There are indeed more comprehensive field guides to North American birds. There are field guides that more closely follow the most current taxonomy. But for all the taxonomic changes since 2001 most of the birds depicted in this guide retain the same English names and their field characteristics certainly haven't changed.The plates are arranged to simplify the comparison of similar species, and for the most part you'll find more species per page than in guides preferred by most advanced birders. New birders aren't overwhelmed with more information than is needed to identify (especially) the most commonly seen birds.You can fit this guide in a pocket and it holds up well to field use. Most people who get serious about birding will move on to NGS or Sibley or Peterson (among others), but before they do so the Golden Guide will do much to promote their development as birders.It's for that reason I rate it so highly. It doesn't pretend to be a guide that works well for advanced birders, but I consider it perhaps the best guide on the market for beginners. A new edition with taxonomic updates would be nice, but for novice birders it's certainly not necessary.

I bought this believing it would be a space saver reference while traveling in my RV. Unfortunately, it is not consistent in the manner information is provided - some bird's dimensions are provided, some are not. Some bird's have their upper side shown, while others are shown from the bottom side. When attempting to identify similar looking birds, this lack of information and inconsistent detail defeats the book's assumed intended purpose. It is also difficult to find specific birds in this version. I would not recommend the Kindle version of this book; and can't provide feedback on the printed version.

If you are Treasurer of the local Audubon club you are probably a fairly serious birder, and I am. I do not personally use this book except to log newly spotted species, but I love the book for beginners. Over the years I have used about every bird book there is, and to me and most of my friends this is the most beginner-friendly book ever. The pictures are clear and easy to interpret, the text is on the spare side so as not to intimidate the newby, and the arrangement is fairly intuitive. I bought this one as a gift to a new birder, probably the 8 or 9th time I have done it over the years.

I obtained the hardbound version of the book our Vertebrate Zoology Natural History class used in college. It is excellent in the ease of identifying the birds. It has COLOR pictures, provides differentiation points between similar species as well as the immature birds vs adults, the bird songs sonograms, ranges, flight patterns, etc. The book covers the entire US and some of Canada and Mexico, but does not segregate by East Coast/Central/West Coast - which means that unless one does a lot of continental traveling a lot of the info will not be useful. There is a newer edition (with blue cover) than the edition I used in college - I have both.

The printing of the plates is horrible, I have an older printing from the 1960's and the print quality is so much better. I got this one because the older one is my favorite bird book, I can locate new birds faster with it then any other bird book, and it is wearing out. I keep using the old book.

I bought this book to replace an earlier edition of the book that I've carried for years and used as my life list check list. The pages in my old book are dog eared and well worn. I'm not sure how well this new book will hold up. The paper is thinner, and the print looks a little washed out (lighter colors). The text and page numbers are the same. However, the checklist boxes in the index are missing. On the back cover, the dark box says that these check boxes are present, although they are not. This may not be an issue for someone who has another system to check list their lifelist, but it is something to be aware of with this book.On the plus side, I still like the way that they display the similar species together on one page for quick reference and have the range map on the same page. First page in each series is helpful where there are many birds that are similar and the book highlights key differentiating features.

THIS BOOK, PUBLISHED IN 1966 IS STILL ONE OF THE BEST FOR EASY IDENTIFICATION OF BIRDS AND THE MAPS THAT GO WITH EACH BIRD ID SHOWS YOU WHERE THAT BIRD IS LIKELY TO BE FOUND IN ALL OF NORTH AMERICA. I HAD AN EARLIER EDITION AND READ SO MANY GOOD THINGS ABOUT THIS EDITION, I FOUND THREE STILL AVAILABLE IN THE AMAZON SYSTEM AND GOT TWO FOR RELATIVES AND ONE FOR MYSELF. WHEN THIS VENDOR SAID "NEW CONDITION" IT IS INDEED IN NEW CONDITION. I NOTE THAT THE PRICE HAS RISEN RECENTLY. IF YOU OR A RELATIVE IS A "BIRDER" BETTER GET ONE OF THESE ASAP.

I ordered this book prior to publication and was pleasantly surprised to receive it sooner than anticipated. I ordered this book because the downloadable user's manual from Motorola falls way short of hitting the target. I want to begin with the fact that I thought I had figured out just about everything there was to find in the XOOM which I am a really big fan of. I was sure wrong. This book has more tips, hints and solid information than I could ever have imagined. The author suggests the book as a reference rather than a sit down and read. However, I did sit down and read the whole thing cover to cover with my XOOM in my lap. I could only read a page or two before I had to try something new or change a setting that I didn't know about. The author clearly knows the XOOM and all of it's ins and outs as well as it's warts. After having read this book and having applied much of the content I value my XOOM even more than ever. This book clearly added much value. The pictures and layout are excellent and the 5th Wave cartoons that begin many sections just add to the enjoyment. The authors dry humor and wit added to the fun of reading and exploring.After reading, I had two questions that weren't answered in the book. I e-mailed the author and received a reply overnight that answered them both. If you want a book that will enhance your XOOM experience, this is the one.

Bought the Hardcopy first and was to big to handle.I have gotten used to reading my kindle. I am stillreading the "hard copy" and using the "kindle" as areference on both my Kindle and my Xoom. Yes the"Kindle App" on the Xoom alows you to read the booksyou have on your kindle. The "Xoom for Dummies" hasanswered a lot of my questions. I can not understandwhy Motorola would give you such a useless instrunctionmanual rather than a manual such as the "Xoom for Dummies".If you want to get full use of your Xoom this book is agood investment

This book has enabled me to use my Xoom. The Xoom just sat around my house for the first few months that I owned it because I didn't know how to use it. The manual that comes with it is just about useless. Thanks for all the help.

Although it is presumed that if you buy a Xoom, you are technically-savvy enough to work it well, this book is a great resource for those of us who want to know a little more. In reading the first chapter on set-up, I learned about checking for external storage and other updates, as well as how to create a new and unique unlocking mechanism. I would recommend this book for people who know enough to want to learn more and who's pride will not be hurt by the "Dummies" title.

I needed help learning how to use my new Xoom and searched half jokingly for a Xoom for Dummies book and there it was. It has answered many questions already and helped me feel more comfortable navigating this tablet. I love the humor and style these books are written in, just what I need, basic info for the not so techno-savy.

This book is a good introduction to the basics of the Xoom and usage of the Android OS used on the Xoom. The author's writing is clear and easy to understand. That being said, I do wish that there was a little more depth in describing each subject's details and inner workings. Worth the money. I keep a copy of this book on my Xoom using the Amazon Kindle app so that I may reference it's informational how-to guides.

Digitally rendered illustrations assist in telling the story of the artist who followed her own vision and relished playing with color. The pictures show paint swirling off the artwork Blair created, emphasizing her desire to be free to do what came naturally. A variety of hues with which readers may not be familiar are introduced, such as sienna, azure, viridian, cerulean, and mauve. Blair accepted a position with Walt Disney Studios during the Depression, assuming the company would welcome her artistic flair. The scene of her first day at work depicts her dressed in teal and pink while the other illustrators, all men, wear black, brown, gray, and white—foretelling the resistance to individuality she encountered. Blair soon resigned from that position and found satisfaction in illustrating books and advertisements, but years later Walt Disney himself hired her back. He appreciated her unconventional use of color and wanted it for the "It's a Small World" ride he designed for the 1964 World's Fair. The ending spread pays homage to that very ride, showing a slew of kids, dressed in cultural costumes, holding hands; however, this depiction reinforces many stereotypes and will likely need to be followed by a discussion. I bought this book to read with my daughter who is five. This book is everything I look for in books for her. It's beautifully written with attention to language and sound, it features someone who relentlessly follows her dreams despite obstacles, and it teaches readers about Mary Blair while helping them learn new color words they may not have heard before. It's stunningly illustrated as well and we spent time matching the colors used in the text to the colors used in the images. I didn't know much about Mary Blair as an artist before, so I'm happy I got to share this learning experience with my daughter.

This book is wonderful! I ordered it per a friend's recommendation and it's so lovely. Beautiful illustrations, rich language, and an inspiring story for kids. Also, the suggested age is 4-8 (which I think is appropriate) but my son is 2.5 and he loves it and will gladly sit through the entire thing and then asks to read it again, in large part because the illustrations are so colorful and engaging! Highly recommend and it would make an excellent gift!

This book is a delight. Not only is it a lesson in colors, and the use to color your world, but it is the life of a young girl who loved color. Even though employed by Disney, the men in the administration above her, declined her bright work suggestions. She leaves and pursues her own career only to be contacted by Walt Disney himself, asking her to come back. She does on one condition, she has the final word. She designs the new exhibit for Disneyland — It's a Small World. Youngsters and families have been enjoying it ever since. She also was the illustrator for some of the Little Golden Books. A Magical story of color and following your dream. Perfect gift for little artists in your family. Great for school and classroom libraries.

This is a great biography of Mary Blair the artist who created the art for It's a Small World. I am excited to share this with other stories of women who worked hard to achieve and persisted no matter being held back by others.

My wife and I are always looking for what we call, "not for T.V. cooking" or regressive cooking/foods. This is a great collection of simple recipes with Maine flavor and Shaker simplicity. We like to try something new out of this book weekly to expand our culinary diversity and stay away from junk, overprocessed, high profit foods. Sis Frances has the years of experience to be quailfied to write and pass on the stories of a lifetime.

I was v ery pleased to hear how my children enjoyed this delightful cook book with its helpful hints

A friend gave me this cookbook some years ago. I've made many recipes out of it, and I've adapted several others.The biggest hit with my family and friends is the onion casserole recipe. I changed it a bit to match my family's tastes by substituting cheddar cheese for the recipe's Swiss (actually combining the onion casserole and onion pie recipes), and my family raved over it to the point where I had to bring it for every holiday.The same thing happened when I started taking it to a yearly holiday party.I recently changed it a bit more by adding browned bulk sausage, but I still go to Shaker Your Plate to make sure I have the basics correct.Another huge winner is the Almond Cream Cake, the Ham and Noodle casserole is quite tasty, and Brother Ted's Swedish Meatballs are really, really good.I was saddened to learn that Sister Carr passed away early last year. I had contacted her at Sabbath Day Lake some years before that to let her know how much I liked her book. She was very gracious and appreciative.

The combination of great recipes and the personal stories by Sister Frances eldress of the Sabbathday Lake, Maine Shakers make this a precious book on my kitchen shelf of cookbooks. My family loves the results!
