I had an opportunity to travel to Australia a few years ago, and loved so much the charming and unique "Aussisms" I heard.while there. When it was a good friend's turn to visit, I bought this book for her. She told me how much she loved it, and how many of the expressions she used while she was there - to the delight of her new Aussie friends.Even if you're not going Down Under. It's a fun to learn the adorable and quirky expressions.

Funny and great slang from social life, food, entertainment, sports and fun to share with others, Aussies enjoy reading it too. It's fantastic for conversation openers with other Australians. It's enjoyable reading through the different slang categories with the hand-drawn illustrations throughout.

I’m an Aussie. Of course I going to give it 5 stars. Great gift for any non Aussie mates you have. Particularly the ones that have no idea what we saying most of the time.

Gave it as a wedding gift for a couple going to Australia for their honeymoon. Australian humor and expressions are very different. Fortunately, I've had a few coaching students from Down Under that explain phrases to me--this book really helps a lot. Get it!

Got this as a gift for a friend that is moving to Australia for school! Though it was pretty small, it is perfect for a quick read on the plane or to carry around in your purse as she explores the streets of her new home.

I appreciate Virgie's ability to remind me of things I thought I knew but somehow forgot. I needed this book right now. Even though there is a lot in her experience I haven't endured (e.g., blatant harassment at school, years of dieting/starvation), there is so much in her writing that I do connect with. This book made me feel deeply understood and validated as fat woman, and I cheered at this line from Virgie, as I thought about the life I want to build: "In the dreams I have of my future, I am fat."

READ THIS BOOK! If you are looking for a quick but crucial read on the intersection of dieting, fatness, and social justice, do not skip this book! Virgie weaves her own experiences with years of research to drive home necessary lessons on the oppressive nature of the diet industry, the effects of misogyny on dieting and body image, and (among others) the importance of living your life just as you are NOW, not waiting around until some magical day when suddenly all of your problems are solved by shrinking yourself (hint: your problems will NEVER be solved by shrinking yourself, which isn't even sustainably possible!) Virgie takes us all to school with this intelligent, often funny, and sometimes heartbreaking book. Do yourself a favor and read it!

This book is everything ! “I think about the thousand ways that women in my family were silently (and sometimes outright) expected to give up their lives, their dreams, and their desire, do that they could become the glorified babysitters for the men in their lives who wanted a legacy but none of the the responsibility of child -rearing. I think of the ways that women are expected to become mothers, giving up theirs lives while still being the object of scorn and pity, while men are praised for having dad bods.” It combats fatphobia among other social issues like patriarchy and racism. Definitely one of my new fave feminist!

This book was fun to read and had so much insight. I found it incredibly empowering!

I loved this book. It’s a quick read, full of deep insights. The writing style is approachable so I feel fine about recommending it to non-academic friends. Virgie succinctly draws connections between misogyny/white supremacy and diet culture/fatphobia, and then states them as the well-researched facts that they are, not as points that are up for debate.A really important read for all people: for fatties like me to feel seen and equipped to advocate for ourselves in a hateful world, and also for thin folx, who are often completely unaware of their own fatphobia and the systemic oppression it perpetuates.Super happy with this purchase and will probably buy more to pass out to friends.

Virgie pulled no punches and gave so many of us the real talk and unapologetic focus on the root causes of fatphobia and our deep entrenchment in diet culture...and gave us a glimpse on how break free. Tl;dr: A great read for older elementary and up. Factual and fun. Read it.Nathan Hale’s 6th book, and it doesn’t disappoint. Once again, he takes a familiar backdrop and fills it with little-known (to most) and interesting details which are equal parts entertainment and education.The historical Nathan Hale is back with his executioner and British officer to tell another tale. This time, Vicente Guerrero (and his band of executioners) join to help tell the story which, after all, mostly takes place in Mexico. This is a great touch and really helps propel the story while providing even more entertainment.This book includes a relatively thorough (but not tedious) history of Texas before its statehood in 1845. I enjoyed feeling the sense of chaos inflicted by the politics of time. The story follows the “Alamo All-Stars” to tell the story: William Travis, Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, and (not familiar to me) Juan Seguin. Actually, a lot of time is spent on Bowie and his many exploits which led to him being in the thick of Texas’s violent birth.My largest gripe is with Santa Anna, who left no defenders of the Alamo alive. Thus, no reliable accounts of the defenders immediately before or during the battle. However, Nathan Hale did his best with what he had.Also, once again, the maps and diagrams included inside the front and back covers are helpful to place the wide range of featured locations.Full disclosure: I’m a history teacher, and I am painfully aware of how little most Americans know about their neighbors. Hopefully, this book will help fill in the blanks many have about our southern neighbor.

As a teacher, I am very happy to have these books in my classroom and school library. They are fun, informative and fascinating for young readers. Nathan Hale serves up history just the way kids like it, with humor, facts and interesting sidebars that all make the kids want to read more, more, more! Once they start reading a Hazardous Tales story, they always want to read the whole series.I got my copy of the Alamo All*Stars from Amazon yesterday and brought it to school today. Three kids have read it by lunch and I have a waiting list of ten right now -- and that's just my 5th grade homeroom.All that said, Alamo All*Stars is a great tale, especially for Texas students. The maps are very helpful, the drawings of the Alamo spot-on accurate, and the back story and end result of the Texas Revolution are all included, giving great context. Hale gets the tone just right, without vilifying one side or creating hagiographies of the other. You just can't ask for more.

My 8yo son has read each of the NHHT books multiple times. He keeps one with him wherever he goes. They can have themes that may be shocking for some, but those opened good discussions for our family. For example, _The Underground Abductor_ exposes some atrocities of slavery that I wasn't aware of. Our kid asked questions, and we talked them out.If you have a kid who loves learning and humor and you can handle having discussions about hard stuff occasionally, then I highly recommend these books.We have loaned a couple to friends who don't love reading for pleasure, and they also LOVED these books.

This book is probably more suited for 8-12 y/o than my children but even my 3,4 and 6 year old love hearing the stories. I think the interesting comic book format with the good illustration keeps their attention. As a parent I find this very refreshing to be able to teach my kids some history they probably aren't going to be taught in school, I know I was taught much about the Alamo.Do yourself a favor and buy all of the Nathan Hales books.

I hated history and never understood it in class growing up. Now I find it interesting and can understand it, mostly thanks to these books. My 7 year old has ADHD and struggles with reading. He loves history and loves looking at and trying to read these books. He has learned so much about history. These books are beautifully and sturdily designed. My son wants to collect them all and I am happy to help him achieve this goal.

This should be required reading for kids learning Texas history (and really anyone visiting the Alamo). It is fun, engaging, easy to read, and makes the history come alive. His illustrations are so fun to look at. I love Nathan Hale's books and I can't wait to read more. If he ever runs out of ideas, I think he should go back to ancient history. I would love to see him tackle Attila the Hun or Genghis Khan or Alexander the Great!

We discovered these books when my son was 7. Nathan Hale's books have been a spring board into his interest in history. These are engaging, funny, and informative. I can't thank the author enough. We have all of his books and my son reads them repeatedly.

All of the Hazardous Tales books have been wonderful. I teach struggling readers in junior high and they all love these books. Over the school year, most of my students will read the whole series. They are also perfect for ELLs who are gaining background knowledge. This book was no exception. My students were excited to learn about something they had never heard of. I always have a checkout list for these books.
