An excellent introduction to Plato's philosophy. If you're interested in the historical figure of Socrates, these dialogues are most are most concerned with his life.Philosophically, these "Five Dialogues"--Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, Meno, Phaedo--along with Phaedrus, Symposium and the Republic form the bulk of Plato's thought on Forms and the soul. This is a great place to start. The Euthyphro is a typical early dialogue and sets the stage for the charges that face later Socrates in the Apology. Both are very readable. Crito and Phaedo show Socrates in prison accepting his fate with poise and refusing to escape. They are also the most vivid explanation of the immortality of the soul. Meno is a middle dialogue that poses important problems of knowledge and learning resolved by the theory of Forms and Recollection. It's also the most difficult and rewarding of the bunch. This Hackett edition is nice but not great. The dialogues are the Grube translation, edited by Cooper. The introduction by Grube is rather short and just explains the logic behind the grouping of the five dialogues, which is disappointing compared to other Hackett's. However, the translation is good, if a bit literal. There are explanatory footnotes for all of Socrates' idioms and historical references. The margins and book design are nice and readable for such a compact book. The main advantage this little 8x5 paperback has is that it's cheap, easy to carry, and perfect for writing in. I feel the same way about the other excellent Hackett editions of "Symposium", "Phaedrus", and "Laches and Charmides". Now that my interest in Plato has solidified, I will likely invest in the Hardcover collection "Plato: Complete Works". However, you will miss out on the introductions found in the individual Hackett's, in particular Symposium's and Phaedrus which are fantastic.

I got this for my intro to philosophy class. It does contain all 5 dialogues and as a bonus has an intro to each dialogue to provide context about that dialogue. However the wording was off compared to my classmates books. Additionally it did not have the line numbers or section number for Apology and Euthyphro (the two sections I had to read for class).I feel that it better to buy a different version, the one I got to replace this was https://amzn.to/2KHethe.This version of five dialogues might be a good addition to other versions however it cannot be used by itself.

This Walter Black publication of Plato's most popular dialogues dates from 1942, is bound in linen like cloth with a bit of gilt on the spine, and is nicely sized at just over 5 x7". The translation is by the noted Oxford scholar B. Jowett with an interesting intro by Louise Ropes Loomis. For many this is all the Plato they'll need either as a supplemental text for a lower division Greek history class or a more rigorous survey of philosophy in the ancient world. Given that used/like new or VG copies are readily available for a small sum of money it makes a nice alternative to the ubiquitous paperback editions more commonly purchased for academic purposes. The quality of the binding makes it a nice permanent addition to the bookshelf as well.If your taste for Socrates' prized student runs a little deeper I would highly recommend a new edition of "complete works" edited by John M. Cooper and published by Hackett. The collection draws upon many different translations so it might be a little more demanding to work through, but to have all Plato's work in a single volume is a benefit not to be ignored.

I am giving these translations 5 stars. They are the translations I learned from. I bought a paperback copy years ago. I now decided to buy a kindle copy for convenience. I was unhappy to find that, at least in the case of the Meno, the numerous explanatory notes in the paperback version were omitted from the kindle version. Bad! However, the notes were included in the case of the Euthyphro, so maybe it was carelessness rather than a deliberate policy in the case of the Meno.

Purchased for a vegan who only eats food she has prepared. Works full time and shops and meal preps once or twice a week. These recipes are perfect for her because she can put a healthy meal on the table quickly after work. As a 60 year old carnivore, I've been served many of the meals from this book and I gotta say I could be converted.

This was a gift for my vegan friend who expressed to me that she was hungry for comfort food. Voila this book came through. Funny I ordered it before she made the comment so was surprised when she mentioned comfort food.

I have made several of the recipes in this cookbook and they are a godsend on a busy evening.

A perfect carpentry book for any girl or boy. My kids, who are now in their late twenties and early thirties, loved this book. It was their most checked-out library book and we made many of the projects. Now that I have a 5-year-old grandson and a three-year-old granddaughter I looked for a copy for them and was thrilled to find one in pristine condition. My grandson received this for his 5th birthday along with a tool box with real tools from Harbor Freight and a gift card for Home Depot. He loves to look at the projects and is planning to make the raft this summer (with Daddy's help). He also has made the dolly cradle for his sister. All instructions are easy to follow and cover several pages so each step is broken down into easy parts. The book is divided into levels of projects so you can help a child choose a small faster project or a larger week-long project. Materials lists and tool lists are included. The projects are shown being built by three boys and one girl with tons of photos. It's delightful to think that these young children are now all adults with kids of their own probably building projects still. Excellent book and I am very pleased with it.

I have thoroughly enjoyed using this book to make projects with my kids. My knowledge of using tools was pretty much limited to being able to hammer a nail into the wall to hang a picture. Actually building something seemed very complicated and reserved for people who were not me. My attitude has completely changed now thanks to this book. The instructions are described in a clear simple way; the tools needed, how to use the tools, everything is outlined for the reader. My children understood everything they were doing. I understood everything I was supervising them doing! "Carpentry for Children" has brought a love for carpentry into my family, given us many fond memories and helped us build fun projects!

Super fun maker book. So important for kids to get hands-on real world experience. Both my son (5th grade) and my daughter (3rd) grade built something and are very proud

Nice book. I would guess it was written in the 1970's from the wording and the pictures. The kids at our school got a lot out of it, but made fun of the haircuts and closes the kids wore. Gave good basic info on wood working.

I really like that I can just put this book out on the tool bench and let my kids go for it, it is so easy to understand and the projects are fun and and absolute must for every boy/ or girl from the age of 8.

This book offers projects for a range of skill levels, from simple toys on up through a lemonade stand cut from a whole sheet of plywood. Different projects suit different levels of skill and strength - cutting some of those pieces with a hand saw will take a while. There's a lot to like here. It starts with an introduction to basic hand tools, including short lessons on using each one. The list includes a brace and bit, the classic hand drill (not the egg-beater kind). I agree completely with this 1985 book in recommending that to a kid but, since this book came out, it verges on extinction as cordless drills encroach on its former habitat. This book distinguishes itself in offering kids larger-scale projects than other books, starting with the very first: the workbench on which the rest will be made. Perhaps the floating toys represent the range best. A little wooden tugboat, suitable as a bathtub toy, lies at the small end of the scale. At the other end, a real raft (holds one or two kids) requires several five-foot logs, eight inches in diameter. Other projects, including a few with girl appeal, lie between those extremes.Walker makes sure there's fun in the finished work, too, not just in the making. An easel, a puppet theater, and a gravity race car all promise years of fun (and maybe a few good healthy bruises). Although the scale of some projects might be a bit much for smaller carpenters and living spaces, the range offers something for many skill levels, and offers the beginner a lot to look forward to. Not every project will work for every kid, but it looks like a lot of fun.-- wiredweird

Great diagrams and instructions for the kids to experiment with something new.

#361,674 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I used the Bradt guide during my recent trip to Ethiopia and the print guide is invaluable because internet resources on Ethiopia travel are frankly pretty lacking. The only alternative is Lonely Planet but I never recommend LP except as a last resort if no other guides are out there. The history and culture section was comprehensive enough to get a feel for the background of a lot of the historic sites (Lalibela's rock churches, Gonder's castles, etc.) and understand everything from the love of injera to the different annoyances in each specific location. It is truly comprehensive so even though I had enough information on major tourist points I visited such as Axum and Bahir Dar as a do-it-myself traveler, the guide does detail numerous smaller towns and cities and on-the-road points of interest, so think of it as an investment for multiple trips. The final thing I love about the guide is the honesty about the challenges of traveling in Ethiopia, down to bringing a flashlight to Addis airport if you need to claim a lost bag or young kids sometimes pelting you with stones. That sort of information is probably the most important in mentally preparing to visit.

I am used to the lonely planet so the format has taken some getting used it. It is by far the most recent of the guides for Ethiopia. Also very helpful there is a blog for updates to the book and I have seen the author chime in on message boards when certain aspects have been mentioned as changing. I really like the idea a person is dedicated to keeping this guide updated and useful not just a staff writer passing through for a bit and moving on.

I travel to Ethiopia frequently and I often stay for months. I know the county well, but I always use Brigg's Ethiopia guides as a reference while in-country for hotels, restaurants, travel methods, language issues, health matters, cultural matters, and other helpful information. This new 2015 edition of the Ethiopia Bradt Travel Guide by Philip Briggs is the best travel guide available for Ethiopia. I have compared.

Just used this on a 23-day trip to Ethiopia. The background history, political, art and music sections are great. Especially loved the recommendations in the music section. Used it in the north and south of Ethiopia for numerous sites with great success. Compared it to other guide books other travelers had on the trip (Lonely Planet, etc.) and this one seemed the best. Be sure to get the latest version published in December of 2015.

This is the most thorough travel guide I have ever read. The book is big and somewhat heavy so I bought the Kindle version to take on my trip. The historical section is excellent. This is a real plus as it is so hard to get really good historical coverage of Ethiopia. It also gives you a great deal of information that will help you navigate and understand the country of culture of Ethiopia. A great deal of work and research went into producing this guide and it shows in how well it is put together and how thoroughly things are covered.

This is a great guide for many reasons. John Grinling's section on music is essential and enjoyable. Overall, the entire guide belies Briggs' deep respect, fascination and understanding for this incredibly dense and unique subject. From food to history to the current population... you get huge insights here, much moreso than any other guide book that I've ever seen, actually.

I travel in Ethiopia. This guide seems to give the best balance of price and useful information

Excellent guide book. Easy to read and so much pertinent information. This book never left my side during my trip and I could not have made my plans without the help of this book.

Here we have Freud showing off his bag of jokes; the man had an odd taste, even for 1905 (?). He goes about explaining the joke-techniques, motives and… well, the amusing thing is that he dared to explain all this crap to us. Unbelievable, Freud! :-)

Reading Freud from this book is to read him anew and leave out all the "wild psychoanalysis" psychobabble.

Man, Freud was a wordy bastard.

Excellent thanks so much have been looking for this book for a long time. Thanks again

Pages were falling out!

A great admirer of Freud recommended this book to me as perhaps the best of his many writings. Thus, my expectations were high and, perhaps because of that, I ended up a bit disappointed.Freud analyzes the nature of humor, and specifically of jokes. Not surprisingly to those who know his other work, he finds that jokes work by releasing tension in the subconscious.Freud argues cohesively and pursuasively - if one is prepared to follow his rather lengthy arguments. His examples are often the easier part of the reading and these are interesting and sometimes funny, although truth be told, it was mostly interesting to discover how lame many of the jokes are that in 19th century apparently were considered hilarious. In the end, I found this reading interesting but not more than that, and did not come away with any particular new insights or ideas. For the afficianado this book is certainly a must. For the more peripherally interested, it would probably not be the first choice.

I don't know how many times I turn to this essay. It's not his most important work but it can be a very essential piece of academic literature.

The best.

Almost 36,000 reviews and 86 percent are five stars. What's THAT about, I thought. So I read the book, and now I know what the raves are all about. This book is one of the best, if not the best book I have ever read. Hannah writes like an angel. The book isn't a fast read, at least not for me, because I would go back and reread a sentence just to enjoy the mastery with which it was written. Hannah's style doesn't try to be high literature, but the result is. She writes beautiful scenery and background, but not so much as many authors do. Her characters, well, I felt like I knew them, like old friends, not without flaws, but perfectly developed. So I add my five-star review to the others. Read this book. It will take you away from whatever you're doing. This was my first book from Kristin Hannah. It won't be my last

I very much enjoyed Kristin Hannah character development and story. This book is written better than many books about WWII. The reader experiences the struggles and fear of those living in a Nazi occupied country. I am very, very troubled however. When I read about Isabelle organizing an escape route for airmen whose planes were shot down in France and then escorting them safely to Spain with the assistance of reluctant Basque, I had to stop because I clearly remembered reading this before. I vaguely also remember a black white movie or documentary about this. I searched and found the once read story of the Belgium, Andree de Jongh who actually did what the fictional character Isabelle did in the novel. Much, much, much of the book parallels de Jongh's true story - the description of the heroine; the number of people (118 by de Jongh and 117 by Isabelle) escorted through this escape route: this escape route having a code name (Nightingale in the book and Comet in real life); the description of the airmen's instructions on the train and staying behind the heroine when they walked in German occupied cities; de Jongh's/Isabelle father executed by firing squad; the reaction of the airmen to this female who was going to be the one who to lead them out of France; de Jongh's/Isabelle's invisibility to the Germans because she was "just" a woman: collaborating with the British to fund the escape of airmen from France; de Jongh's/Isabelle's capture in the Pyrenees by the Nazi's then interrogation and Nazi's disbelief and rejection of the idea that a woman was capable of doing this; and de Jongh's/Isabelle's imprisonment in Ravensbruck women's concentration camp. Why am I troubled? I searched the book, several interviews with the author and Ms. Hannah website and there was no mention of specific name "Andree de Jongh." Hannah acknowledged on her website that her search led her to "a story of a young Belgian woman who created an escape route out of Nazi occupied France." I strongly believe that the author should have dedicated, credited or acknowledge the name of Andree de Jongh in the book where it was easily visible to the reader. de Jongh is as invisible to the author as she was to the Germans and in a book that celebrated the bravery of women during war. Was Vianne's character based on a brave woman who also deserved bold recognition? This makes me sad.

This isn't just chick lit or young adult, it's BAD chick lit and young adult. I've read extensively about this era, nonfiction and also fiction, some great (All the Light We Cannot See, Winds of War & War and Remembrance) and some not so great but perfectly passable. I'm no book snob. Not so far into this I was in disbelief that it was a bestseller and written by an educated person. Every single character is a ridiculous cliche (the brooding but hunky Nazi, the mysterious French underground smuggler woman with a cigarette holder, the impetuous and impossibly beautiful heroine, on and on). I had to come to these one star reviews to feel sane and not alone.

The Nightingale opens with this amazing first line:“If I have learned anything in this long life of mine, it is this: In love we find out who we want to be; in war we find out who we are.” - pg 1This story is about what it’s like to be a woman during war. The author says on her website that “In war, women’s stories are all too often forgotten or overlooked.” I had never thought about how true that really was until I read this book. Vianne and Isabelle are two sisters that we follow through World War II. One stays home and takes care of her kids and one helps in the war effort. Their story showed me that this statement is not true:“And it’s a fact that women are useless in war. Your job is to wait for our return.” - pg 26What a beautiful reminder not overlook women and their strength. Even as a woman, I'm guilty of doing that sometimes.Since this is an historical-fiction story, I felt like there should have been an afterword talking about what was historical and what wasn’t. But don’t worry I’ve googled it all for you :) The Nightingale is inspired by a real person, Andree de Jongh. Don’t go read her biography before reading this book unless you want to be spoiled. Andree de Jongh and her corresponding character in the book were themselves inspired by a real nurse named Edith Cavell who served during World War I. You should read about her too :)I love pictures and the author has some beautiful pictures of places that inspired the locations in her book.I’m a geek for any reference to art or culture, so when I saw a reference to “drab-eyed, dark-clothed people who looked like they belonged in an Edvard Munch painting.” (pg 239) I had to look it up. He’s most famous for doing The Scream. You’ll love the writing in this book. It’s beautiful. I highlighted so many good quotes that I can’t share them all. This might be my favorite one:“Lately, though, I find myself thinking about the war and my past, about the people I lost. Lost. it makes it sound as if I misplaced my loved ones;” - pg 1The Nightingale deserves all the hype and awards it's gotten. You should read it.

Who Is the Dalai Lama?   February 22, 1940, was a busy day at the Potala, a grand, thousand-room palace high in the mountains of Tibet. Early in the morning, guests started to fill the main assembly hall. They were waiting for their leader to arrive.   Once the hall was full, the crowd grew quiet. A little boy, dressed in golden robes, entered. Horn and trumpet blasts greeted him. He crossed the room on a white carpet that had been rolled out especially for him to a jeweled throne. It was called the Lion Throne because of the eight lions carved into the wooden base of the tall, cushioned chair. The throne was the seat of the Dalai Lama (say: DAHL-eye LAH-muh), a name given to the political and religious leader of the country of Tibet.   The young Dalai Lama needed some help climbing up the steps to his throne. He sat cross-legged on the seat and watched the ceremonies, dances, and readings. Many gifts were set out for the boy—a music box, the tusk of an elephant, expensive fabrics, parakeets, a tricycle, and even a brick of gold! Holy men, government officials, and the others in attendance, in a sign of respect, bowed so low before him that they were lying on the floor. “I found that funny,” he later said. The Dalai Lama is known for his sense of humor. But it was especially funny to him that the adults were acting this way. After all, he was only four years old!   As he grew, that young boy on the Lion Throne began to understand why that day was so special. As Tibet’s Fourteenth Dalai Lama, he would face joyful times and difficult times. He would grow in wisdom. And he would become caring and strong.   But on his enthronement day, he had no idea what lay ahead for himself and for the people of Tibet. Along with the many gifts the little boy received, he also held an adventurous future in his hands.     Chapter 1: Little Lhamo     Diki Tsering woke very early on July 6, 1935. She went out behind her mud-and-stone house in Taktser, Tibet, to the barn. There, among the animals, she gave birth to her son Lhamo (say: LAM-oh). He didn’t cry. His eyes were open wide. Lhamo’s mother, Diki, and father, Choekyong Tsering, already had four children—their daughter, Dolma, and three sons named Norbu, Gyalo, and Lobsang. There wasn’t much furniture in their six-room house. The children didn’t have their own beds. The family mostly gathered in the kitchen, especially during cold Tibetan winters, to keep warm by the fire. They practiced Tibetan Buddhism, a religion that was very important to them and to all Tibetans. So their house also had a prayer room, where the family left offerings of food and flowers at a small altar.   Taktser, a small village in the northeastern province of Amdo, was on a hill with a view of a wide valley. The land and the weather weren’t good for farming, but families, including Lhamo’s, still tried their best to grow crops.   His family grew barley, buckwheat, and potatoes. Before Lhamo was born, the village suffered from a long drought. No rain had fallen in years, and hail had destroyed the plants in the fields. Many villagers were starving.   Once Lhamo could walk, he followed his mother around the farm as she did her chores. He held the bowl as she milked the dzomos (say: ZHO-mohs)—animals that are a cross between yaks and cows. Little Lhamo was playful. When his mother carried him on her shoulders, he pulled at her ears to show her which way to go. When she sent him to gather eggs from the chickens, she discovered him clucking and sitting with the hens in their nests.   The Tsering family farm also had yaks, sheep, goats, and horses. Lhamo’s father especially loved the horses. But he was often angry and harsh with his children. Lhamo’s mother, on the other hand, was gentle and kind. Lhamo later said, “My first teacher of compassion was my mother.” Compassion means wanting to help someone who is suffering, hurt, or in trouble. Lhamo saw compassion in the way his mother treated him and the way she shared what she could with the needy people in their village.   One of Lhamo’s favorite games was to pack up his clothes and pretend to go on trips. He straddled the windowsill, pretending to ride a horse. His mother asked him where he was going. He said he was headed to Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet.   Lhamo didn’t know that more than a thousand miles away, in Lhasa, something important was happening. In December 1933, the Thirteenth Dalai Lama had died. So Tibet had been without a leader for two years. Government officials and religious leaders had started the search to find the next Dalai Lama.
