Who Is the Dalai Lama?   February 22, 1940, was a busy day at the Potala, a grand, thousand-room palace high in the mountains of Tibet. Early in the morning, guests started to fill the main assembly hall. They were waiting for their leader to arrive.   Once the hall was full, the crowd grew quiet. A little boy, dressed in golden robes, entered. Horn and trumpet blasts greeted him. He crossed the room on a white carpet that had been rolled out especially for him to a jeweled throne. It was called the Lion Throne because of the eight lions carved into the wooden base of the tall, cushioned chair. The throne was the seat of the Dalai Lama (say: DAHL-eye LAH-muh), a name given to the political and religious leader of the country of Tibet.   The young Dalai Lama needed some help climbing up the steps to his throne. He sat cross-legged on the seat and watched the ceremonies, dances, and readings. Many gifts were set out for the boy—a music box, the tusk of an elephant, expensive fabrics, parakeets, a tricycle, and even a brick of gold! Holy men, government officials, and the others in attendance, in a sign of respect, bowed so low before him that they were lying on the floor. “I found that funny,” he later said. The Dalai Lama is known for his sense of humor. But it was especially funny to him that the adults were acting this way. After all, he was only four years old!   As he grew, that young boy on the Lion Throne began to understand why that day was so special. As Tibet’s Fourteenth Dalai Lama, he would face joyful times and difficult times. He would grow in wisdom. And he would become caring and strong.   But on his enthronement day, he had no idea what lay ahead for himself and for the people of Tibet. Along with the many gifts the little boy received, he also held an adventurous future in his hands.     Chapter 1: Little Lhamo     Diki Tsering woke very early on July 6, 1935. She went out behind her mud-and-stone house in Taktser, Tibet, to the barn. There, among the animals, she gave birth to her son Lhamo (say: LAM-oh). He didn’t cry. His eyes were open wide. Lhamo’s mother, Diki, and father, Choekyong Tsering, already had four children—their daughter, Dolma, and three sons named Norbu, Gyalo, and Lobsang. There wasn’t much furniture in their six-room house. The children didn’t have their own beds. The family mostly gathered in the kitchen, especially during cold Tibetan winters, to keep warm by the fire. They practiced Tibetan Buddhism, a religion that was very important to them and to all Tibetans. So their house also had a prayer room, where the family left offerings of food and flowers at a small altar.   Taktser, a small village in the northeastern province of Amdo, was on a hill with a view of a wide valley. The land and the weather weren’t good for farming, but families, including Lhamo’s, still tried their best to grow crops.   His family grew barley, buckwheat, and potatoes. Before Lhamo was born, the village suffered from a long drought. No rain had fallen in years, and hail had destroyed the plants in the fields. Many villagers were starving.   Once Lhamo could walk, he followed his mother around the farm as she did her chores. He held the bowl as she milked the dzomos (say: ZHO-mohs)—animals that are a cross between yaks and cows. Little Lhamo was playful. When his mother carried him on her shoulders, he pulled at her ears to show her which way to go. When she sent him to gather eggs from the chickens, she discovered him clucking and sitting with the hens in their nests.   The Tsering family farm also had yaks, sheep, goats, and horses. Lhamo’s father especially loved the horses. But he was often angry and harsh with his children. Lhamo’s mother, on the other hand, was gentle and kind. Lhamo later said, “My first teacher of compassion was my mother.” Compassion means wanting to help someone who is suffering, hurt, or in trouble. Lhamo saw compassion in the way his mother treated him and the way she shared what she could with the needy people in their village.   One of Lhamo’s favorite games was to pack up his clothes and pretend to go on trips. He straddled the windowsill, pretending to ride a horse. His mother asked him where he was going. He said he was headed to Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet.   Lhamo didn’t know that more than a thousand miles away, in Lhasa, something important was happening. In December 1933, the Thirteenth Dalai Lama had died. So Tibet had been without a leader for two years. Government officials and religious leaders had started the search to find the next Dalai Lama.

Bourbon Empire: The Past and Future of America’s Whiskey, by Reid Mitenbuler

Review

"Reid Mitenbuler pulls aside the curtain of puffery to show us the spirit’s history, as well as how the stuff is actually made, who controls the industry and where it might be headed.... [Shows] the business of liquor to be every bit as fascinating as the fictions in which the distillers love to swaddle themselves."—Wayne Curtis, Wall Street Journal"An engaging and thorough exploration of the history of America's national booze."—Playboy"Bourbon Empire digs deep to divulge the truth about the people donning bourbon labels—James C. Crow, Elijah Craig and Evan Williams, to name a few—and unravels the often-questionable practices of bourbon business. It’s in these moments of historical shenanigans that we find Mitenbuler’s true talent. He doesn’t slam bourbon brands for misleading consumers with marketing. Mitenbuler simply writes the truth."—Fred Minnick, Parade“An illuminating, well-paced narrative that will interest students and imbibers of the wee drap, American-style.”—Kirkus   “Mitenbuler’s prose is relaxed and mellow with a shot of wry; his entertaining, loose-limbed narrative revels in the colorful characters and droll hypocrisies of capitalism at its booziest.”—Publishers Weekly "Abundant and even surprising detail is bundled with sharp writing that doesn’t hesitate to criticize.... This terrific account of the rich heritage behind a classic American beverage is recommended for those who enjoy reading histories of foodstuffs of all sorts."—Library Journal “Bourbon Empire is a lively, rowdy tale of swindlers and smugglers, connoisseurs and craftsmen. Reid Mitenbuler is a talented storyteller whose wide-ranging curiosity takes us to Civil War battlefields and prison cells as well as cornfields and world-famous distilleries. Truly fascinating, and a must-read for whiskey lovers!”—Amy Stewart, author of The Drunken Botanist   “Bourbon Empire is more than just whiskey history. Mitenbuler demonstrates, with clear, witty and incisive prose, how the drink shaped, and was shaped by, the history of American capitalist society. It is a book that whiskey fans, historians and students of American business will enjoy, and learn much from.”—Clay Risen, staff editor, The New York Times and author of American Whiskey, Bourbon, and Rye   “A must have for every bourbon enthusiast from beginner to expert. A book that finally tells the true story of our beloved bourbon, putting in perspective its important role in American history. Bourbon Empire has it all, demystifying the good, the bad and the ugly.”—Sean Brock, Chef/Partner of McCrady’s and Husk   “In finding the facts behind some of bourbon’s most cherished fables, Mitenbuler has unearthed true tales that are even better than the tall tales. A fresh look at stories we thought we knew.”—Lew Bryson, managing editor, Whisky Advocate and author of Tasting Whiskey   “Reid manages to juggle his skepticism and enthusiasm in this carefully researched and lovingly written history of America's spirit. He peels back layer after layer of filigree, searching for the real story, which is as much the story of American business, politics, advertising, and immigration as it is the story of bourbon.”—Max Watman, author of Harvest and Chasing the White Dog

There's an amazing amount of interesting and contextualized history in this book as one is likely to find anywhere. This isn't just about whiskey; it's about the place whiskey, and bourbon in particular, holds in American history and the surprising leverage the industry had (and has) on the development and direction of the nation. Mitenbuler has an approachable style and is extremely knowledgeable on the subject without being high handed. If you like your history intertwined with interesting local facts and figures, strategic events, and general trivia woven together with a sly humor and insight, you'll enjoy this book.

I’m not a bourbon drinker, myself. Bourbon was my late grandfather’s drink, the one who fought WWII in the U.S. Army Air Corps and then raised three children in a wholesome Midwestern town. I’m about as likely to order a Jim Beam on the rocks as I am to fly missions over the Ruhr Valley, or eat TV dinners while watching reruns of M*A*S*H. Which is to say, not very likely. So it was a pleasant surprise to enjoy this book so much. That’s because Bourbon Empire is not just a history of bourbon, it’s a history of America. With a keen eye for a good story, and prose so good you’ll find yourself reading it twice, Reid Mitenbuler goes beyond the rough and ready frontier folk whose names have been pasted on the bottles apocryphally to tell his readers the truth about America’s founding drunkards, plucky immigrants, ruthless capitalists, earnest reformers, Prohibition-era bootleggers, Madison Avenue bamboozlers, and modern-day chemists in lab coats.Unabashed five stars. All my friends are getting Bourbon Empire for Father’s Day. I only wish Grandpa could have read this book.

First, you definitely need a glass of bourbon in hand while you read this review, let alone the book.Spectacular history of bourbon in the US. Mr Mitenbuler not only analyzes most brands and their lineage, but also focuses on the movers and shakers that made American bourbon what it is today, for better or worse. For example, I didn't even know that Old Crow used to be a high end bourbon in the mid-1900s. It's simply amazing to read how many bourbons rose to prominence then just as suddenly fell out of favor, and which ones rose from the ashes in present day. As bourbon has now seen a resurgence in popularity, I'd highly recommend picking up, if not at least to have some cool facts to bring with you next time you go to the bar. Just don't be that guy who goes overboard and will only drink Pappy Van Winkle.

Mr. Mitenbuler's book deserves a space on the shelves of history lovers as well as bourbon lovers. It does not just repeat the popular history of American whiskey; rather it adds detail, context, and perspective to an important contributor in the development of the American economy. His Acknowledgements section, Bibliography, and parts of several chapters give credit to other authors well-known to the community of American whiskey enthusiasts because they rely on historical research rather than folklore (and advertising copy) to tell the story of Bourbon. I liked Mr. Mitenbuler's somewhat novel approach - he tells the story of bourbon by telling the story of the economic development of the U.S. with a focus on how bourbon, and other American whiskeys, contributed to that growth rather than focusing just on the growth of bourbon. It certainly deserves to be included with the half-dozen or so definitive works on bourbon which is why I bought the hard copy AND the Kindle version. It looks really nice with those other six or so books, each of which is special in its own way. And each of which has been read more than once. Way more.

Bourbon Empire will clearly be lauded by bourbon experts, but for the rest of us, I think the book offers something deeper - a perspective on American history that might have otherwise gone unnoticed. Bourbon Empire is thought-provoking, well-researched, and unexpectedly, downright hilarious at times. The book reminds us that reality is often far more interesting than fiction, and it adeptly carries the reader on a journey from the backwoods of American history right up to the shelf at your present-day local liquor store. While the entire book was excellent, I particularly enjoyed the attention given to bourbon's place in colonial history through the civil war - where information is not quite so easy to find or piece together in an engaging fashion such as the author has done here. Overall, Bourbon Empire is a must-read because of the sheer knowledge it conveys as well as its value as a unique and entertaining angle on American history and culture.

The author steadily declines. The books starts out engaging in a way that brings history to life. But somewhere about half way through, it becomes steadily becomes more and more jumbled and confusing, with the author dropping names and personal “insight” that takes from his writing. Sadly, I gave up about 3/4 through.I bought new, and would make a different choice if I had a do over. But if you get a good used copy, the first half is well worth it.

Highly informative history of bourbon and its place in American culture. Fascinating and valuable insights into recent and current production and marketing aspects of the bourbon industry. Well-researched and revelatory. Whether you're new to bourbon or a long-standing devotee, you'll find this a worthwhile investment of time that will make you a more selective shopper and consumer.

While this book does get a little tedious at times, it's a fairly fast read and gives you a ton of information about how bourbon grew up in the United States. It also gives you a lot to think about as a bourbon drinker. I first picked it up when I read an excerpt where the author was talking about the dubious value of small, craft bourbons versus some of the products distilled at the larger companies. Just goes to show that small is not always better. It also gave me a few names to search for in the liquor store!

I relied on this book when my son was a toddler (1984). A friend's son was recently diagnosed, so I bought this revised edition for her. It is a "bible" for any parent to educate themselves about asthma. It also contains information about real situations that other parents have experienced. Very valuable information! A must for every parent of an asthmatic child.

Great compact book filled with knowledge.

I have read numerous books about asthma in children, but this book is by far the best. The information is presented in a clear, understandable way, but is not so simplified as to be unhelpful. The book is full of good tips and pertinent information; it's like spending an hour or two talking with an asthma specialist. The book has what I found to be invaluable information about how to monitor asthma in children who are too young to use peak flow meters. A system called "asthma signs" is used and is a wonderful way to identify problems and monitor asthma in young children. There is a also a very helpful section on traveling with a child who has asthma. If I were to recommend only one book on asthma in children, this would be the book.

This book became my single source for reference about asthma. Till I found this book, I was reading anything and everything that I could find on the net about asthma. My 3 year old had an asthma episode as a result of a viral infection. She has an excellent pediatrician and we chose to care for her at home. I got great comfort in knowing that the things we did intuitively were the recommended things in this book. It helps to have a good doctor. It also helps to have this book as a friend. While I was freaking out that my daughter had asthma, this book helped me calm down cos I realized that it could be worse. My heart goes out to all the children who suffer. If you are a parent of a young child with asthma, read this book. It will help you understand what asthma is all about in plain words and give you an idea of what you can do to make your child's life more comfortable by learning to identify the symptoms and manage your child's asthma better. Make sure you have a good doctor, too!!

Dr. Plaut was coming to a town near me to speak shortly after my daughter was hospitalized for the third time. One of the nurses handed me a flyer and recommended I go hear him. I bought his book before I went. This book was a lifesaver. I first read it nearly 10 years ago (spring 1992) and my daughter has not been hospitalized since! Dr. Plaut gives the average parent the confidence to handle this illness without falling apart and without having to decipher the medical-ese being spoken by the doctors in charge of their child.

I came across Plaut's book in the aftermath of my 9 year old son's first and life threatening asthma episode just 6 weeks ago. Since then my son's condition has been stabilized with some wonderful medical help. But nothing has been better in understanding the disease, the treatment, and the myriad of medications recommended for it, than Tom Plaut's book. It is now my asthma bible. No one affected by asmtha in any way should miss it!

This book is the only one that I need. It has been a great help in developing skills to assess the severity of an attack. It also has great coping skills in it. I do a workshop on CREATING A HEALTHY APPROACH TO LIVING WITH ASTHMA: TENDING THE BODY, MIND, SPIRIT OF YOURSELF AND YOUR CHILD and this book has been a great reference tool for me!

I wish that I had known of this book 5 years ago! It has been immensely helpful in assessing the severity of an attack. I teach a workshop about dealing with body, mind, and spirit of parents and children with asthma and this book is a great reference for this.

Dru Lavigne is the Brian Kernighan of the BSD world. All things she has written are eminently readable, and this small book is no exception. Most of the tips are for FreeBSD and assume you're using csh/tcsh (hopefully tcsh!!), but most of the tips can be applied to other BSDs with relative ease. The BSDs have diverged from each other considerably, but the base system of each has most of the tools needed to do the things listed in this book. Some are fairly obvious, some are not, but all are written in Dru Lavigne's breezy and fun style which makes reading through this book such a joy. Highly recommended, especially if you're a Linux person thinking about dipping your toes into the BSD world (come on over, we have cake on the dark side!) and are slightly confounded at the minor but significant differences in the feel of the BSDs versus X or Y or Z Linux.

Why aren't there more books like this? I wish the authors who created these types of books would start a kickstarter project. I have no doubt they would meet their quota.

I have been a fan of Dru's articles on O'Reilly's ONLamp website for some time, so purchasing this book was a no-brainer for me. After just 30 minutes of thumbing through this book, my impression was that it would be a 'steal' at twice the price. After spending an entire evening reading and applying some of her 'hacks' this book has earned a spot of honor on my shelf right next to "Absolute BSD" by Michael W. Lucas. The writing is straight-forward with a minumum of 'fluff', so an intermediate to experienced sysadmin can apply the tips and tricks offered in a very short period of time. If you want to save yourself hours/days/weeks of trolling 'PowerUser' forums, and archived mailing lists I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Even though it is 10 years old, I'm happy to have this book and learn some neat tricks about the cli and OS.

excellent book, lots of great commands to get you used to the command line. Only downfall is Amazon is not packaging their books well anymore, I ordered $100 worth of books that were all thrown in a box and arrived all banged up! This is the 2nd order in a row, I will think twice about ordering again as I dont care for my books being all banged up! They used to use a cellofane wrapper to hold them all together but guess it was a cost cutting measure, sad to see damaged books that could be prevented with a little care!

very good

excellent book, thank you ...

Make this the FreeBSD book you buy after you've got a basic understanding of the operating system. In other words, this is a very useful "sidekick" BSD book. It's full of creative and practical hacks, and the price is right. Highly recommended.
