I've been searching for this type of m/m book for the longest time, and FINALLY found it. It had everything I was looking for: a Renaissance feel with sword fights, a handsome King and a snarky young man who banter constantly, and of course the castles and taverns. The story was beautifully written and very easy to become absorbed in. Right from the start, I fell for Brandon (the clever and sarcastic young man with a questionable past) and I also fell for Alistair (the young King who just wants to be treated like everyone else.)Unlike a lot of m/m books that have sex scene after sex scene in great detail (that gets old after a while, and I avoid certain authors now because of it), this story's love scenes were tasteful and served a purpose to the actual story, and not just for smut purposes. Nicky James has become an auto-buy author for me just from reading this book alone, and I can't wait for the next book!I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a wonderful love story.
This story is well written, full of macho alpha strong men, and swoon worthy kissing that is fit for a king. If you enjoy reading a story where Knights of the Round Table meets forbidden love, then this tale is for you.
I couldn't stop reading once I started! The characters are compelling. It's impossible to not love them. Go and read.
Kings... castle guards... sword fights...I've never been a fan of medieval times-themed stories. In fact, if I hadn't been asked to review this book, I probably wouldn't have read it. However, that would depriving myself of an awesome piece of literature.I didn't even make it half-way through the first chapter before I was caught up in this tale told in first-person. As I read more and more of the story I was able to actually picture the settings and the characters as they interacted with each other. As I read about the situations Alistair and Brandon find themselves in, I can't help but wonder what I would do in their places.How would I deal with the smart-assed Brandon? Would I have the courage to do what Alistair does in the end? Would I be brave enough to follow my heart, consequences be damned, when my brain tells me it's wrong? That's how easy it is to get caught up with these two masterfully-written characters.I also like the fact that the sex scenes in this story aren't the typical blow-by-blow gratuitous wham-bam-thank-you-sam encounters. That gets really old really fast. There's more to being a gay couple than the bedroom. Gay people lead real lives. What sex scenes there are in this story are nicely written in order to give the reader a feel of tenderness between Alistair and Brandon.Would I read Something From Nothing again? Absolutely! Will I read the next book in the Tales from Edovia series, Buried Truths? Hell to the Yeah!If you haven't read either of these novels, I strongly encourage you to do so. You won't be disappointed. Alistair is in need of soldiers, and when a street rat tries to join his ranks he knows that no matter how good the street rat may be at wielding a sword, it still won't help people look past what he is or where he livesBrandon has always wanted to be a soldier, and when the opportunity to join the King's army presents itself he knows he is the best out there, but when you don't have the right background, does that mean that no matter how hard you work, things will never work out? Brandon has to fight past not only other men, but the preconceived ideas people have, once he proves himself he still has the toughest battle yet to fight - the fight for his love and the fight for his life.Something from Nothing is a GFY story, not only do we get to see new love blossom, but we also get to see two people fight for what they believe, and are willing to give up their lives rather than their love for one another.Nicky James hit it out of the ballpark with SfN, I love it when a book allows me to fall in love with the characters. When I feel their pain, their love, and their fears....what else can I say, it takes tremendous courage to put a part of yourself out for the world to judge and I for one am so glad that Nicky took that leap and shared Brandon and Alistair with me (and all readers).Brandon and Alistair are characters that will stick with me, and I'm so happy that they will.
