Moreover, it opens with a good group of philosphical paradigms, which allow the reader to consider many angles to consider each dilemma. Also, the book covers a broad range of situations and scenarios that will come up in the careers of nearly any journalist.I have used this book for a course titled Ethics in the News Media in an accredted program at a Research I institution and believe it is a great discussion item for a seminar course. Students get dozens upon dozens of things to consider, and just as we would hope to do in academia, the author does not make decisions about what is right or wrong, leaving that to the reader.

I paid an extra $7 for priority shipping, and the book came half wet. The packaging was soggy, and the entire bottom section of the book is now wrinkly and drenched.

This is a tough book to read. It's unbelievable the conditions forced on an entire country. The author tells the story with truth even when that truth is painful. The character development and settings are developed but not overdeveloped. I now have a better understanding of human trafficking and how it happens. And I appreciate the crushing debt and hopelessness that many Chinese families endure. I visited China in the early 80s and I remember our female tour guide treating us with contempt because us Americans couldn't understand why boy babies were more valued than girl babies. This story brings that sentiment to life. Nice job, Ms. Lui.

I thoroughly enjoyed this books about the lives of two modern day women working in the factories of China. It took a look at China's unique laws on reproduction laws and spun it into a suspenseful, heart-wrenching story. If you enjoy stories about different cultures, want to read about thought provoking real life issues, or enjoy reading about the complex relationships of well developed characters, this book is for you.

Expertly captures the realities facing young people in modern China in a page-turning, heartrending story.

My opinions are 100% my own and independent of receiving an advanced copy.Luli has turned 16 and is turned out from the orphanage where she spent most of her life. She is off to the big city to meet up with her friend, Yun, who left the year before. Yun has a factory job and has promised to help Luli find a job and get settled. Although it is backbreaking work, it is better than staying to work at the orphanage looking after the babies. Luli can see how much Yun has changed in the one year since she left the orphanage. She has a stylish haircut, new clothes, disposable cash and a boyfriend. Luli learns that Yun’s boyfriend is bad news. He might be involved in trafficking women. Luli tried to warn her friend, but Yun doesn’t believe it. Soon Yun finds herself pregnant, alone and discovers that what people have been saying about her boyfriend is true. But she needs him to help pay for the abortion. The one child policy and the fact that she is unmarried, will make it impossible for her to keep the baby. At 16, she doesn’t want the responsibility. She is only just starting her life. Luli want to help her friend but how can she support her terminating the pregnancy or even worse, having the baby and giving it to the orphanage. The book explores the topics of family, friendship, coming of age, love, unwanted pregnancy and the One Child Policy in China through though the lives of these tow young girls as they navigate life on their own.I have mixed feelings towards this novel. I thought that it did an amazing job of illustrating how difficult life can be in China. Being an orphan is tough. Having to support yourself at 16 is even harder. Getting pregnant at 16, with no family and having to make very tough decisions seems almost impossible. But when you explore these issues through the lens of another culture it really is eye opening. I had heard about the One Child policy, but I never considered what that entailed. I was very aware of the fact that girls were being abandoned, or worse killed, in order to have the “preferred” sons. I was also aware that it created a gender imbalance that has had huge ramifications for that society. I did not realize that if you did have a secret second baby they would not be considered a citizen and therefore wouldn’t be able to go to school or find a job. I was mildly aware of the deplorable conditions in the orphanages, but Liu brings to light so many issues that I hadn’t considered. She also did a great job of examining difficult issues through the lens of another culture. There were so many things in the story that made me feel if you were unlucky enough to be a pregnant orphan at 16, you were still way better off to be in North America. The. backbreaking work in the factory, being fined for having a baby that would take you most of your life to pay back, the prejudices against anyone outside of the norm makes for a very oppressive life.There were a few things that didn’t work for me. One was the alternating chapters between Yun and Luli. This didn’t work for me at all. I find it disrupted the story and the transitions were awkward, even jarring, at times. The biggest downside for me was the language. I’m not sure why but the best way I can explain it is that it seemed too simplistic. It almost felt like a translation. I don’t think it did the story any justice. It kept bothering me as I was reading and it took me out of the story. I’m not referring to the dialogue between characters. However, the structure was sound and the events flowed nicely. Overall, I think this was an important story to tell and I would recommend it to others.

Luli was finally leaving the Gujiao Children’s Social Welfare Institute 17. It was simply a glorified name for an orphanage where the disabled and unwanted kids were tossed. The Institute, as it was called, had been Luli’s home since she was an eight-year-old. She had family, but her grandfather was dying and could no longer care for her. Luli’s best friend at the Institute, Yun, had already left to find work at a tech factory. There would be “no more taking care of babies, mopping floors, washing dishes.” Instead, sixteen-year-old Luli was hoping Yun would find her a job. It wouldn’t be easy because no one wanted to hire orphans.Yun, who was a year older than Luli, was already making “charger cords for electronic cigarettes ... a mind-numbing finger-numbing, neck-and back-aching” job. Better than taking care of babies any day of the week and it paid real money. Yun was one of the lucky ones, even though she didn’t think so. With a pockmarked face and not one, but four totally ugly black marks on her face, she was a social pariah. Orphan, unlucky four ... not exactly a young woman anyone would want. Yun was already dating and clubbing. First it was Ming, the foreman’s son, and then Yong, a purported “bride trafficker.”Of course Yun didn’t believe a word of that bride trafficking stuff and believed Yong when he claimed he was simply a “bride collector.” Yuli was definitely naive, but listened closely when Ming claimed it was true. “Yun’s boyfriend,” he explained to Yuli, “is a kidnapper ... they kidnap girls and women and sell them to men out in the countryside.” Ming was probably just jealous, but you never can tell with some people. Yun was getting a bit wild, maybe a lot wild, and was continually late for work. It was no wonder no one wanted to hire orphans and Yun was totally irritating the foreman with her excuses. All the lectures in the world from Foreman Chen didn’t seem to sink in.Luli was Yun’s only family in a way and she knew that Yun was a bit of a faker. I’m “practicing my emotions,” she’d explain when they were kids. Was she faking being sick or not? Maybe, maybe not, but Foreman Chen was sick, sick, sick of all the lame excuses. Fired. Yun had been fired, but this time she really was sick, as in miserably sick. The Modern Women’s Health Clinic bluntly told Yun that “Unless you can pay the social compensation for having an unauthorized pregnancy, you won’t be able to get a birth permit.” Both Luli and Yun were totally shocked. Would the not-so-innocent Yong step in to sell someone? Just who would it be ... the Yun, Luli, or worse yet, the unborn baby?This was a riveting YA novel I simply couldn’t put down once I got into it. Jennie Liu breathed life into Luli and Yun’s lives, so much the YA reader will find it an emotionally tense read. No doubt most will have heard about China’s One-Child policy, but few will understand the impact of it on teens, their peers on the other side of the globe. There’s a lot of social history to be gleaned from this book, some I wasn’t aware of. For example, because Yong himself was an unauthorized second child, whose family was unable to pay the fines, there were serious repercussions.In his case “Yong became a non-person. He couldn’t go to school or get a decent position without his hukou.” The problems of the One-Child policy become very much apparent in this novel, something that give the reader food for thought. In the Author’s Note, there is a brief, insightful history about the history and consequences of this policy as well as the newer Two-Child one. In the back of the book are sixteen questions under “Topics for Discussion.” This is not only a fascinating stand-alone read, but an excellent one for a wide variety of classes from social studies to history and beyond. Linguistics and archaeology have made significant contributions, but many important questions seem not to have been answered once and for all. Maybe they never will. Questions like 'who wrote these texts?' have been answered in too many different ways to leave us with a clear conclusion. We don't know for sure, if key persons like Abraham, Moses, Joshua, or even David really existed, or if they are mere giants of mythology. Or if anything like the exodus happened. Or the conquering of Canaan by an invading Israel. Or if the alleged wisdom of King Solomon has a base in truth. (Mustn't he rather have been quite a loser, in view of the breaking up of his kingdom as soon as he was gone?)What about the beginnings of monolatry and monotheism? No definite answers.Which child did Isaiah's prophecy, about the child that will be born, that Christmas lore likes to emphasize, refer to, actually? And more of the kind.I recommend this book if you want to update yourself on the various disputes about biblical interpretation.How does the author reconcile the findings, that he reports here, with his personal religious attitude? He doesn't. '...modern biblical scholarship and traditional Judaism are and must always remain completely irreconcilable.'In the last chapter, the author admits to his personal contradiction: his religious self considers modern Bible research irrelevant. A split mind.My headline is a quote from page 411. The chapter deals with the kingless period of Israel. Whether the author meant to comment on modern politics in Israel or the US is not clear to me.

This book is written in order to explore two broad themes: how did faithful Jews and Christians read the Bible in the centuries leading up to the beginnings of modern archaeology and textual criticism; and how has the work of these technical experts put a new spin on the texts and challenged what we believed? Kugel does not try to reconcile the two. But if you would like a clearly written, concise explanation of the differences between those two camps, this book does a bang-up job.

A better title for the book would be "How to Read the Old Testament." The book only covers the Old Testament and is very informative. A fascinating study of the Old Testament of the Bible, which is considered the books for the Jewish religion, and a preface for the Christian religion. This is a great book and I am glad that I took the opportunity to buy and read this book. The author writes in a very understandable book about a difficult subject. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to know and understand the Jewish religion and what influenced the Christian religion. One of the very few books that I consider worth rereading over and over again.

What a refreshing and invaluable book! Kugel is a magnificent explicator who succeeds in making the historical and religious stew of the "Old Testament" come alive in all its complexity. Only quibble is with the publisher (Free Press, a division of Simon and Schuster): my edition of the book (2007 paperback) is lacking a whole "signature" of pages, from pp. 263 through 294. Be sure to check that your copy includes those pages.

There's a phenomenon at large, prestigious colleges and universities that I think it peculiar to that kind of institution (although my experience of others is limited, and I can't be sure). I call it "Rock Star Professors." They are people whose lectures are performances in the best sense of the word. These professors are enlightening, amusing, and charismatic and a great many students sign up for their classes even if they don't have any interest in the subject matter.James L. Kugel, now at Bar Ilan University in Israel, was just such a Rock Star Professor during the over 20 years he taught at Harvard. His introduction to the Bible course regularly drew 900 students, many of them not particularly interested in religion. When the enrollment for his course surpassed the similarly popular introductory economics course taught by John Kenneth Galbraith, the headline in the Harvard Crimson read "God Beats Mammon."I've never had the opportunity to hear Kugel lecture, but if his new book How to Read the Bible is representative of his work, he is certainly engaging, enlightening and charismatic in print, as well. As it happens the subject matter is of great interest to me, but it's also something that can be written in a deadly dull style and Kugel completely avoids that.His task in this book is to look at the Hebrew Bible (in English translation) from two distinct points of view: that of the people he calls the "ancient interpreters" (both Christian and Jewish) and that of modern biblical scholarship (incorporating linguistic, archaeological, and historical findings into our understanding). He begins by saying that, as an Orthodox Jew, the findings of modern scholarship that show that the Bible was written by a variety of people at a variety of times and that some of the "historical" sections could not represent actual history were very disturbing to him. He had some misgivings and indecision about entering into academic biblical scholarship as his life work. OTOH, Kugel expounds, he didn't feel he could just ignore what others had found out and he needed to come to some sort of modus vivendi that allowed him to continue to live an observant life and accept this information. From the totally opposite point of view, he points out that an understanding of how the Bible has been interpreted through history in both Jewish and Christian views is essential to understanding much of Western literature, art, and culture, so it's insufficient to just acquaint oneself with modern scholarship.So Kugel compares and contrasts the two approaches, and does so with the genius of a great storyteller and showman. The Bible is - among other things - a collection of great stories and he tells them with aplomb and with an appreciation for the contrast between the traditional and scholarly views. Was the story of Adam and Eve one of the Fall of Man, as traditionally interpreted, or an etiological tale about the movement from hunter/gatherer society to a more agrarian culture, as archaeological and linguistic evidence suggests? Why are there three different "wife/sister" stories in the Bible, where a patriarch tries to pass his wife off as his sister? Who wrote the Psalms and what was their original purpose? Was David king of a great nation, protege of King Saul, and a flawed human being in his private life, or an upstart who launched a military coup and took over a small chiefdom? Did he even exist? Kugel expounds on all these questions with insight, skill, and frequent laugh-out-loud humor.How to Read the Bible is a fascinating book and chock full of Fun Facts to Know and Tell. Most of all, I found it left me feeling like I'd love to have James Kugel for a dinner guest. Or, barring that, at least get to be one of those 900 students listening to the Rock Star Professor.

From what this lady went through, she complains little, has great memory and the story flows smoothing and keeps your interest. I have to add this book to one of the favorites and knowledgeable of all frontier story's I have read recently. A remarkable lady in a dangerous time.

An interesting story by the wife of a Cavalry Officer and her adventure coming West to join him, becoming a widow and then returning to her home in Tennessee apparently later remarrying. Implies she did not like Native American but all part of her story and the times . Her experiences will astound you for life in what is now Wyoming was not easy for soldiers much less their wives.

I purchased this book to give me some background of what life was like for army wives stationed out West and in this particularcase, Fort Phil Kearny. The author was the wife of Lt. Grummond that was killed in the Fetterman massacre and she speaks at lengthabout her arrival at the Fort, the times leading up to the massacre and what happened after.I was able to glean a lot of information about the happenings at the Fort as well as what travel was like for the women whoaccompanied their husbands to the isolated garrisons. Especially interesting is the discussion of winter travel.All in all, a good book that gives the reader a general idea of what life was like at an isolated army post. There is other materialcovering her trip from the East as well as extensive material about the events that came much later - after she left the post.

This is a good historical account, although one-sided, of the incidents of Fort Phil Kearney and the actions of Fetterman and the commanding officer. A much better account of what life was like for soldiers, and especially their wives during this period of history.

Her style of writing is almost archaic but interesting, I have read pieces from the 1850's that had much more fluidity to their structure.

First class read.

Amazing read.

The company I work for is finally upgrading our computer systems. We got a memo last week telling us we are going to be switching over to a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure system. To be honest I'd never even heard of VDI.As a manager with the company, we have to attend some training sessions for the new system so I decided to give myself a head start and do some research. That's how I came to find this book.Now, I'll admit right off the bat, I'm a manager not a computer guy, so I was a bit worried that the information presented would be too "techie" for me and go right over my head. Happily, that was not the case at all. The Author has written a very easy to digest book, even for a layman such as myself. The book is well written, clearly laid out and easy to follow.I'd highly recommend this book to anyone running a business with an IT department or anyone who is interested in the future of computers as they relate to business, productivity and security.

While I am not an IT professional, I like to stay on top of the most current trends that will help to streamline my workplace—and increase our data security. Lately I have been hearing a lot about VDI, but couldn’t quite grasp the benefits of making the move. This guide was just what I needed to understand the basics of VDI, its benefits, and to help determine if it was a good fit for my business. While there are technical terms in this book, it is written in a manner that is fully explained and easy for non-IT savvy readers to comprehend.

Only recently did I start sticking my toes in the sand of the IT world and once I came across this book, I decided to give it a read for personal and professional insight. The author did a great job providing thorough details so even newbies, like myself, can understand the world of IT. Definitely recommend.

This is a great guide on desktop virtualization, it's uses and features, and how to manage it. It gives clear instructions and tips on how to implement the system, in order to keep a companies computers secure. What you get with this book, however, is something you don't get in books like this very often: honesty. It doesn't shy away or completely ignore the risks and downsides of implementing a VDI system, but it does prove it's case, and I think it shows that the many positives outweigh the negatives.This was a very easy read, as well. Everything was broken down simply, and it flowed from one topic to the next very smoothly. I highly recommend it for anyone working in IT, that wants a clearer understanding of desktop virtualization.
