About the Author

Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. I'm very happy with the book as it helps count and recognize numbers however the last page in my book is missing the number 68. Makes it hard for a child to learn the numbers when there is one missing in the sequence.

This book was not what I thought but well wroth it.When my little one was learning to count to 100, I thought this book would be ideal. She is a huge fan of Curious George to teaching her to count with her buddy was what I wanted. When we got the book she was so excited I started to read. She counted the 1 bed and the pillows. The further along we got, the more confused she was. For example the 16 rubber ducks were easy to count but the 23 napkins were hard to see. Then again it got easy with the 26 pancakes.Instead of confusing my little one, I took a whole new approach with this book. I started to read this book to her like a typical picture book, As we get to each number, I have her read the numbers and I read the text. I use this as a form of number recognition.If you are looking for a way to help your little one learn to count independently I would not recommend this book. On the same note, this is a fun book that will help your little one recognize numbers.

I finally found a book that counts out each diget from 1 to 100. Not only is each diget counted out, but each diget has a corresponding group of items that equal that diget...like 12 neckties. I love how it goes through George's day. And there is a story line, too. It's the city's centennial anniversary. George is headed to the centennial fair. He decides that it is a good day to learn to count to 100. First he counts in the house, then outside, then in school while he is visiting Betsy. Lastly, he counts items at the centennial fair.It's easy to go through and just read it or to stop and count all the shoes or all the ducks. I notice that my children (2 and 4) seem to find a new item they are interested in every time we read it. They don't need to stop and count everything, but I find it excellent counting practice because inevitably there a few things each time they want to count plus, every time we read it, they are counting to 100 already anyway! Highly recommended!

Love this book! Its super cute and educational. There is so much that you can do with this book. When the kids get tired of counting, we use it as a look and find book. One page has a map of the United States. I use that map to teach the kids about the states. Its a really nice book for fans of Curious George and for teaching. I hope this helps!

Excellent book! If you don't mind snuggling in for a 20 minute read you are good to go. They count objects for every single number from 1 to 100. If you have a child who needs to count everything on the page every time you read you MAY want to hide this book. 😁 It's likely too much for the under 4 crowd ... my 6 and 4 year old will sit through it.

My daughter likes this book a lot. It is long, but it identifies all of the numbers. I don't start counting over each time we get to a new number, I simply read off the number and continue reading. So much better than other counting books I've bought that don't identify all the number to 100.

My 3 year old LOVES the curious george books. He is really able to follow the stories and loves playing pretend acting out the books after he reads them.Just know that this book is very long especially if you are going to be counting for each number.

Best counting book ever! For whatever reason, this is the only counting book that holds the attention of my four-year-old. She actually asks to read it and we are working on learning numbers up to 100. Highly recommend!

Once again, Binchy (The Glass Lake, 1995, etc.) memorably limns the lives of ordinary people caught in the traps sprung by life and loving hearts. When Danny Lynch and his young bride-to-be Ria Norris buy No. 16, a large, derelict Victorian house, Tara Road is a rundown Dublin street. Lovingly restored, the house soon becomes a gathering place as neighbors stop by to chat, help out, or eat one of Ria's delicious meals. Ria has loved handsome Danny, a realtor who works for high-flying property tycoon Barney McCarthy, since first meeting him. She enjoys managing her busy domestic life and two children, Annie and Brian; her friends, like Gertie, whose husband beats her; Colm, who's opened a restaurant nearby and worries about his drug-addicted sister; and Rosemary, a beautiful, unmarried businesswoman who owns one of No. 32's new apartments. But the summer when Annie is fourteen and Brian nine, Ria learns that Danny has been dallying with a ``fancy woman,'' now pregnant with his child, and that he wants to marry her. Stunned, Ria impulsively accepts an American womans surprise telephone request to trade houses for the summer. I've only skimmed the reviews, but I saw references to what a....well, weak-willed un-liberated woman the main character is, and I suppose to some extent that's true, but I'm not sure that's the point: I think Binchy was writing to depict the Irish character in a time of unexpected prosperity and modernization of a country that took a long time to make the changes others did. Things like divorce, gay rights, adultery, money, politicis, fashion...it's all in there, and in that way reads like typical "chick lit," although the author can spin a long, involved story better than most, and is generally worth reading. My point here, however, is that this is a story of modern Ireland, in a prosperous time--which is now over, apparently--and one of increasing freedoms for its citizens, particularly women. But she makes it plain that there are still women like the ones I grew up with, the women who "stand by their man" no matter what. But she does have the art of depicting each one a little differently, and so they are interesting, each with different degrees of development. Some of the characters--the main character among them--are enough to make you want to scream, in the way they allow themselves to be treated, and others are quite inspirational. But all of them seem to be loyal helpmates, even the most independent of them, and one thing I notice about all Binchy's female characters is that they exhibit great self-control, excellent manners and supreme loyalty. Otherwise, she depicts the Irish love for community and the natural ability for friendship of the Irish, as compared to us more insular Americans: every event seems to be attended by "a cast of thousands," as she humorously terms it. We have a lot to learn from our neighbors about friendship.

Overall, I like this book by Maeve Binchy. It takes place in the 1980's-1990's in Dublin, Ireland and follows Ria Lynch through her 20's to late 30's. She marries, has kids, enjoys prosperity due to her handsome, successful husband, decorates her fantastic house (on Tara Road of course) and has many friends. Her mom stops by the house a lot. A guy plants a kitchen garden in her yard. Her chronically-abused friend comes and cleans her house for her husband's drinking money. Her other best friend also is successful (and beautiful) and buys a nice place next door to hers. Sometimes they eat at Quentins. Sometimes they eat at Colm's Restaurant. Ria also cooks a lot and lives a life of almost oblivious happiness.Until her daughter reaches the age of 14, then things take a downturn for Ria. The daughter suddenly turns into a terrible, irritating caricature of a spoiled teenage princess. Her son (age 9) is a comic-relief goofball who always says the wrong thing at the wrong time (kind of funny actually). Her handsome, successful husband stays handsome but less successful and turns out to be not so faithful. Anyways, a lady calls from America and they decide to swap houses for a summer. Ria and the lady both confront personal issues during their times in each others homes and grow emotionally. By the end, the good people are rewarded with success, and the bad people have suffered losses. All is well in Ireland.The plot is meandering and so is the story-telling, but it is an enjoyable Binchy novel. The beauty of her novels is that they go nowhere fast but are entertaining and a good distraction for the mind. She has a cozy, gossipy writing style that I enjoy. Many of the characters are not fully developed, and are defined by one dominating characteristic (abused Gertie, Ruthless Rosemary, slutty Kitty, etc). If you like Binchy, you will probably like this novel and it is worth reading.

Ria and Danny Lynch seem to have it all. A gorgeous home, a wealthy lifestyle, 2 beautiful children, and a loving relationship (or so Ria thinks). Their home is the gathering place for family and friends, and Ria always has something cooking to share with anyone who wants to eat. She realizes her life is no where near as perfect as she thinks, her husband is a philanderer, and her life is falling apart. One day, the phone rings, and a woman named Marilyn calls looking for Danny. She met Danny, a real estate agent, many years ago, and wishes to ask him if he knows of anyone who will house swap with her. She lives in a gorgeous home in Connecticut and needs to get away and get her mind clear again. In chatting with her, Ria says that the plan sounds good to her and they agree to swap homes for a while. In making a fresh start, no matter how brief, the women get a chance to find themselves and figure out what their futures will look like. Marilyn, who tends to keep to herself at home, gets to know all the neighbors and uncovers secrets about them that directly affect Ria. While at first, Marilyn harbors a dislike of Ria (and vise versa) they soon realize that the other woman has suffering and trials and feel love and compassion for each other. Ria, whose home is an open door to all, finds Marilyn keeps to herself and even those closest to her have never been in the house. She gets to know everyone in Marilyn's life and invites them over to swim, party, eat and enjoy themselves. I won't give away the ending, but they do end up meeting and it's very satisfying. This book is about discovery of themselves and new beginnings. I really enjoyed how the women became so protective and loving of each other, despite only speaking on the phone.

I found this book slow to rise and at times it was hard to keep the large cast of characters sorted out but once I became engrossed in the story I couldn't put it downA nice, fun read, though rather long. If you enjoy romance and intrigue, take a trip to Tara Road, you won't regret it.

While this is certainly a *ahem* memorable guide, and the author clearly put a lot of work into it, I was unable to use it for studying my MBLEX as the illustrations and Pneumonics are mostly very Disturbing, Racist, Sexist, or just plain CREEPY. One involves a man tying up another man, putting a diaper on him, and putting rocks in his diaper. Another shows an elderly gentleman ogling a "minor" girl as she adjusts her bikini top. Hitler makes an appearance in several, women being tied up seems to also be a theme. I purchased both his guides and ended up deleting them from my library as I was continually grossed out and confused by the weird, demented nature of the pictures and pneumonics.

I love the essays she writes about life, writing and her philosophical insights into what it is to be human.

We studied this book in our Sunday School class and it was very interesting. It collects a lot of Ms Le Guin's writing and is very thought provoking and engaging.

Dancing at the End of the World - Ursula K. Le Guin [2014-03-10 513] "Dancing at the End of the World" (1989) is a collection of essays, talks, reviews and some travel notes by the highly esteemed author Ursula K. Le Guin. For many years I have greatly admired her novels particularly "The Lathe of Heaven". I am cautiously optimistic that by reading non-fiction books by authors I hold in high esteem I may become more nuanced in my appreciation of their fiction. I sought out this book because I had reviewed the table of contents on the ISFDB (Internet Science Fiction Data Base) and I greatly desired to read a couple of items - a book review of a C.S. Lewis collection and an essay titled "Where Do you Get Your Ideas From". Both readings were informative but the essay was of particularly interest. To summarize ideas flow up from the subconscious and are an amalgamation of life experiences. I surveyed the book from cover to cover sampling a page or two from each entry. To be honest, with one exception, and the two pieces noted I passed on the other writings. The unexpected gem of this book for this reader was a diary like essay about Ms. LeGuin's experiences during filming of her novel "The Lathe of Heaven" - note the 1980 version! Very interesting and informative indeed to this reader since I was not previously aware it had be make into a movie and as it turns out twice - but that's another story altogether.

Written as if on a vacation in the form of bad female poetry. Not worth it.

I had never read a word of Ursula K. Le Guin until I recently picked up "Dancing at the Edge of the World," a chronologically arranged collection of essays, talks and book reviews written by Le Guin during the period 1976 through 1988. It is a collection that is intended, in the author's words, "[to] provide a sort of mental biography, a record of responses to ethical and political climates, of the transforming effect of certain literary ideas, and of the changes of a mind."Each of the essays listed in the table of contents is denoted with a glyph that categorizes the essay as dealing with feminism, social responsibility, literature, or travel. This categorization gives the reader a good idea of the range of the collection and of Le Guin's interests, which extend far beyond the science fiction genre for which she is most well known.The quality of the essays is uneven. Some of the travel pieces are soporific ("Places Names," "Along the Platte" and "Over the Hills and a Great Way Off"), although they might be more interesting to readers who have been to the places Le Guin describes. Other pieces seem to suffer from the loss caused by transforming what were originally spoken presentations into writing. The feminist writings in some cases are the victim of changing times. What is useful, however, even in these weaker pieces, are Le Guin's introductions, which provide a useful contextual background that helps the reader understand the import of the essay.While some of the essays are unremarkable, there also are several exceptional writings that are worth the price of admission. I refer, in particular, to the 1988 essay, "The Fisherman's Daughter," which provides a provocative and interesting discussion of women and writing, a text that follows in the line from Virginia Woolf's "A Room of One's Own" through Tillie Olsen's "Silences," drawing heavily on both authors for another view of this much discussed literary/feminist theme. I also refer to the essays from 1986, a very good year for Le Guin insofar as the six essays included here from that year all provide interesting and worthwhile glimpses at why her writing is so well regarded. In particular, I enjoyed "Bryn Mawr Commencement Address" and "Text, Silence, Performance," two essays that illuminate the ways in which spoken and written language, and the privileging of certain communicative forms over others, affects the world.Despite the shortcomings of some of its essays, "Dancing at the Edge of the World" provides a fascinating picture of Le Guin's worldview, successfully painting the "mental biography" of one of America's more interesting and accomplished writers during one decade of her life.

Around pp. 165-167, in the essay "The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction," LeGuin discusses the possibility that the first human invention was not the weapon, but the container -- the sling, the sack, the bag, the carrier. (I remembered it as "the vessel," but that term doesn't appear in the book.) What good is generating a lot of stuff to eat if you don't have any way to get it back to camp? She argues the point persuasively and passionately.I read this book in 1991 or 1992, nearly 20 years ago. I've not seen the idea anywhere else (although she cites an anthropologist writing in 1975) but it has shaped my perception since. Not to diminish the rest of the book, but this single idea in this one essay is, I believe, worth getting the whole book for.

This was an author I had never heard of before, but I grabbed it among the other 25 from the high school library where I used to teach. I found the book to be a very mixed bag of some interesting pieces--the names piece in traveling across Us, some of the poetry, the Mills college graduation speech among them. But too many of them i just really couldn't get into. In checking some info on the author, i see she has done some great things which I agree with in many fields and she lives in my favorite US town (our daughter also lives in Portland). But I still cannot rank this book higher than a 3 (personally)

This author embraces all of her sister's qualities as experience arising in excellance. She is a wonderful writer clear and simple.
