I found Immigration: Examining the Facts in my local library, and I'm am ecstatic to have picked it up!The book is sorted into various categories (such as 'unauthorized immigration, refugees, and asylees,' 'immigration and children,' and 'immigration and the US-Mexico border'), and each category tackles things you hear phrased as a question/answer dialogue. For example, the 'assimilation, education, and social programs' category has the following subheadings: (Q18) Do immigrants to the United States generally make an effort to assimilate and learn english? (Q19) Do immigrants comprise the least educated group of people living in the United States? (Q20) Do all immigrants come to the United States because they want to experience the "American dream"? For each of those questions - and every other question throughout the book - there is a short answer (usually a sentence or two that gets right to the point), and well as a longer, more in-depth explanation of the evidence that backs up the short answer. The explanations are detailed, take pains to be as objective as possible, and refer to credible, peer-reviewed research where that research has been conducted and published. They are also thoroughly and clearly cited (in text at the end of sentences and with an alphabetized full list of citations at the end of question's section), so intrepid readers can find and read the source materials if they so choose.I don't think text on a screen can really do justice to how thrilled I am with this book. The writing was aimed at a general audience, but the format was essentially that of an academic paper: clear and as concise as fair treatment of the topic would allow, a dissemination of facts in response to specific inquiries, and with clearly cited academic research being referred to where possible. Immigration: Examining the Facts took all the bluster and rhetoric out of the 'immigration issue,' providing solid information and a respite from all the bluster and overblown rhetoric that surrounds it.I love this book. In the week that I've had it I've already recommended it to one person and am highly likely to recommend it to others. I have also searched out other books from the Contemporary Debate series and - because I want to annotate the books - purchased them. The books are expensive - between $40 and $60 each for a new hardcover, all that's available at this time - but I firmly believe that they are worth it. We most certainly need more fact-based policy and discourse in America, and books like this will help me become a well-informed citizen who can participate and advocate for it.
