Dave, Debbie, and Di are siblings. They each have their own unique appearance, but when you see them standing near each other, you know, instantly, that they belong together. That’s how it is with Gretchen Rubin’s books. Each one is distinctive and has a unique message, but when you read more than one, you understand that they all go together. The latest book in that collection is The Four Tendencies: The Indispensable Personality Profiles That Reveal How to Make Your Life Better (And Other People’s Lives Better, Too).If you noted “personality types” in the title and figured this is yet another book about personality types that are based on Jungian psychology, you’re in luck. It’s not. In fact, I’m not sure that “personality types” is even the right description for what Gretchen Rubin calls “tendencies.” They don’t come from psychology at all. They grew out of an insightful answer to a puzzling question. Here’s how Rubin describes it in the book.“And here was my crucial insight: Depending on a person’s response to outer and inner expectations, that person falls into one of four distinct types: Upholders respond readily to both outer expectations and inner expectations Questioners question all expectations; they meet an expectation only if they believe it’s justified, so in effect they respond only to inner expectations Obligers respond readily to outer expectations but struggle to meet inner expectations Rebels resist all expectations, outer and inner alike.”The first part of the book describes how that insight came about and offers an overview of what she calls the four tendencies. Then, the bulk of the book is devoted to the four sections, one for each of the four tendencies. Each section has a chapter on understanding the tendency and one on dealing with it. Here’s a list of the tendencies, with Rubin’s catch-phrase for each one.Upholder: “Discipline is my freedom”Questioner: “I’ll comply – if you convince me why”Obliger: “You can count on me, and I’m counting on you to count on me”Rebel: “You can’t make me, and neither can I”This book is like Gretchen Rubin’s other books. It’s engaging, and well-written. It’s based on some unique research. There’s a test where you can determine your own tendency. One option is to answer the questions as they appear in the book. The other option is to follow the link to the book website and take the test there. I recommend the latter. It will give you a good idea of where you fit as a primary tendency. Then, as you read the book, you’ll learn a bit about what other tendencies you lean toward. You Probably Won’t Like This Book If…You probably won’t like this book if you don’t like simplified presentations of complex subjects. Some people find these sorts of things, especially these 2x2 matrices, helpful. I’m one of them. But I know from talking to my friends and working with my clients that you and I may not see this issue the same way.You probably won’t like this book if you’re searching for hard science of some kind. Yes, there is a large and well thought out survey that underlies the tendencies, but if you’re looking for several academic papers and lots of laboratory research to support what’s here, you’ll be disappointed. You Probably Will Like This Book If…You’ll probably like this book if you’ve liked Gretchen Rubin’s other books. There’s the same common sense melded with experiment and the same engaging writing style.Obviously, you’ll also like this book if you enjoy simplified explanations of complex issues. Ditto if you like 2x2 matrices. You will probably like this book if you try to put some of it to work. Reading some books is like studying history. You can read the book and get the points and increase your knowledge. But other books, and this is one of them, repay some personal real-world trials. In other words, it’s more like learning to swim than it is like learning history. Try out the ideas you get from the book to see if they work for you.If You’re a Coach or Other Helping Professional…If you’re a coach or other helping professional, you should try some things to see if they work for you and with your clients. I work with writers, and I coach people through the book-writing process. The book gave me several ways to help people achieve what they want to achieve. I now know that there are some people that don’t want me as an accountability partner and others who will really appreciate my ability to get projects on track. I’ve always known that there were those differences, but The Four Tendencies gives me a language for talking about them and a template for using them more effectively. In A NutshellIf you are a coach, or a consultant, or a medical professional, or anyone who helps people achieve things they want to achieve, The Four Tendencies should be on your shelf, but don’t just leave it there. Read it. Experiment with what you find. Put it to work.

When I saw advertised on Amazon The Four Tendencies: The Indispensable Personality Profiles That Reveal How to Make Your Life Better (and Other People's Lives Better, Too) I said yes, send it along. I’m guessing that like me, many readers would like to know how to make life better! Will Gretchen Rubin, our author, deliver on her promise? For some people, yes. They will see themselves and others well described in this book and think about things they might do to be more effective in accomplishing their goals and objectives at home and at work.Gretchen begins her book with a test we need to take to identify our most important Tendency: Upholder, Obliger, Rebel, and Questioner. Gretchen tells us: “You are the best judge of yourself. If you believe that a different Tendency describes you better, trust yourself.” I took the test and the results told me that I am a Questioner. This result is accurate, but like the good questioner that I am, I question the validity of Gretchen’s test. Is it reliable, valid, independent, and comprehensive? The answer is no. We need to do just what Gretchen says; that is, look at the descriptions of each Tendency and decide for ourselves what Tendency describes us best.Does the fact that her test is not valid mean that Gretchen’s book is useless? Not at all. Many readers are going to enjoy Gretchen’s relaxed and breezy style of writing as she talks about our Tendencies and how they affect our interactions with people at home and at work. Her book is often a “fun read.” Her book may not qualify as science, but her observations about people are often valid. She says about me that I put a high value on reason, research, and information. Absolutely! Also, she tells me that I make decisions based on information and reason. Right again. She goes on to say that as a Questioner I hate anything arbitrary. Well, hate is too strong a word, but by and large she is correct. Gretchen described me well and I think many other people who read her book are going to agree that one of her Tendencies is going to accurately describe the way they behave with people at home and at work. Most self-help books and self-help tests don’t qualify as science. Even a famous test like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) has received much criticism from scientists. That criticism does not stop more than 2.5 million people from taking this test every year. We should be guided by science, but not ruled by it, at least in my opinion. Remember, as a Questioner I even question some of the results science gives us, particularly when these results come from our doctors. My doctor tells me that science tells him that taking supplements like glucosamine for knee pain is useless. I question his findings; my glucosamine supplement definitely helps my knees. My doctor tells me it is all in my head. I tell him my head is not a bad place to start if my head helps relieve the pain in my knees.Gretchen’s test for the four Tendencies may not be valid according to strict scientific standards, but much of her advice and counsel is valid, at least for me. Additionally, Gretchen invites readers to participate in her blogs and web site. She wants to open up communication with as many readers as are interested in communicating with her and other like-minded people. Her book will provide all the particulars readers need to hook up with her.

Review

"In this dazzling dialogue, Zizek and Milbank change words and cross swords, until the point where both recognize that Christ and Hegel, in their monstrosity, look very much alike. A phenomenal achievement!"--Catherine Malabou, Maitre de Conferences, Philosophy Department, Universite Paris-X Nanterre"The contemporary return to the theological most dramatically occurs in this book, as Zizek fully realizes his earlier Hegelian and Lacanian theological work, a work that Milbank can essentially know as a uniquely modern expression of nihilism. Nonetheless Milbank enters into a genuine theological dialogue with this nihilism, and a truly new theological discourse occurs. This effects a paradoxical union between orthodoxy and heterodoxy, and between radical orthodoxy and radical heterodoxy, which is perhaps the deepest motif of the contemporary return to the theological."--Thomas J. J. Altizer, author of "Godhead and the Nothing"

ORTHODOXY AND POSTMODERN THOUGHT, POSSIBLE? - "YES"John Milbank gives us a well-researched an all-inclusive presentation of an orthodox alternative to the neo-left Hegelians of postmodern philosophy and theology. Quite a bit impressed me, but I'll touch on a few highlights:1. First, he presents his position within the neo-left context of Hegel's psychology and addresses each component of this context. This is important for an adequate debate and comparison.2. His approach is systematic, but be prepared for extensive discourse and elaboration on the views he is opposing. Sometimes these run a little long.3. He will not specifically explain the existential qualification of the unconscious by Kierkegaard , as opposed to Sartre on the left; but this is his stance.4. He presents very organized sub-sections: externality, the unconscious, the realm of consciousness, positing, and mediation. For example he gives you externality as: workspace, horizon, and naming; and consciousness as: workspace, horizon, and naming also. Therefore , the subjective and the objective can be directly correlated.5. He also is very precise when discussing positing as God willing himself. He articulates 7 precise steps which will pass through the unconscious, not just cognition.6. Mediation of beauty is a Masterpiece of its own, combining disclosure and judgment.7. Defining the motivational set in the explored unconscious will require using Augustine and Schelling to deconstruct the deconstructionists.Although, not favorable toward Hegel (which I expected); I would still say that I truly appreciated such an informed and inclusive presentation. You cannot ignore him. In fact you will, of necessity integrate some of his ideas - "beauty", for example.Milbank is such a profound and obviously hard-working scholar; that I cannot help but highly recommend this volume to you. Orthodox or not; you need this presentation. His section runs about 124 pages (a small book of its own).

Great book - Z and M lay out their positions so clearly a confessor couldn't ask for more. I shall not recap the debate but throw in some of my own thoughts, for what they're worth, in the hope that they help clarify for those who has already read the book. If you haven't read the book - do so - it is well worth the small effort.1. Dialectic involves resolving analytic contradictions. Thesis X - and antithesis (not X) form a classic analytic contradiction that resolve themselves through the process of the dialectic to a larger perspective of the world. This activity is strictly within the Kantian Idealist framework - the movement involved is the processes of the empty cogito - and hence firmly Cartesian.Paradox is NOT an analytic contradiction but empirical facts or events that the cogito trips over and must take account of. As such it is NOT purely analytic or Kantian Idealist. This is my understanding as to why Milbank considers Zizek's Hegelianism to be "too conservative and Cartesian".2. The Zizekian "abyss" is the end point of the "Via Negativa" process of Theology, which predates modernism, late-stage-modernism or post-modernism (whatever you want to call it) by centuries but yet is the basic, though unrecognized, program of modernism. The Milbankian conception, for me is closely related to the "Via Positiva".In the Via Negativa, the main activity to show what god is NOT; to separate the sacred from the profane, to prove how things and customs and traditions and people are NOT divine or sacred but in fact their opposite. It casts god out of the world, out of our souls and ultimately the universe itself. God becomes distinct from all things, beings and attributes and becomes "just a word". So the correct attitude of one engaged in Via Negativa when confronted with a painting or music or any art is the iconoclastic one - to deny the religious aspect of such things and in fact to place them in opposition to the sacred or the transcendent. Thus all things become "merely human" and trapped in the concreteness of the pragmatic, finite world - and as such - simply objects of economics for exchange. This impenetrable wall between the secular and the sacred set up and sustained by the Via Negativa marks the world of both the atheist and the fundamentalist. For the atheist, the only thing in the sacred domain is the empty-set - a void - an inexpressible which pragmatically, therefore, does not exist. Similarly for the fundamentalist - since the sacred is inaccessible, the only way the sacred exists is in a concretized and static human artifact form - as words on paper. All three monotheisms have their "sola scriptura" - which rather than identifying god beyond words - in fact codifies and constructs god within the human Lacanian Symbolic realm. That's why atheists and fundamentalists are sometimes both referred to as "a-gnostics".In Via Positiva, there is no separation between the secular and sacred. Here the correct attitude of being human is not commerce but worship. In recognition of our finitude, all things are viewed not as obstacles but as pointers or invitations to the transcendent. Art becomes sacramental rather than an ironic stance. The world and everything in it contains a unseen hook and an invisible line which is long enough to let us wander to the ends of the world, and still to bring us back to the transcendent with a twitch upon the thread.3. For me, its also a simple matter of aesthetics. Zizek advocates that since god is not, but an abyss, an unfathomable void - that only the person qua abyss is truly in the image and likeness of god.Now I'm not opposed to "the abyss" or The Real, or whatnot. In fact I'll pay good money on tickets to see a really good abyss. I'm even dutifully grateful for the freedom that the pure contingency of the abyss gives us.Its just that Zizek's "the Abyss" can only be viewed as the final point of collapse of an exhausted late-stage modernism, having reached its final dialectical and deconstructive omega point. It can go no further - RIP.Conversely, I delight in the green shoots and renewed life of the return of philosophy to theology, Augustinian in particular - to a univocal understanding of the lived-in world. In their rejection of the "supernatural", late-stage modernism has denied us the world as it is and only left us with the "subnatural" - a few mathematical equations here and there - and the abyss.

If you are a Hegelian and like Zizek's work, this volume has your name on it. I loved Zizek's first essay, and liked the second. The Milbank piece is a waste of time, in my opinion, but it serves at least as a good foil for the response essay.Zizek continues a theme in his later texts, like The Puppet and the Dwarf, namely the meaning and significance of Christianity. His approach offers the materialist or atheist an alternative to the mundane crude materialism of Harris and Dawkins. Zizek argues in favor of the internal transcendence that he finds in Hegelian dialectic, and the not-all of Lacan.

I can't believe that the footnotes in this book are NOT linked..... This is very, very, very bad....

SPOILERS AHOY!The Short of It: No connection to characters, no payoff at the end, no explanations about the society, I’ve seen CVS receipts that had a more engaging narrative than this. I do not recommend this series. The Long of It: I wish I could tell you that I read these books out of a profound intellectual curiosity, or that the poetry stirred my soul, but the truth is that there is nothing on TV anymore, so I find myself looking in under every rock for entertainment these days. This is one of those color-by-numbers crapsaccharine worlds where at first everything is super-controlled by an all-knowing government, and everything is beautiful all the time. But then something unexpected happens, and the officials get mean and ugly somehow, and there are a lot more of them. Before you know it they’re giving you bad medicine and you’re being sent off to work camps where you join a rebellion, and in the third book the ultimate battle is fought to change things forever--Don’t forget the love triangle.I can’t even say that’s a gross oversimplification of the plot, because that IS the plot. Now, I don’t mind a recycled plot, or this Milquetoast Dystopia, but what I do care about is not caring. I just didn’t care about any of these characters. I kind of cared about Cassia’s grandfather, and Ky made me angry when he burned that map in Crossed. Other than that, it was like reading dry, impersonal accounts of events, not people telling me about emotional things that happened to them.Ky is my match. I love Ky. This is all you get from the narration. You never feel sadness on her grandfather’s death, anger when the government is taking their things, or fear when something dangerous happens. It’s all this is this and that is that. People blubber when their relatives die. They get mad when you take their stuff. They shake with terror when authorities take them to parts unknown. These characters don’t do any of that, so we don’t empathize with them and we don’t care about them.I would have been interested in what the catalyst was that caused people to decide that they had to get rid of all the “clutter” and make people only have specialized knowledge, and when and how all that went wrong. That’s the only reason I finished the series. A few sentences explaining what happened in the past in between the pining over true love would have been appreciated—give me a megalomaniac hungry for power, or an accident, or perhaps an evening news special with Brian Williams with some alternative facts. Throw me a bone here.I have to be honest about poetry, too. If the future of freedom rests on poetry, the first matchbox that comes along is going to destroy humankind. Milquetoastia only has a hundred poems, a hundred stories, a hundred songs, and so on. Everything else is being purged, and the stuff they’re keeping isn’t exactly accessible to people. For example, the hundred songs are only sung by artificial voices, and are not singable by real people because of how they’re written. Plus, nobody is allowed to create new music. Not that they would find songs that they couldn’t sing very inspirational in the first place.I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that the poetry is the same way—they probably don’t enjoy or understand it much. So when someone in Milquetoastia sees a random new Tennyson poem, they simply won’t have a frame of reference. They won’t have an education to tell them to think about symbolism and how it relates to them other than getting into trouble. This is a huge plot hole.A love of poetry and literature comes from understanding what it is. Milquetoastia doesn’t understand written things—written things are disposable, they’re bad, they’re clutter that can get you into trouble and they’re to be burned. Cassia would never have been affected by poetry like this without a much larger foundation built by someone, like her grandfather, someone who remembered what the words meant and could teach her about symbolism. The quick one-two lessons from Ky wouldn’t have done it. Cassia would have tossed her grandfather’s poems into the incinerator and gone right back into her routine.Matched consists of Cassia wondering which boy is for her, and passing napkins back and forth with Ky. That’s the whole first book. Cassia and Ky spend all of Crossed in a canyon trying to get away from the all-knowing, all-controlling Milquetoastia, only to get to the rebellion, which turns out to be all-knowing and all-controlling. At this point they should have blown both sides sky high and run off to live in Narnia, but nobody is capable of coming up with an original thought, so they just let the rebellion assign them new jobs and off they go to do rebel things. Ky absolutely didn’t want to join the rebellion, but he still does this for reasons that aren’t made clear.Reached adds Xander’s point of view to this mess, although I’m not sure why, since it’s impossible to tell them apart. The bits of pertinent information each character adds could have been worked in some other way without this confusion. In the end, the Pilot reveals that there isn’t any difference between the rebellion and Milquetoastia, so the whole thing was pointless. They find a cure for the Virus and there’s not much of a payoff or answers to anything.Even the identity of the current Pilot was a nothingburger. There’s not even much to mock here. So, unless you are trapped in Milquetoastia and this is the last set of books anywhere, I do not recommend reading this series. I am going to move on to bigger and better things right after I take the red pill.

Actual rating 2.5 stars.Such an amazing concept – the Matched trilogy has hues of ‘The Giver’ and ‘Divergent’ but did not deliver as well as those did. Sad to say, but this series has got to be the lowest rated I’ve read to date. Maybe it’s because it was released at the start of the dystopian craze and marketed towards a tween demographic, leaving me feeling like I’d read it all before and the immature narrative tone felt boring.I didn’t know what to expect going into the series because of such mixed ratings on Goodreads and from my friends, so I took it on faith of Ally Condie’s popularity as an author.I guess the best way I can sum this series up is ‘soft,’ having all the elements to make a great dystopian, but not quite hammering them home for me. The pacing felt slow to start with, though the descriptions of the landscape are inspiring, the story lagged. The poetry elements were also lost on me – I skipped over every one of them. Each book seemed to be an improvement on the last; especially in terms of character development and pacing. Though I can say I was never sure where this story was going to go. No because of predictability, but because of its narrative style. The changing perspectives and what felt like a lack of direction left my interest waning several times. The world-building felt over simplified and at times waffly. There felt like a compulsion from the author to pair all the characters up too. It was too nice for a dystopian series. I wanted more grit, higher stakes for the characters and the world.I supposed ‘stylized’ is the best way to describe the treatment of this trilogy. While it was entertaining, the characters took a while for me to care about, I was frequently bored or frustrated. And ultimately, upon finishing the series, I did not feel satisfied. Book 1 ‘Matched’ dealt with escape; Book 2 ‘Crossed’ with a battle for survival in the wilderness; and ‘Reached’ turned out to be a rebellion… fought in a Lab. It wasn’t cohesive and felt like an author’s first draft. The elements of medical science and technology were really interesting and I would have liked them more in the forefront of the plot (with details – many times the details were skipped over or dumbed down.) As too with the survival aspects – fighting in a war and trekking across inhospitable landscapes. I love these aspects, but wasn’t lead to feel like they were desperate an on the brink of death – which they were.I did like the covers, the simplicity and symbolism. They definitely drew me in. The collection as a whole blended well together aesthetically. Large readable font in the hardback boxed set that I purchased. The cover art definitely lead me to believe there would be a heavier sci-fi element than was represented. So a great premise, but lukewarm delivery for me. Sadly the trilogy took a slow downward slope to disappointment. Not a collection of books I’d recommend. :(

After reading and rereading the Hunger Games and Divergent series a hundred times I was looking for something that would be similar and not a knock off. This series really pull me into the story, made me fall in love with the characters, the world, and time they lived in. I would recommend this to anyone who likes to escape reality, government conspiracies, and loves triangle love stories.

This kindlebook of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives; An All American Road Trip…With Recipes (Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives Book 1) by Guy Fieri and Ann Volkwein include among the following; A1 Diner,Blue Moon Café,recipe for Cap’n Crunch French Toast from the Blue Moon Cafe, Chap’s Pit Beef restaurant, a recipe for the #52 Sub Sandwich, Tick Tock Diner restaurant, recipe for Veal Meatloaf from the Tick Tock Diner, Eveready Diner, recipe for lobster quesadillas from Eveready Diner, recipe for three-cheese macaroni and cheese from Eveready Diner, MoGridder’s restaurant, recipe for beef brisket from MoGridder’s and much more. I admit that it was also an easy decision for me to get this kindlebook as I have seen some of his episodes both from the Grocery Games before and the Diners and Drives tv episodes.

I watch the show so I didn't need to know how great the places Guy visits are. I was disappointed in the recipes he chose to share from those places. He mentions some great dishes but doesn't give the recipes for them. I only found one recipe that I would like to try. I bought this book because I really like one of his other books (which I can't remember the name of, now lost on my dead nook). It had the story of his life, with some fun pictures, and lots of great recipes.

It's a great gift in theory. I purchased this for my husband since we absolutely love the show, and the recipes are okay. They are not things that I would typically cook but they do look delicious on TV. It's a great coffee table book but I can't say we've actually made a recipe from the cookbook.

I liked this book, I loved the show. But being from California I felt that my state was unrepresented. I understand that there is limited space but I felt that out of all the great places that the show covered in Cali far too few made it into this book, yet there were reviews of places that I will mostly likely never go. but that's really just me.

Pretty interesting, but light on recipes that I would personally make. I bought it at a discount and don't regret the purchase but would have been disappointed if I had payed full price

Not happy at all with this book. Purchased it for a 6,000 mile trip across America and couldn't use it once! Full of a bunch of useless information. So if you're looking for a book as a travel guide for good places to go, this is not it!!!

I watch triple d all the time and was excited to see the books come out. I was expecting recipes for the main courses they were showing and know that some are trade secrets and they don't like to give that out, however the recipes that are in these books I would not even order in the restaurants much less give them a try at home. Very disappointed.

FUN! FUN and more FUN.....makes tracking down some of his favorite stops easy....also some delicious ideas for meals. Look forward to reading others written by Guy.

Now, there is the intensity I was missing from Dare You To! Crash Into You hooked me from the very beginning and never let me go. I've really enjoyed Isaiah in the previous books, so I was eager to get to know him better. Rachel is a new addition and I came to like her a lot, too. But what I loved was the plot. It wasn't as emotional as Pushing the Limits, but the intensity comes from the suspenseful plot. I know absolutely nothing about cars. In fact, I can't even drive. But I love the Fast and the Furious movies, so I ended up loving the gritty drag racing plot, especially as Rachel and Isaiah scramble to raise enough money to pay a debt owed to a very dangerous person. In Crash Into You, we meet Rachel Young, who may seem like the typical rich, private school girl on the surface, but she's not all. And I'm not just referring to her obsession with cars and addiction to speeding down back roads. She suffers from severe anxiety. Not just panic attacks, but severe panic attacks that sometimes cause her to throw up blood. It's bad, but she tries to hide it for her family's sake. Her problems don't just end there. Rachel's mom treats her as a replacement to her dead daughter, Colleen. Rachel hasn't even met Colleen but she's expected to speak at benefits about her (which triggers those panic attacks) and to fill the void in her mother's life. I really liked this unique "issue." It was interesting to see how a person's grief can affect those around them. Rachel isn't the only one in her family struggling either, her brothers and her father all tip-toe around their mom/wife.Of course, Isaiah and Rachel meet at a race, which ends terribly and not just because Rachel loses. The man, Eric, who runs the show gets robbed by the guys who brought Rachel, and now he's after her for the money. Isaiah offers to take on her debt, but she still insists on helping. Naturally the two grow close as they work on cars and do more legit races to earn the cash. Obviously, they have some set backs and that just upped the tension. I assumed Crash Into You would have a happy ending, but I wasn't sure what the author would put her characters through to get there. That ending...woah! I almost cried. Well, I started to cry and then reigned myself in. I didn't see that one coming.Crash Into You is easily the best of this series so far! I loved the characters, loved the plot, loved that crazy ending! The only thing I didn't love was Beth. There was too much of her, and I was already sick of her in her own book. It also seems like she took several steps back from where she was at the end of Dare You To. I did like how we were introduced to a lot of new and interesting characters. I quite liked Abby and I really hope we see more of her, or that she gets her own book! The next book is about one of Rachel's many brothers, so I'm excited to see how he finds his true love.*Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher through NetGalley for review. No compensation was offered or accepted.

Rachel Young is privileged and well loved by her family, but there is an emptiness as well. Rachel has secrets and one is racing her car around with a need for speed. She happens about a street race and Isaiah Walker is the complete opposite of Rachel and for some reason he tries to warn her to stay away. It doesn't take long before Rachel and Isaiah are falling for one another but one moment can change everything, will they be able to survive when it does?Fascinating story, I was a surprised by this one. I liked both characters but Isaiah was intriguing. I found the dynamic between the characters and how the story unfolded spot on. I will go back to read the rest of the series, had characters I want to learn more about. If your looking for a book that is different, pick this one up.

My full-on glom of this YA series continues. This third installment focuses on Isaiah, who is about to age out of the foster care system. (Readers of prior books in the series will know Isaiah as the best friend of book one's hero, Noah, and the boy who was in unrequited love with book two's heroine, Beth.) Needing to come up with rent money, Isaiah enters his Mustang in an illegal street race, where he meets Rachel. Rachel is the precious daughter of one of Louisville's most privileged families, but when she can sneak out from under the parents' and brothers' overprotective thumbs, she likes to race. She winds up at the street race more or less by accident, because Plot. When things at the race go sideways, Rachel and Isaiah end up indebted to a scary crime boss who will hurt/rape/kill them if they don't pay him back. (Also because Plot.) This makes them unlikely allies, who eventually become unlikely lovers. (Well, unlikely heavy petters, anyway -- this is YA.)I was fond enough of Isaiah from the previous books to be excited to read his story, and mostly this didn't disappoint, though this whole series is a little angsty for my tastes. (Again, it is YA.) I thought Rachel's backstory was interesting and well done. (There are only so many ways you can make a "poor little rich girl" a sympathetic figure, and McGarry did well in taking an unexpected route.)I really disliked the ending, which was abrupt and rather of the deus ex machina variety, but otherwise this book was fun. On to the next!

Crash into You gave me those same wonderful feelings that I had when I read Pushing the Limits and Breaking the Rules. I have always had a soft spot for Isaiah, especially considering how much he supported Noah and Echo, so I was excited to finally sit down and start his story. It didn’t take long for him to steal my heart. His pain over his mother abandoning him and his anger over his fallout with Beth were both palpable. Isaiah was definitely rough and tough, but he also had a good heart. I loved his brotherly relationship with Noah and the way he cared about Echo. What I appreciated the most about Isaiah was his loyalty. When someone is important to him, he will do anything for that person. His tenderness and protectiveness of Rachel were so endearing. I wanted nothing more than to see him find someone who would never leave him.Rachel was the complete opposite of Isaiah, except for her passion for cars. Her family situation made me sad and angry. She kept many secrets, and I had a difficulty understanding how her parents could be so oblivious to her pain. Her entire family saw her as weak, but Isaiah saw the real Rachel: strong and determined. The pair had the perfect combination of sweetness yet undeniable chemistry. Even though their home lives were dramatically different, they unfortunately had much in common in terms of suffering and feeling alone. In addition to the great romance that developed between Isaiah and Rachel, this story had elements of danger and suspense that definitely heightened my reading experience. I love the emotional journeys that Katie McGarry always take me on, and I am looking forward to reading West’s book next.
