Because there's no FORMULA for it, and any characters you create by using a formula will invariably come across as such.So what's the trick? Where's the shortcut?Well, kid, there isn't one. It's all about hard work. Luckily, Rogan gives plenty of tips on how to do that work and make it fun while you're at it.Though some of the advice is fairly standard (raiding your evening news broadcast or paper, if it still exists, for story ideas), Rogan takes it a step further and explains exactly how you can translate a snippet from the news into a full-length feature film, complete with compelling characters. Wow, I am so glad I read this book. All I have to say is this: if, like me, you've read tons of books on how to create great characters, you've wasted a lot of money and time, when all you needed was this one. However, if you've never purchased a how-to book on characters, you're in luck, because this is the only reference you will ever need. I promise. It's that good. Get it, read it, do the exercises, and tell all your writer friends about it. Better yet, don't tell them, then you can have all these secrets to yourself and your friends will be begging you to tell them how you sold that script. Hmm... did I just tell you to buy this book? No, I didn't mean that. Don't buy this book. Really. *evil grin*

This is just what I was needing. I have completed a screenplay and have made a few rewrites, but I have been getting reviews concerning a character that I haven't been able to get a handle on. I have read screenwriting books to improve, but this book cuts through all of the complicated theory that I was hung up on.I have been looking for no nonsense instructions on how to improve my character. After reading this I have been able to understand how to make my other characters come to life, and I am now in another re-write to make it all happen. After this rewrite I will solicit more reviews and, I am sure, my character will not be part of the 'needs work' area. I'm glad I found this book. Thanks a lot.

Bee helpful in how to give your characters unique traits, motivation and depth. Michael Rogan makes fleshing out your characters fun and gives clever tips to enhance your story through character. Good read.

The book is very well written, clear and to the point. It is short but every word counts. The exercises at the end of the chapters are extremely helpful. I can't believe how much money and time I've wasted on long and bulky screenwriting books with very little useful information. I highly recommend this book and others from the writer. Five stars.

There are alot of helpful things that can only make your script better because the exercise s he gives will help you actualize the script you having swimming within you.

I wasn't sure this little book was for me as I don't write scripts, but it's great for all types of fiction writing. I found the exercises after each chapter to be particularly helpful, especially the empathy map. If you are trying to create characters readers will relate to, like and find interesting, try this book.

I bought this book on a whim and had no idea it was so popular -- which, of course, doesn't necessarily mean it's good. But "The Guerney Literary and Potato Peel Society", in my view, deserves all the acclaim it has received. The correspondence between the characters, mostly in Britain and in the island of Guernsey, creates the whole story. The characters are well built, solid and consistent (and in some cases quite charming), and the narrative style flows very well. The wealth of information about how the Nazi occupation of Guernsey during World War II happened is amazing, and quite shocking. Yes, there is the backdrop of a love story going on, but in my view the narrative style and the historical facts make this an outstanding work. I was sorry it finished so quickly!

I forgot how much fun it is to read good, old-fashioned correspondence. These letters, especially the ones written by the central character, are jaunty, naughty, full of personality and spunk. Her response to a dinner invitation, for example, is “Yes, dinner with pleasure. I’ll wear my new dress and eat like a pig.”Pigs end up playing a major role in this wonderful little book when the author connects with some villagers on Guernsey Island, who have recently emerged from German occupation during World War II. She learns how they outsmarted the Germans, who were fussy over farm animals, according to one explanation of how The Guernsey Literary Society came about in the first place. Spoiler alert: it was because of pigs.Their mischievous pig roast compelled them to keep up appearances as the literary society they indeed were not. Yet, as one of the inciters of the pig roast writes, “Once two members read the same book, they could argue, which was our great delight.” Their original naughtiness eventually morphed into a sweet band of friends who “read books, talked books, argued over books, and became dearer and dearer to one another.”The characters are vivid and easy to love, like the characters in Foyle’s War and 84 Charring Cross Road, carrying on despite the undertow of war rumbling beneath them. The writing delighted me, because so much of it made the familiar, ordinary things of life fresh and beautiful and fun (like when the author confesses really like to leave London to live on Guernsey instead). She writes, “The only thing I’d truly miss about London are Sidney and Susan, the nearness to Scotland, new plays, and Harrods Food Hall.” Refreshing: a little bit naughty, a little bit spice. My favorite line in the whole book is her contention that, “Reading good books ruins you for enjoying bad books.”I consider it a compliment to say that this was such a good book, it may have ruined me for whatever one’s next!

Heaps of reviews so not much I can add here...but....Lucky me, I got to read it while visiting Guernsey!Was this book worth the Kindle Price? $8.63 USD. Yup, absolutely!Is it a page turner? Yes.Did I want to be reading this book when I wasn't reading this book? Yes.Did I learn anything from this book?Yes, loved all the information so subtly provided about the German occupation. It's like a history book without the boring bits.Did I think about this book after I was finished reading.Yes, it has stayed with me. It's been a month since I put it down but I still do think of it. Luckily, I was able to get a fridge magnet of the book cover while in Guernsey.My only negative comment - now this may sound petty as I really did enjoy all the books and all the characters! But I did notice they all have the same voice. We don't all write letters in the same style and this was not reflected in the book. All the letters were written in the same particular witty style. Made for good fun reading but I did find that a bit strange as like I said, we do all write differently!

I really wanted to love this book, but it was just "ok" for me. I did not enjoy the format of it, although many would not really care about that aspect. It is written as correspondence between many characters. I did really enjoy the characters, though, and did not have any difficulty following the story. However, I really wish there was a bit more discussion of Juliet and Dawsey's relationship. It just seemed to come out of the blue, with no real excitement leading up to it. I didn't get much satisfaction out of it, for that reason. It was a very cute book, though, and I love a book about books and reading. Very well-written. I will definitely watch the Netflix adaptation - I have a feeling this is going to be one of those instances where I like the movie better than the book, and those times are rare.

About the Author

Oliver Winterbotton spent his whole career designing cars, and, for a short period, boats. He started his working life as an engineering apprentice at Jaguar Cars before spending a further five years there as a staff designer. In 1971 he joined Lotus Cars as the Design Manager. He was responsible for the styling, body engineering and aerodynamics of their vehicles until 1975 when he transferred to Colin Chapman's luxury boat company. A short period of self employment saw the start of the TVR Tasmin range of sports cars. He then moved north to join the company through to the launch of the Tasmin Convertible and 2 + 2. In 1980 he returned to Lotus to lead the joint sports car project with Lotus and Toyota. After the completion of a prototype running vehicle he left for a short period in Detroit, USA. Working for General Motors he was a project manager on two low volume vehicles for them. Returning to the UK he rejoined Lotus where he held a number of senior management positions in engineering and vehicle safety work. He resigned in 1998 and set up a consultancy, Norfolk Automotive Limited. His clients included a number of companies in China until he retired. Throughout his career he maintained a "hands on" approach to both the design and the development of a wide range of products. Retired since 2009, he now lives in a modest self-designed house in Norfolk, UK.

Cool book for an industrial design school drop out, car freak and TVR Wedge owner like me. Interesting account of a fascinating career from such a humble point of view.

Excellent read.

As the title says, covers the career of Oliver Winterbottom's experiences, both the ups and downs, in designing cars for many manufacturers. I am a long time Lotus owner and so I was mostly interested in his stories about Lotus and dealing with Colin Chapman. The author's candor about dealing with Chapman and others was insightful. About half the book was dedicated to Lotus. There are plenty of color pictures and the style is very easy to read. I especially liked the drawings and photographs of concept cars he worked on, as well as modified one-off production cars that I hadn't seen before (e.g. - a Europa with clear 'sails'). I'm guessing they were documents from his personal collection and thus, not previously published.All in all, I highly recommended this book for any Lotus enthusiast as well as TVR, Jaguar and anyone else with a general automotive interest. Oh and there's also a chapter on his design work for Chapman's boat business which was very interesting!

There are indeed more comprehensive field guides to North American birds. There are field guides that more closely follow the most current taxonomy. But for all the taxonomic changes since 2001 most of the birds depicted in this guide retain the same English names and their field characteristics certainly haven't changed.The plates are arranged to simplify the comparison of similar species, and for the most part you'll find more species per page than in guides preferred by most advanced birders. New birders aren't overwhelmed with more information than is needed to identify (especially) the most commonly seen birds.You can fit this guide in a pocket and it holds up well to field use. Most people who get serious about birding will move on to NGS or Sibley or Peterson (among others), but before they do so the Golden Guide will do much to promote their development as birders.It's for that reason I rate it so highly. It doesn't pretend to be a guide that works well for advanced birders, but I consider it perhaps the best guide on the market for beginners. A new edition with taxonomic updates would be nice, but for novice birders it's certainly not necessary.

I bought this believing it would be a space saver reference while traveling in my RV. Unfortunately, it is not consistent in the manner information is provided - some bird's dimensions are provided, some are not. Some bird's have their upper side shown, while others are shown from the bottom side. When attempting to identify similar looking birds, this lack of information and inconsistent detail defeats the book's assumed intended purpose. It is also difficult to find specific birds in this version. I would not recommend the Kindle version of this book; and can't provide feedback on the printed version.

If you are Treasurer of the local Audubon club you are probably a fairly serious birder, and I am. I do not personally use this book except to log newly spotted species, but I love the book for beginners. Over the years I have used about every bird book there is, and to me and most of my friends this is the most beginner-friendly book ever. The pictures are clear and easy to interpret, the text is on the spare side so as not to intimidate the newby, and the arrangement is fairly intuitive. I bought this one as a gift to a new birder, probably the 8 or 9th time I have done it over the years.

I obtained the hardbound version of the book our Vertebrate Zoology Natural History class used in college. It is excellent in the ease of identifying the birds. It has COLOR pictures, provides differentiation points between similar species as well as the immature birds vs adults, the bird songs sonograms, ranges, flight patterns, etc. The book covers the entire US and some of Canada and Mexico, but does not segregate by East Coast/Central/West Coast - which means that unless one does a lot of continental traveling a lot of the info will not be useful. There is a newer edition (with blue cover) than the edition I used in college - I have both.

The printing of the plates is horrible, I have an older printing from the 1960's and the print quality is so much better. I got this one because the older one is my favorite bird book, I can locate new birds faster with it then any other bird book, and it is wearing out. I keep using the old book.

I bought this book to replace an earlier edition of the book that I've carried for years and used as my life list check list. The pages in my old book are dog eared and well worn. I'm not sure how well this new book will hold up. The paper is thinner, and the print looks a little washed out (lighter colors). The text and page numbers are the same. However, the checklist boxes in the index are missing. On the back cover, the dark box says that these check boxes are present, although they are not. This may not be an issue for someone who has another system to check list their lifelist, but it is something to be aware of with this book.On the plus side, I still like the way that they display the similar species together on one page for quick reference and have the range map on the same page. First page in each series is helpful where there are many birds that are similar and the book highlights key differentiating features.

THIS BOOK, PUBLISHED IN 1966 IS STILL ONE OF THE BEST FOR EASY IDENTIFICATION OF BIRDS AND THE MAPS THAT GO WITH EACH BIRD ID SHOWS YOU WHERE THAT BIRD IS LIKELY TO BE FOUND IN ALL OF NORTH AMERICA. I HAD AN EARLIER EDITION AND READ SO MANY GOOD THINGS ABOUT THIS EDITION, I FOUND THREE STILL AVAILABLE IN THE AMAZON SYSTEM AND GOT TWO FOR RELATIVES AND ONE FOR MYSELF. WHEN THIS VENDOR SAID "NEW CONDITION" IT IS INDEED IN NEW CONDITION. I NOTE THAT THE PRICE HAS RISEN RECENTLY. IF YOU OR A RELATIVE IS A "BIRDER" BETTER GET ONE OF THESE ASAP.

I ordered this book prior to publication and was pleasantly surprised to receive it sooner than anticipated. I ordered this book because the downloadable user's manual from Motorola falls way short of hitting the target. I want to begin with the fact that I thought I had figured out just about everything there was to find in the XOOM which I am a really big fan of. I was sure wrong. This book has more tips, hints and solid information than I could ever have imagined. The author suggests the book as a reference rather than a sit down and read. However, I did sit down and read the whole thing cover to cover with my XOOM in my lap. I could only read a page or two before I had to try something new or change a setting that I didn't know about. The author clearly knows the XOOM and all of it's ins and outs as well as it's warts. After having read this book and having applied much of the content I value my XOOM even more than ever. This book clearly added much value. The pictures and layout are excellent and the 5th Wave cartoons that begin many sections just add to the enjoyment. The authors dry humor and wit added to the fun of reading and exploring.After reading, I had two questions that weren't answered in the book. I e-mailed the author and received a reply overnight that answered them both. If you want a book that will enhance your XOOM experience, this is the one.

Bought the Hardcopy first and was to big to handle.I have gotten used to reading my kindle. I am stillreading the "hard copy" and using the "kindle" as areference on both my Kindle and my Xoom. Yes the"Kindle App" on the Xoom alows you to read the booksyou have on your kindle. The "Xoom for Dummies" hasanswered a lot of my questions. I can not understandwhy Motorola would give you such a useless instrunctionmanual rather than a manual such as the "Xoom for Dummies".If you want to get full use of your Xoom this book is agood investment

This book has enabled me to use my Xoom. The Xoom just sat around my house for the first few months that I owned it because I didn't know how to use it. The manual that comes with it is just about useless. Thanks for all the help.

Although it is presumed that if you buy a Xoom, you are technically-savvy enough to work it well, this book is a great resource for those of us who want to know a little more. In reading the first chapter on set-up, I learned about checking for external storage and other updates, as well as how to create a new and unique unlocking mechanism. I would recommend this book for people who know enough to want to learn more and who's pride will not be hurt by the "Dummies" title.

Much better than the book I was given when I received the Xoom from a client.....This one focuses ONLY on the Xoom whereas the one I had was a generic for all ANDROID tablets......

I needed help learning how to use my new Xoom and searched half jokingly for a Xoom for Dummies book and there it was. It has answered many questions already and helped me feel more comfortable navigating this tablet. I love the humor and style these books are written in, just what I need, basic info for the not so techno-savy.

This book is a good introduction to the basics of the Xoom and usage of the Android OS used on the Xoom. The author's writing is clear and easy to understand. That being said, I do wish that there was a little more depth in describing each subject's details and inner workings. Worth the money. I keep a copy of this book on my Xoom using the Amazon Kindle app so that I may reference it's informational how-to guides.
