away.So if you like humor and a touch of adventure and romance, I recommend The Perpetual Astonishment of Jonathon Fairfax, and I will certainly give any future novels by this author a try.

If you like gore, serial killers, and suspense, even then you might like this book (which is nothing like that at all). It's a funny, gentle, sardonic story about people caught in a series of politics-motivated crimes (starting with an unusual murder in the first chapter), and involving naive and awkward Jonathon. He goes through life tripping over his feet (and over the murderer, described by his niece as a "gentle bear", and who is a thug for hire, but a really likeable one). Unexpected turns at each chapter, since the writer (and Jonathon's life) have no connection with reality. Thus, conversations are not sensible, and the book goes through a sequence of crimes (from big to petty) all committed in the most unexpected places. I like gore, serial killers and suspense, but nevertheless liked this story - a welcome change. I was attracted by the "british humor" advertisement, and it met these expectations.

When Christopher Shevlin sat down to write this book, the spirit of Douglas Adams sidled up next to him and said, "Here, let me help you." This book is probably - definitely - the funniest thing I have read since The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I seriously found myself rethinking whether or not I believed in reincarnation. I don't mean to say that Shevlin's work isn't original - it is. I mean this as the highest compliment I can think of. Christopher Shevlin's work is brilliant, snort-pop-out-the-nose funny, heart-warming and sweet, and I would need a thesaurus to keep describing it.The main character, Jonathon Fairfax, brings a whole new meaning to the term "reluctant hero." I loved him. He is the only character that I have ever read that has about as much of a low self esteem as I do. Seriously. This guy, I loved, and I want more of him in more stories. The writing was superb, even if the story might have lagged in some points. For some of my friends who are sensitive about such things, I will warn you that he does use some vulgar language (he manages to creatively use just about every bad word at least once, but not to the point of "too much" - though it comes close.) There are a few places where it is a little gross too, so just beware of that if you sensitive to such things. For instance, Shevlin gave me words to describe my next headache: one character's head hurt so bad that it made him feel like he wanted to "vomit (excrement) from his eyes." THAT perfectly describes what I feel like when I have a migraine. :-)But, If you love British humor, mystery stories, or just excellent, clever, writing you will love this book.I absolutely love this book, I love it with great big pink puffy hearts of love. I will be looking forward to Shevlin's next book.

By far my favorite conditioning book. Easy to read. Lots of pictures. Worth the buy to have as an aerialist or instructor.

You can't go wrong with a Jill franklin book!

I'm really happy with this book. As an aerial student I'm familiar with some of these exercises, but there are a few I didn't know so it was totally worth it. Live this author.

I'm an aerial instructor and performer and I love having this as a resource for both myself and my students. This is the next best thing to actually having Jill to train with in person, as it is thoroughly infused with her confident & kind teaching style all the way through. I especially appreciate how clearly Jill explains technique tips to help the reader understand the important components and concepts of each exercise. While this guide is obviously geared toward the aerial performer, it would be a great resource for anyone looking to increase their strength and mobility. Get it! You won't be disappointed.

Aerial requires a unique combination of strength, flexibility, and poise. This book covers a wide variety of exercises catered towards aerialists but useful for all fitness disciplines as well. There are well written and easy to follow instructions and lots of helpful pictures. I also appreciated that the book included pictures of a man demonstrating some of the movements so that the pictures could be relatable to different genders and body types. I'm looking forward to trying out several of the exercises from this book.

True to Jill's teaching style, this book is very methodical and incredibly clear. The instructions for every exercise and the tips are so straightforward that anyone, no matter their fitness level, can follow them and understand how their body is supposed to move and feel. I love it and highly recommend it!

YES!!! The Aerial Industry has needed this type of reference manual! As an Instructor and Performer, always being asked for more tips and home workout moves to improve strength and flexibility! So excited to add this to my current library of Jill Franklin Books!

Jill Franklin's Aerial Physique Empire does not disappoint as expected. The color illustrations make the step by step instructions easy to understand and helps your achieve the correct technique. As an Aerialist and instructor, aerial arts specific strength training my students and myself take you to the next level. This is what Jill accomplishes in this book. I have both of Jill's previous books "Beginners Guide to Aerial Silk" and "Intermediate Guide to Aerial Silk". This 3rd book is an amazing addition to round out my collection.

To market this book as a "coloring" book completely misses the mark as so many of its images are dark or solid black ink. How do you 'color' black pants? Since the fashions included in this book all appear true to the 70's style, Rather than calling this collection a "coloring book," perhaps it ought to be sold as a fun reference book for someone interested in leafing through it in search of a trip down memory lane.

The same problem with the 70's book. Too many black and grey tones. It is better as a reference book, than one to color in.

These prints took me way back!

If I could have seen more pages in this book I would never have bought it!!! I'm done buying from Amazon books I cannot see more of the inside! If you want history of designs in the 70's this might be for you! These pages are single sided so I gave i two stars! They are so shaded that it does not allow you to get creative!

Review

"Fitzgerald's is so decisively the best modern Aeneid that it is unthinkable that anyone will want to use any other version for a long time to come."--New York Review of Books"From the beginning to the end of this English poem...the reader will find the same sure control of English rhythms, the same deft phrasing, and an energy which urges the eye onward."--The New Republic"A rendering that is both marvelously readable and scrupulously faithful.... Fitzgerald has managed, by a sensitive use of faintly archaic vocabulary and a keen ear for sound and rhythm, to suggest the solemnity and the movement of Virgil's poetry as no previous translator has done (including Dryden).... This is a sustained achievement of beauty and power."--Boston Globe

To have the Classics so close at hand we moderns must thank AMAZON and others. This Edition of the Aeneid takes us back to the time of John Dryden, the great English writer. He gives us a very polished translation of the Latin. Impossible to give us all the beauties and subtleties of the Latin yet it is a wonderful introduction to Virgil. An impelling story about the "Pius Aeneus"- a basic story to out European Culture. The founding of Rome!! The Introduction to this Edition is a real gem. Read it- again and again if necessary. It is an education in itself. My first reading of the AENEID was many years ago but I still feel its influence. It is time for the modern world to again learn the wisdom, the ideals, the morals handed down from the Masters. A final appeal: for heavens sake don't pass through life without having read this Classic. It would be a disaster, Monet and Price no excuse- the KINDLE price is a give-away. Happy reading. Ignotus.

I happen to love both the Iliad and the Odyssey. The Aeneid tries to be both but ultimately fails. If you have read the Iliad then you know Troy falls. But you never see what happens to get that damned Argive horse into Troy do you? The Aeneid shows you. Book Two of the Aeneid is probably the highlight of the book. And you also see the fate of Aeneas, son of Venus and destined to star in Virgil's national epic about the founding of Rome.Essentially Juno holds a grudge. Paris didn't choose her so she hates Troy. Then Zeus has the audacity to replace her daughter Hebe with Ganymede as cupbearer to the Gods. And Zeus is probably having a relationship with Ganymede right underneath Juno's nose. Juno is not thrilled and so she turns what should be a nice straight forward voyage from Asia Minor to central Italy into an epic involving foreign queens (poor Dido) and lots of war. Seriously there is a lot of war in the last six books. The war action is probably why I gave this three stars instead of four. By trying to recapture the majesty of Iliad, Virgil fails. The last half of the Aeneid is a serious bore.As an aside, I didn't realize that Laocoön and his fate featured in the Aeneid. Who are they? You'll find out but also google Vatican City Laocoön sculpture. Some seriously beautiful art.Should you read this? Yes, I suppose so. Along with the Iliad and the Odyssey, the Aeneid is one of the foundational texts of Western Civilization for good reason. These are stories that are told and retold over the centuries and appear in lots of art as well. Plus, it's relatively short too. But by trying to fit in the future into a story about the past, Virgil loses his way. And so we are left with this - If Juno/Hera is one of the three Goddesses who offers you a gift, always choose her. Or else.

I had read some years ago Professor Fagles' translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey and loved them both. Fortunately, before his recent death, Fagles also translated Virgil's Aeneid. I wasn't very familiar with the Aeneid, but this translation brings it alive. I don't know enough Latin to be an independent judge of the translation, but experts attest that this is a great translation into modern English. For those not familiar with the poem, the Aeneid is the flip side of the Iliad and the Odyssey. It's the story of Aeneas, a Trojan and minor figure in the Iliad, who escapes Troy after the Greeks overrun it and has a series of travels and adventures, ending up in Italy and founding Rome. The Greeks, such as Odysseus, are among the villains. Beautiful language and a stirring story. Most recommended.

Many other reviewers have pointed out that this edition of The Aeneid has major formatting issues on the Kindle. I really wanted to read the Robert Fagles translation, as I had enjoyed his versions of The Iliad and The Odyssey. I decided that I could probably deal with some spacing issues if it meant I could read the Fagles translation.I was pleasantly surprised once I purchased the eBook. There are NO formatting issues of any kind on my Kindle Paperwhite. I'm not sure if this was because of an update to the document itself, or just because of the specific Kindle I was using.Fagles, again, does a great job making the epic poetry readable. But The Aeneid ultimately gets four stars because it's a somewhat contrived, convoluted story, especially in comparison to Homer's epics. It's definitely not bad, though. The Aeneid is a sequel to Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, written around 700 years after them. Written by Virgil, a Roman poet, The Aeneid is the missing link in our pop-culture portrayal and understanding of the Trojan War. This is the volume that describes the Trojan Horse episode, the fall of Troy, and the Trojan invasion of Italy. The epic follows Trojan warrior Aeneas as he journeys from Troy and invades Italy.By linking Rome with Troy, Virgil gave the Roman people a sense of entitlement in conquest and revenge against Carthage and Greece. But since Rome and Troy are not linked together in historical reality, Virgil manufactures a bunch of cop-out reasons for why the Italians maintained their own culture even after being conquered by the Trojans. This entire epic reminded me of an unnecessary Hollywood sequel, made purely as a cash-in. That being said, there are many really interesting and entertaining moments in this epic, and I enjoyed it overall.

Let Your Life Speak: Listening for the Voice of Vocation, by Parker J. Palmer

Amazon.com Review

The old Quaker adage, "Let your life speak," spoke to author Parker J. Palmer when he was in his early 30s. It summoned him to a higher purpose, so he decided that henceforth he would live a nobler life. "I lined up the most elevated ideals I could find and set out to achieve them," he writes. "The results were rarely admirable, often laughable, and sometimes grotesque.... I had simply found a 'noble' way of living a life that was not my own, a life spent imitating heroes instead of listening to my heart." Thirty years later, Palmer now understands that learning to let his life speak means "living the life that wants to live in me." It involves creating the kind of quiet, trusting conditions that allow a soul to speak its truth. It also means tuning out the noisy preconceived ideas about what a vocation should and shouldn't be so that we can better hear the call of our wild souls. There are no how-to formulas in this extremely unpretentious and well-written book, just fireside wisdom from an elder who is willing to share his mistakes and stories as he learned to live a life worth speaking about. --Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly

A gifted academic who formerly combined a college teaching career with community organizing, Palmer took a year's sabbatical to live at the "intentional" Quaker community of Pendle Hill in Pennsylvania. Instead of leaving at year's end, he became the community's dean of studies and remained there for 10 years. Palmer (The Courage to Teach) shares the lessons of his vocational and spiritual journey, discussing his own burnout and intense depression with exceptional candor and clarity. In essays that previously appeared in spiritual or educational journals and have been reworked to fit into this slim volume, he suggests that individuals are most authentic when they follow their natural talents and limitations, as his own story demonstrates. Since hearing one's "calling" requires introspection and self-knowledge (as suggested by the eponymous Quaker expression), Palmer encourages inner work such as journal-writing, meditation and prayer. Recognizing that his philosophy is at odds with popular, essentially American attitudes about self-actualization and following one's dreams, Palmer calls vocation "a gift, not a goal." He deftly illustrates his point with examples from the lives of people he admires, such as Rosa Parks, Annie Dillard and Vaclav Havel. A quiet but memorable addition to the inspirational field, this book has the quality of a finely worked homily. The writing displays a gentle wisdom and economy of style that leaves the reader curious for more insight into the author's Quaker philosophy. (Oct.) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Parker Palmer’s graceful little book LET YOUR LIFE SPEAK is the best work I’ve ever read on discernment and vocation. In six chapters and just under 120 elegantly written pages, Palmer presses home the point that vocation emerges from within us and that we must listen carefully to our own lives if we are to discover it. Taking on someone else’s concept of calling or subjecting ourselves to an external and alien set of values and objectives will do violence to ourselves and to our usefulness—Palmer would probably avoid the word—to our community and our world. Throughout, the author’s rooting in Quaker patterns and rhythms is evident, but this book is anything but sectarian and will be welcomed—indeed, has been welcomed, for it was published in the year 2000—by readers of many faiths and perhaps of none.Chapter I, ‘Listening to Life’, argues that one’s life is worthy of study and profoundly worth listening to. ‘The soul is like a wild animal—tough, resilient, savvy, self-sufficient, and yet exceedingly shy. If we want to see a wild animal, the last thing we should do is go crashing through the woods, shouting for the creature to come out. But if we are willing to walk quietly into the woods and sit silently for an hour or two at the base of a tree, the creature we are waiting for may well emerge, and out of the corner of an eye we will catch a glimpse of the precious wildness we seek.’In his second chapter (‘Now I Become Myself’), Palmer initiates in earnest the autobiographical transparency that he will sustain through the book, lending to his lines an authenticity that is arguably their most compelling feature. After having tried and failed over several episodes to forge a sense of vocational and personal identity, Parker writes that ‘(t)today I understand vocation quite differently—not as a goal to be achieved but as a gift to be received. Discovering vocation does not mean scrambling toward some prize just beyond my reach but accepting the treasure of true self I already possess. Vocation does not come from a voice “out there” calling me to become something I am not. It comes from a voice “in here” calling me to be the person I was born to be, to fulfill the original selfhood given me at birth by God.’The author urge us not to ‘wear other people’s faces’ and to realize that ‘(t)he deepest vocational question is not “What ought I to do with my life?” It is the more elemental and demanding “Who am I? What is my nature?”.’Yet Palmer does not imagine that this discovery of one’s true self occurs often without pain. ‘Most of us’, he avers, ‘arrive at a sense of self and vocation only after a long journey through alien lands … before we come to that center, full of light, we must travel in the dark. Darkness is not the whole of the story—every pilgrimage has passages of loveliness and joy—but it is the part of the story most often left untold.’ This ultimate qualifier is another item that, to this reader’s ears, lends the ring of truth to Palmer’s adventure. I say this because my own journeying after true vocation has, like Palmer’s, led me through both sunlight and darkness, yet I cannot say that any of the miles traveled has been entirely dark, entirely bleak, and certainly not entirely regrettable. Unlike many more mechanical treatments of the topic, Palmer’s notion of vocational discovery leads him to value the path rather than merely the destination. One finds, in this second and longest of Palmer’s chapters, refreshingly important roles to be played by fear, failure, and ordinariness. In my view, this makes LET YOUR LIFE SPEAK accessible to those of us who resonate with Palmer’s journey but could never write so elegantly of our own.Chapter III is titled ‘When Way Closes’. The missing article is not a typo, but rather a nod to the Quaker sense of ‘Way’. In the discourse of the Friends, we learn, ‘way opens’ and ‘way closes’. Palmer traces a givenness to vocation, a created anchoring in our persons that does not make all things possible. Instead, the way each of us is both opens doors and closes doors. Sometimes the closing brings embarrassment and shame.‘It would be nice if our limits did not reveal themselves in such embarrassing ways as getting fired from a job. But if you are like me and don’t readily admit your limits, embarrassment may be the only way to get your attention. I go on full alert only when I am blocked or get derailed or flat-out fail. Then, finally, I may be forced to face my nature and find out whether I can make something of both my gifts and my limitations.’Palmer develops the role played by our limitations by counterposing the ‘oughts’ that we often heed in our vocational adventure to the ‘ecology of life’ in which we find a proper place to stand and to be. In this third chapter, this Christian reader finds the theological undergirding to Palmer’s prose that the author often touches upon only lightly. It is, for Palmer, the ‘God of reality’ who ‘dwells quietly in the root system of the very nature of things’. He speaks easily of ‘one’s created nature’. When one finally comes to rest within this ecology burnout is not the inevitable outcome of passionate labor. Rather, ‘(w)hen the gift I give to the other is integral to my own nature, when it comes from a place of organic reality within me, it will renew itself—and me—even as I give it away.’‘All the Way Down’ (Chapter IV) suggests that an excruciating read lies just ahead and the title does not deceive, for in this fourth chapter Palmer sketches out for us his two debilitating experiences of depression. Neither reducing nor simplifying the causes of depression—in fact he calls the thing a ‘mystery’—Palmer managed in his own suffering to find his way to viewing depression as his friend. It took him all the way down to where it was safe to stand. Following upon his previous description of ‘the God of reality’, Parker borrows Tillich’s description of God as the ground of being: ’I had always imagined God to be in the same general direction was everything else I valued: up … I had to be forced underground before I could understand that the way to God is not up but down.’Thankfully, Palmer does not write prescriptively about the ways (plural) into depression nor the ways (again, note the plural) out. His own recovery remains something of a mystery, captured in the magnificent poem with which he graces the conclusion of Chapter IV. Yet for him, his submission to the vocational ‘oughts’ by which he permitted himself for years to be hounded prepared the way down in the darkness. There he found not only God, but himself as well.Chapter V (‘Leading from Within’) now turns outward to the damage and the health that a leader can bring to the wider community and, indeed, to the world. We project both shadows and light onto the world. ‘A good leader is intensely aware of the interplay of inner shadow and light, lest the act of leadership do more harm than good.’In this chapter, any hint that vocation is essentially a narcissistic pursuit evaporates. For Palmer, vocation begins within but eventually projects itself onto one’s world. He writes insightfully of the ways leaders fashion a community from misguided starting points and, happily, also via the freedom that comes from authentic vocation. Let me single out at some length a few of Parker’s words on fear as motivator:‘As one who is no stranger to fear, I have had to read those words with care so as not to twist them into a discouraging counsel of perfection. “Be not afraid” does not mean we cannot have fear. Everyone has fear, and people who embrace the call to leadership often find fear abounding. Instead, the words say we do not need to be the fear we have. We do not have to lead from a place of fear, thereby engendering a world in which fear is multiplied. We have places of fear inside of us, but we have other places as well—places with names like trust and hope and faith. We can choose to lead from one of those places, to stand on ground that is not riddled with the fault lines of fear, to move toward others from a place of promise instead of anxiety. As we stand in one of those places, fear may remain close at hand and our spirits may still tremble. But now we stand on ground that will support us, ground from which we may lead others towards a more trustworthy, more hopeful, more faithful way of being in the world.’This reviewer—like Palmer, no stranger to fear—thrills to such a sound and realistic assessment of the kind of ‘fearlessness’ that embraces reality and yet dares to lead, unparalyzed. In his concluding chapter (VI, ‘There is a Season’), Palmer departs from his now familiar approach to speak of how ‘the quest for selfhood and vocation’ follow the recurring patterns and rhythms of the four seasons. This chapter alone would justify keeping Let Your Life Speak within arm’s reach, to be read and re-read at the calendar’s and the seasons’ turnings. One can hardly read Palmer’s exceedingly transparent work on vocation and then write for others about it without a bit of transparency of his own. After twelve years of leadership in a relatively prominent position—at least for the proportions of this review’s little world—I recently hit the wall at the end of a particularly grueling vocational mile. This is not without its emotional violence, its sense of failure and disillusionment, its return to the root considerations of vocational identity, and its forceful requirement to look again and to look within for wisdom about next steps. For me, each page of Palmer’s LET YOUR LIFE SPEAK brought both balm and direction. Many brought exhilaration as well.I offer this review in hopes that Palmer will be a bit more widely read for those, like me, who find a wise mentor the doctor’s very order.

Where do you start with this book? It was one of the most fantastic reads for me. I picked this book up thinking I was going to have some guidance about what I’m supposed to be “doing” in my life. Instead, I got an awakening about exploring the beauties of life within myself and the world around me and beyond. This book touched my soul and opened my thought process up in ways I didn’t realize existed. This book is so profound that you won’t know what I’m talking about until you read it yourself. And it was so beautifully written. It’s a mere 109 pages but I found myself rereading much of it to really grasp and love the concepts.Though this book is Christian based, it’s very universal in its language and idea so anyone from any faith can pick this up and be blown away.

I had never before come across this author, but got the book when another writer quoted from it. I found it helpful, easy to read, and it had some seminal things to say about letting go of the external pressures to be and do things a certain way. Allowing oneself to be what we were born to be, irrespective of where we stand in the pecking order was very refreshing. The "you can be anything you want to be" message has limitations since there is only just so much room for prize-winning anythings, and a depressed economy makes getting to the top even more difficult, so a sense of failure is the inevitable outcome if that is the way we want to live our lives. Being exactly who you are and getting in touch with yourself at this deepest level leaves you with a certain amount of relief when he assures us that fulfilling our lives by allowing ourselves to be who we actually are leads to the greater sense of satisfaction and fulfilment. If I have any criticism of this book it would be that it was a little too self-absorbed, but then, I have to admit that he used his own experiences to help us with ours, and it was skilfully done. The religious references were restrained, so anyone of any faith or of no faith could relate to what he is trying to say. Bottom line - Parker J Palmer deserves his status as one of the better writers of this genre. I am not sorry I got this book.

This book contains some great advice ... even wisdom ... but I felt the author's writing style was a tad foggy.I teach a class on how to create your life's timeline. Some people call the timeline the DASH. The dash on your grave marker between your birth and death date. I recommend to my students to include the good, bad and ugly on the timeline to help your family and friends not only learn about you but also learn some valued life lessons. To emphasize the importance of including mistakes on your timeline, I plan to reference the author's statement: “Many young people today journey in the dark, as the young always have, and we elders do them a disservice when we withhold the shadowy parts of our lives. When I was young, there were very few elders willing to talk about the darkness; most of them pretended that success was all they had ever known. As the darkness began to descend on me in my early twenties, I thought I had developed a unique and terminal case of failure. I did not realize that I had merely embarked on a journey toward joining the human race.”

This is a fantastic book that helped me to make some important decisions regarding the direction of my career when I was at a crossroads in my life. The premise upon which this book is basically based on the old adage, "To Thy Own Self Be True," but this book goes very much beyond this - it actually unpacks this adage and applies it concretely to one's career choices and other things. It also seems to hold up a mirror to the things that we tell ourselves that prevent us from leading a more vocationally liberated life. Truly, I have been a world-weary reader of inspirational books, but this is one new read that I absolutely loved! Thank you Parker Palmer for writing this illuminating book!
