Review

“I trust Lindsay Anderson and Dana Vanveller to tell great stories, keep me entertained, and teach me something about Canadian food that I wouldn't have learned anywhere else. Inspiring recipes are the crux of this cookbook, but the personal narratives are what make you want to read it cover to cover.” —Carey Polis, editor of BonAppetit.com   “Feast is a book that pulls the blinders off and lets us see the complexity of Canadian regional gastronomy. It's a book like this that makes me want to truly wander and appreciate this amazing country for all it has to offer.” —Hugh Acheson, chef and author   “Canada’s cuisine is a giant, multicoloured tapestry that blankets the country from coast to coast to coast. And after journeying through this great land, Lindsay and Dana have woven together the many flavours they discovered into this beautiful book. Wrap yourself in its warm embrace!” —Chef Michael Smith   “Feast is a beautiful culinary adventure through Canada that you can take from your home kitchen. It will make you want to cook, explore, and maybe even book a ticket to go see those Manitoba polar bears for yourself!” —Molly Yeh, blogger   “Ready to munch your way across Canada on a delicious voyage of discovery? This is the way to do it.  What a fun book—see the country while tasting its delights. And delights they are, from the exotic, like Bison Sausage Rolls and Reindeer Meatloaf, to what you thought was conventional but is far from it on this voyage, like Giant Lobster Rolls and Pan-Fried Whitefish (with Fireweed Jelly Beet Greens, of course!). And please, don't get me started on the sweet stuff—do the words “Cape Breton Butterscotch Pie” sound tempting? The hard content of this book comes with the recipes, but the real reward is the sense of travel—the diversity of a country from coast to coast to coast whose natural beauty is the envy of the world, and now the spectacular meals we put in front of us are too!” —Peter Mansbridge   “I have such respect for these two women who have shared their sense of humour, knowledge, and passion for Canadian cuisine. This is an amazing road trip, and an amazing book! I love this beautiful country so much, but if I ever forget, Feast will be an excellent reminder.” —Chef Lynn Crawford   “Feast showcases the diversity of our landscape and at the same time gives insight into the wild ingredients, products, climates, and cultures that coexist in our country. Congrats to Lindsay and Dana—what an incredible journey.” —Chef Daniel Burns, chef/owner of Tørst   “With passion and humour, Lindsay and Dana capture the essence of our country’s diverse food culture and present it in an inspiring cookbook. Feast will forever change how you view Canadian cuisine.” —Aimée Wimbush-Bourque, blogger and author of Brown Eggs and Jam Jars   “Join Lindsay and Dana as they reveal a bounty that will scoot you into the kitchen to cook up a real Canadian feast. A must-read for anyone interested in food as it’s enjoyed in Canada.” —Elizabeth Baird“A beautiful culinary adventure through Canada that you can take from your home kitchen. It will make you want to cook, explore, and maybe even book a ticket to go see those Manitoba polar bears for yourself!” —Molly Yeh, blogger and author of Molly on the Range

Beautiful book. Only wish there was an index of recipes based by location.

Menus from the Great White North.100% Fattening :)

To say Feast is not the book I expected is an understatement. In my head as I listened to the authors talk about their cross-country recipe collecting I thought it was going to be a book about their adventure along with some recipes. It is not. It is almost entirely recipes from people they met and many times using local ingredients. As a result, if you do not live in that particular region a lot of the recipes can not be adequately created.Although there are lots of photos of people in the book most of the time they are facing away from the camera. There were no captions so I had no idea who most of the people were. This alienated me from the book. The tendency of the book to insert a page about their experience in a province in the middle of the recipes was so very confusing. When it comes to recipes I tackled Greg’s Bella Coola Bannock which was fairly straightforward and made in a cast iron pan. They plumped up in the pan and browned nicely. I thought this was an OK recipe but nothing to write home about, unfortunately. I then decided to try Stephanie Le‘s Pork & Shrimp Wontons. I thought it was the perfect choice considering I live in Vancouver too like the recipe's author and could get special ingredients for her wontons. I had to go looking for Chinese black vinegar and sweet soy sauce for the recipe which I did successfully buy but could not find wood ear mushrooms. Frustrating! I used shiitake mushrooms instead. These were pretty good but again, I have had and made better.I conclude this is more of a food fantasy cookbook for the culinary Canadian out there. It is definitely a cookbook, not a foodie biography. I was hoping to see selfies and silly photos, read more stories… But! This is an exceptionally in-depth cookbook about food you can only find in Canada. It is a beautiful book that clearly a ton of work went into. If you are looking for a unique cookbook out there for the Canadian foodie-enthusiast I highly recommend it. If you are like me and want to hear the chronological story of their trip across Canada, sadly, it is a pass.

This book is truly a feast for all your senses! I pre-ordered my copy, and was delighted that it arrived several days early. I spent much time perusing through it, enjoying the authors' witty banter and engaging stories just as much as the cultural aspect and delicious looking recipes. It really is so much more than a recipe book, and gave me a new perspective on areas of Canada that I have not yet visited, and an appreciation for those I have. Each recipe is photographed beautifully, which makes them all the more appealing. Even my ten year old son enjoyed it, exclaiming over several different recipes that "we have to make!". We made the Apple Butter Sorbet, and it was rich and delicious, with equal parts sweet and tart. You can tell the authors see the value of food for more than just sustenance, and although some might be time consuming, I love the idea of food as a way to bring people together while they spend time on a common goal - whether it's preparing it or consuming it.You definitely won't regret this masterpiece, and I predict my coffee table and my kitchen will be fighting over it for quite some time.

What a lovely tour of Canada- forkful by forkful. Energized by a sense of discovery and national pride, Anderson and Vanveller take us on an adventure from coast to coast, of this diverse and flavorful country. From Yukon Sourdough Buns, Cape Breton Caramel Pie and Reindeer Bacon - this is a spirited ride -complete with the homegrown photos of the authors themselves.

2.5 starsThere doesn’t seem to be a definitive Canadian cookbook, and the authors of Feast squandered their chance. This is not a Canadian cookbook; this is a book with recipes from a road trip they made Up North. The recipes aren’t even arranged by province. To make matters worse, thrown in willy nilly are vapid vignettes of each province. Why does Yukon go with appetizers? We’ll never know. And what does seeing two bald eagles fight have to do with the Canadian experience? Your job, as authors, is to make that connection. Unfortunately, there are no worthy introductions to any province, nor to Canada, its history, or cuisine. But there so easily could be! The authors mention that sourdough played a role in the Gold Rush. Tell me how, because I am intrigued. They also mention Russian immigration. Tell me how and where and when. Tell me if they brought more than the clichéd borscht with them. And please tell me why there’s a Sri Lankan curry appetizer in Toronto, because the story would be fascinating and I really want to know it. Give. Me. Details! It’s a wasted opportunity for the authors, who could have written a milestone work. Instead, they wrote a scrapbook that will mean little to anyone but themselves.I will give the authors credit for including photographs with each recipe and for suggesting substitutions for hard-to-find items.I will update if I decide to make anything from the book.

Beautiful photography and easy-to-follow recipes lead you into an adventure of food! With Canadian staples like Nanaimo bars, and more adventurous recipes like reindeer meatloaf, there's something for everyone. Great to buy your own copy and an extra to give as a gift!

I like to have some books at the house when the grand kids come to visit. They picked this one out.....It's a fun book for them to read along with me.

I'm going to side with every other member of this book's fan club. I bought his because I have a beautiful little boy who has some very specialized challenges, and I loved the message this book sends...that you can be different, you can even not be good at certain things in other people's eyes, but there can still be something beautiful only you can contribute. And I want my son to know and to hear that message that just like Gerald the Giraffe, he's got a very special dance that he'll be able to do. And I want him to be able to see that it's possible too, because I know sometimes it can be hard, especially when you're in therapy all the time and therapy is all about what's not going well and what's not going like normal, so I truly think this book has great value especially for kiddos who may struggle to do things the way other people "normally" do. It sends a very nice "yes you can" message, and I love it.

Let me start by saying that I absolutely love this book, and so does my daughter. The rhymes are lovely (except for a slight break in rhythm on the very last one), the pictures are fun and full of great detail, and the story about finding oneself and not succumbing to peer pressure and stereotypes is great and important!However... I really think the cricket does not get enough credit! In fact, Gerald almost becomes a bit cocky in the end, as if he had achieved this feat of realizing his potential all by himself, when, in fact, without the cricket he still wouldn't believe in himself. And here I think the book misses a great opportunity to emphasize the value of friendship, empathy, and helping others.Luckily, this can be fixed very easily. I therefore added a final rhyme to the book that I think adds to the value. I hope others may find it useful as well. It goes as follows:Just sometimes we need a friend to help,to find out song and tune. And to the cricket Gerald said:I found mine, thanks to you!:)

There's a reason this book is a top seller, it's adorable! I first read this book in a toddler book club when I was a nanny, I now read this book to my own children. I have read this book probably a hundred + times (not an exaggeration) and I still love it. I haven't found a child who didn't like this book, it's so cute. Great story, nice colorful illustrations. I highly recommend this book!

My husband and I have mixed feelings about the message this book sends. We both agree there seems to be a moral here, but what it is in unclear. I believe this book is suggesting that after the giraffe was teased, he found a way to not only fit in but be better than all the other animals. Why does the giraff have to dance to be liked by the others? Couldn’t the giraffe find another activity he excels at and be happy with himself? I don’t normally have these reactions to my infant son’s books and I’m giving this one away.

Giraffes Can't Dance is a great read that promotes confidence and positive self-esteem in children, as well as empathy and respect for people who are different. The book is about a giraffe named Gerald who wants to dance, but is continuously made fun of and shunned by other animals. He finally meets a cricket that tells him that everyone is capable of accomplishing their dreams in their own unique way. Originally, I bought this book for a pre-k class, and the kids loved it so much that we made animal masks and had our own dance party, showing off our unique dance moves. I have also bought this book for my children, and have given it as a present to several others. I highly recommend this book to anyone.I have only purchased the board book, and it has held up very well over the past 2 years. It's about 29 pages long and very sturdy.

This book is amazing, easily the favorite book in our toddler's library! Unlike other books, I never get tired of reading it over and over. On the surface, its about a giraffe dancing, but it goes so much deeper than that. It's about a giraffe who IS TOLD by others that he can't dance and is laughed off by all the animals. The giraffe gets great advice that allows him to be himself, find his own style, and not care about what others think. Suddenly the giraffe is dancing and all the other animals who had sneered are now watching him in awe. The message is to believe in yourself, do what makes you feel happy, you are amazing in your own way. The illustrations are colorful and engaging, and the rhythm/rhyme in the story make this ideal for a wide age range (infant to elementary age).

I'm a preschool teacher so I not only read a lot of books, I can tell when a book is good or not. This book is so cute and has a wonderful message at the end of the story; basically don't worry about what others think or say about you, as long as you believe in yourself and like yourself, that's all that matters. The illustrations are colorful and fun. I love stories that rhyme because children seem to sometimes enjoy the story more and this book delivers. Lastly, since becoming a parent, I can see how this being a board book can be easy to travel with in the diaper bag so that the story can be read on the go in the car or at grandma's house. Overall a great book.

This book gives you plenty of ideas on what you can put in your food dehydrator. Unlike a lot of food dehydrator books, this one gives you recipes on what you can do with all of that dried food you’ll have after reading this book.I have been dehydrating foods for over 30 years. Anytime I find a new book on the subject, I’ll pick up a copy hoping it will give me some new ideas of things to try. This book did not disappoint. One recipe I especially want to try is the dehydrated and powdered kimchi. Another recipe is dehydrated citrus zest.► TOP 3 THINGS I LIKED♦ The recipes used ingredients that I can easily find at one of my local grocery stores, nothing too obscure♦ The book is well organized and has recipes for dehydrating meats, veggies, fruits, and it even has a section for other foods♦ The author notes those other helpful kitchen tools that you will need if you don’t have a lot of dehydrator experience► RATING OF KEY FEATURES♦ Recipes were well laid out, I didn’t note any missing text or steps♦The book had a hyperlinked table of contents, which also included page numbers. The page numbers are also hyperlinked, but don’t really add much to the Kindle version.♦ The book had a hyperlinked recipe index. The recipe index referenced page numbers, which are of little use to a kindle device♦ The book offers high resolution bright color images when expanded and zoomed. I didn’t see any of those grainy low resolution images that look crappy when you zoom in for a better look.► ANY SPECIAL FEATURES♦ Any temperatures or provided in both Fahrenheit and Celsius, weight and volume measurements are in pounds, cups, and grams.► SUMMARYThe book gives a lot of variety and inspirational ideas on food dehydration, and even a few unique recipes that I have not seen elsewhere. Scroll back up and take a look at the Table of Contents. If you own a food dehydrator, or interested in getting one, then this is one of the books you should pick up and add to your cookbook collection. This book will give you ideas of foods you can dehydrate that I have not seen in other food dehydrator books that I own.

I bought this for my mom, who just got a new dehydrator. She sat down and read it from cover to cover (which is not like her at all). She said she learned a lot about dehydrating and was fascinated by all the recipes. She likes that they're unique, but still something she will use. Sometimes recipes can get a little too fancy with ingredients or be too involved. This book is the perfect combination of unique and practical.

I love this book-- it is SO beautifully written/photographed! I've recommended this to at least a dozen friends-- mostly because they come over and spot it on my counter straight away. Also, the recipes really stand out from most I've seen in dehydrating books; they're very interesting flavor combinations and I love them. It gives me a ton more ideas and has helped me literally save my garden as it grows faster than I can eat fresh.

Wonderful recipes! Very imaginative ways to use my dehydrator.

I recently purchased a food dehydrator. Although it came with a recipe booklet it just had a few and I wanted something with more recipes. This book is great and I can't wait to try some of these awesome recipes.

Great book that gives alternative ways to dehydrate food. Interesting recipes on making your own tea blends.

Love this book! Perfect to give as a gift w/ a dehydrator.

wife love it

Review

A fresh and thoroughly researched account of Doulas Mawson's epic journey of self-rescue across one of the most inhospitable regions known to man. Roberts takes the reader alongside the men of the 1912 Australasian Antarctic Expedition, and the desperation of Mawson s sledge journey can be well imagined step by frigid step. --Ed Viesturs, author of K2: Life and Death on the World s Most Dangerous Mountain"This is Roberts at his best, telling a little-known tale of adventure, tragedy, and endurance. Mawson may be the most famous Australian explorer, and Alone on the Ice is an admirable introduction of him to American readers. --Greg Child, author of Over the Edge"If you like frostbite-inducing weather and death-defying adventure stories, then award-winning author David Roberts gives you what you want: a wonderfully told, impressively researched tale of brave explorers confronting Antarctic blizzards, a deadly landscape pockmarked with deep crevasses and intrepid men trying to come back alive. --Chuck Leddy"An important missing story from the heroic age of Antarctic exploration, this book will steal the night from you. Gripping and superb. --Laurence Gonzales, author of Surviving S"Others have written the loose outlines of Douglas Mawson s astonishing survival against the worst conditions that Antarctica can deliver a lesser-known but equally compelling epic as that of Ernest Shackleton but Roberts s telling trumps them all. --Gordon Wiltsie, author of To the Ends of"An accurate and enthralling account of the greatest storyofpolar exploration and survival. Roberts takes the reader back to a time of hardship, collective friendship, and a level of determination unknown in todays culture. This bookwill make youcherish every meal and the joys of a warm bed. --Conrad Anker, coauthor of The Lost Explo"

Author of The Mountain Of Fear, David Roberts delivers one of the most remarkable survival stories ever told. This heart-racing adventure of courage, strength, and the will to live is indeed a book that will keep you awake all night, impossible to put down! Within the first few chapters, the reader will begin to feel almost as if caffeine is pumping through their blood as we read about near-death situations. Douglas Mawson, a great explorer and expedition leader of the Australasian Antarctic finds himself starving, crawling, and escaping dangerous situations in extreme cold weather situations. His team of men were against all odds in surviving the almost impossible horrifying events that were thrown upon them with no food, no first-aid, and no supplies to help them in their amazing journey. As those who managed to survive had to battle with fear in near-misses, and the only thing that kept them alive was their incredible spirit. This adventure is chilling from beginning to end with colorful characters, stunning photos, and an eye-opener story of courage. Entertaining, riveting, heart-pounding, and impressive. Highly recommended!

After whipping through a couple great polar exploration books, I got a copy of Alone on the Ice. (Btw, I highly recommend both of these: Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage, which is the well known account of Shackleton's ill-fated, but miraculous survival in Antarctic and Arctic Adventure: My Life in the Frozen North, which though hugely popular in its day, is something of a lost classic that is a great read filled with lots of well told dramatic adventure while [unlike Endurance] giving insight into native Eskimo culture, which is fascinating.)In "Alone on the Ice," David Roberts tells the true story of what Sir Edmund Hillary called "the greatest survival story in the history of exploration." Hillary was referring to the 1912 expedition of Australian explorer Douglas Mawson and his fellow members of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE). Mawson and cohorts set out to explore Antarctica with the intention of gathering specimens and to make scientific observations of the continent. What has left Mawson's considerable accomplishments and amazing survival story obscured by the layers of newsprint and time is--unlike Roald Amundsen and Robert Scott--he wasn't a pole bagger. Mawson, never grabbed headlines by "summiting" the south pole. Mawson and the AAE's expedition went virtually unnoticed by the public. Now, at the 100th year anniversary of the expedition, Roberts tells the story of Mawson, alone after his companions had died during the expedition, an expedition that saw them trek over 600 miles round trip while being face with 100 miles per hour winds, and left with little of their original provisions. Left as a lone explorer, Mawson was forced to make a ninety-five mile trek across the Antarctic Ice while battling extreme hunger, madness, and the deadly terrain of the continent.During his trek Mawson often had to crawl as a result of losing the flesh from the soles of his feet. And at one point, he fell into a deadly crevice that would have likely killed almost anyone else. However, Mawson, inspired by a poem by Robert. W. Service, was able to extricate himself out of the crevice with what could only be considered superhuman strength, determination, and extraordinary will. Roberts tells Mawson's story well and has seemingly done his research thorough, including some great, rarely-seen photos (one of an iced-over face is bizarre, as is the shot of an explorer's contortions to stay upright in a 100-mile an hour wind). The photos are by Frank Hurley, who is famous from his Endurance photos. In sum, this is a very engaging read. Robert's detailed description of Mawson's determination, perseverance, and courage gives Mawson the heroic recognition while provided classic adventure story entertainment.

This factual recounting of a scientific expedition to Antarctica is at times unbelievable, at times inspiring, at times tragic. The author never sensationalizes the facts or the telling of them, which makes the story even more incredible and a fantastic page-turner.

An interesting book about an amazing Antartic survival story, in which Douglas Mawson sledged alone to reach his base. I learned a great deal about Antarctica and the costs of exploration from it.

This book is essentially a biography of Douglas Mawson, the Australian Antarctic explorer who in 1912 survived a 30-day, almost 300-mile trek alone back to camp after his two teammates died. One of his teammates fell down a crevasse along with the sledge that carried most of the team's important equipment and most of its food, and the other died thereafter due to exposure, so Mawson had to survive on half or fewer rations. Mawson was a geology professor at the University of Adelaide and wanted to explore as much of the continent as possible rather than reach the South Pole (he was with Shackleton in 1908 when they came within 95 miles of the pole). He formed the Australasian Expedition with 24 members who landed and wintered over in what turned out to be the windiest spot on earth; some of the members, including Mawson, spent two winters there. The book is well-organized and Roberts is a great storyteller who argues that from a scientific standpoint the expedition achieved and explored more than those of the more famous Antarctic explorers Amundsen, Scott and Shackleton. Roberts finds little fault with Mawson and reviewed many letters, diaries and other primary sources. Roberts may have gone a little overboard defending Mawson against attacks made in 2001 by the son of one of the other expedition members. At the end of the book Roberts makes a perfunctory comment that Mawson had his faults, but the book rarely delved into them. Some people doubt Mawson's story that, after his teammates died, he fell in a crevasse to a depth of 14 feet hanging only by a rope, and in his weakened and starved condition climbed hand-over-hand most of the way, fell back down, then climbed hand-over-hand a second time to escape the crevasse. The book discusses a modern attempt (which failed) to replicate this feat and others have expressed doubt about its authenticity, but makes no comment on whether Mawson fabricated or embellished the story. One hundred years later I don't think anyone can say if the story is definitely true or not, but Roberts should at least have acknowledged that others doubt Mawson was telling the truth about it.
