My oldest son dislikes to read, at least until he read this book. I dearly hope this author writes more children's books, we'll buy them all. There are, in my opinion, not enough books written to serve the age range from 9-12. There are plenty of picture books and plenty of young adult books, but very little fiction that adequately bridges them. This one does it. It's a wonderful mystery story that can be enjoyed by either gender. It's also very current. My boys especially liked reading a story where the kids in it discussed their Playstation 3s and Harry Potter books. As much as I love Judy Blume and Beverly Clearly as a kid, my children struggled to relate to stories from a few generations ago. For my boys there is an even bigger struggle to relate, since many of the books in the 9-12 age range seem to be written from the female POV. It may seem silly to us fuddy duddies, but this latest generation needs something to interest them enough to pull them from the internet/TV/video games. This book does that and I really can't recommend it enough.
This was an altogether fun read!Don't hold the fact against him that Mr. Grabenstein used to write in James Patterson's book factory. We found this book to be an absolutely delightful, engaging read. Grabenstein is clearly big on libraries as centers of discovery, learning and community. Twelve twelve-year-olds, who have never been in a library due to their town's library being torn down twelve years ago, compete to go to the grand opening of Mr. Lemoncello's library. Once there, they find themselves locked in and are told that their goal is to use the library and all its resources to discover a hidden exit for a grand prize. Mr. Lemoncello is a great game-maker and some of the clues come from his games, while others come from the ten Dewey Decimal Rooms, a holographic librarian and holographic creatures, and pictograms hidden in books.Grabenstein cleverly reinforces the idea that reading is, itself, a rewarding activity, and those who take time to focus on the process are rewarded more than those who try to take short cuts. He also emphasizes such values as loyalty, team-work, and respect. Titles of many famous children's books are sprinkled throughout Mr. Lemoncello's conversations and the clues. There is also a puzzle not in the story that can be solved and sent into Mr. Grabenstein for a chance to win two libraries of books. Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library is a fast read. Mr. Grabenstein also does a very good job of creating distinct characters. None of the kids feels like a carbon copy of the other; they're all fleshed out in ways that help you get a sense of what motivates them.
This is a fantastic read for boys and girls alike in the late elementary or early MS years. I bought it for my own kids based on another friend's recommendation, and all three have read and reread it. I have also purchased a copy for cousins, now, in the same age group. As an employee at a public school, I have also hard fantastic reviews from a lot of kids, mostly grades 5-7.
I was highly entertained by this book. But I can understand why there are not so good feelings about it too. Well, the Library is not what we 'old folks' are used to. But times are changing and so are the reading skills as well. I guess just timing a youth up with a book and tell him/her to read, does not work out the way it used to.Mr. Lemoncello was an eager Library Visitor in his young years. Now that he has grown up and earned millions with his much beloved computergames, he spends his money in renovating the Library of his old hometown Alexandria. His intention is, to bring young gamers on to loving books as well.The very smart Librarian MRs. Dr. Zinchenko set up a game in which 12 Children do participate. The first one to find the way out of the Library (not the way they came in) in 12 hours time will win a price.I won't tell anymore about the game and the characters, but I will say, that I liked the references to classic and modern literature. And most of all it was enjoyable to read how the protagonist Kyle Keeley became fond of reading. Also nice to see, how the children did or did not help each other.I loved this book very much and will read the german version as well. It will be intresting to read which booktitles where chosen to make a sense out the Puzzles. And I think this will be THE BOOK to read to my grandson.
Hurrah!! As a Children's Librarian I think it's the best children's mysteries since maybe Westing Game. Maybe even better since I haven't read Westing Game for years. As an adult, it was so fun to discover all the books mentioned within the story. And the library - Oh, what a library. it's a shame that libraries can't afford to be like Mr Lemoncello's. I've even recommended this book to my Book Club which is mostly people over retirement age.
This is the best book in the worldKyle Keely is the biggest class clown in the class. He gets grounded for breaking a window to win a board game. He dosn't remember the extra credit assignment his teacher gave him. Wheen he figures out that he could get out of his groundation AND get to spend the night in Mr. Lemmoncello's he quickly writes down these words on a peice.of paper "There might be ballons". He dosn't get in but he emails Mr. Lemmoncello a assignment on the computer. When he gets in the next day Mr. Lemmoncello said to him "Kyle Keely. The boy who proved that the game isn't over till it's over". His freind Akimi Hughes also gets in. But among the twelve smarmy Charles Chilington gets in. At first they play games and a lot of stuff and go to bed. The next day they are awoken by the music from Rocky. When they all go into the reading rotunda they here Mr.Lemmoncello talk. Lemoncello is not just a master game maker billionaire he isalso extremely eccentric. They must escape from the library but the library has a vault door and no windows. Can Kyle Keely and his crew of freinds, Akimi hughes, Seirra Russel, Migeul Ferdinand, and Haley Daley team up to beat Charles and Andrew (The others lost)? Find out in thia amazing book by Chris Grabenstein.
