Im giving this book 5 stars as it is easy to read and is about an interesting but often over looked Emperor(s) and era of the Roman Empire, the "Crisis of the Third Century". While the book is named After Aurelian, in all honesty it focuses as well on the Emperors who preceded Aurelian and those who ruled after him, who the author calls the Danubian Generals. The author does a good job of showing how the Danubian Gernerals Claudius, Aurelian and Probus were able to "restore" the fractured Roman Empire earning the later two the title "Restitutor Orbis" Restorer of the World by the Roman Senate. The climax of this restoration campaign came about under Aurelian, as he was able to repel the barbarians and recover the parts of the Empire that had broken away from Roman domination under one rule again. What Aurelian and the Danubian generals did was preserve the advanced culture of the Roman empire, and thus Western civilization, for later Emperors who get all the credit for this feat, such as Diocletian, Justinian and Constantine the Great.I really enjoyed this book, the author did a great job of portraying the Roman empire during the time of Aurelian and the chaos and disorder that he was able to conquer. It also does a great job of helping one to understand why the Roman empire fell and why it always split even after being united by late Emperors such Constantine, Justinian etc. The Roman Empire was truly ahead of its time, many of its innovations would not be seen again in Europe until the 19th century, and its my opinion as to why it fell(well one of the main reasons), it was pretty much a European Colonial Empire in the BC to Early AD era, before the advances in Technology that allowed for the Colonial Empires of modern history. Its no surprise that it was the former provinces of Rome(England, Spain, France, Portugal etc) that would form the bulk of Modern Colonial Empires. The Author identifies a bust usually attributed to Claudius to Aurelian, interestingly many online site seem to follow his judgement.The book was easy to read but it you are new to the history Rome I would suggest reading a few books on basics of Roman history, not that this book cant be a starting point or read alone, its just probably better to familiarize yourself with why the Author wrote the book in the first place, why "Restoring the World" was even significant.Now the drawbacks, ok so before purchasing this book I read another review that was critical of the authors opinion and statement that "Christianity was "probably Rome's greatest" legacy to the world" and that " the barbarians took everything away from Rome that was of value and gave "nothing" in return,". Well first off I think the reviewer misunderstood the Author, while the statement is certainly over the top, its not completely untrue. Christianity certainly did "unite"( very loosely) Europeans in a way that the pagans were never able to do, the fact is that it was Roman Christianity that gave both the Roman and Barbarian Europeans a shared culture to draw upon. The author certainly doesnt believe Christianity was the ONLY legacy that Rome gave us as the reviewer is implying, and in the very next paragraphs mentions the very examples that the reviewer is lamenting about.."(Not plumbing, sewers, running water, the Law, concrete, architecture and so on)", though I think the statement should have been worded better by the author. As far as the Author's opinions on the Barbarians, yes he seems biased against them, but is his statement that untrue? I mean the Barbarians did loot and pillage a more advanced culture until the point that they had to eventually fend for themselves once there was nothing left to pillage, creating huts and primitive villages on top of the stone ruins of the cities they burned and looted and razed to the ground and allowing the surviving monuments to fall into decay, also it was the Romanesque and Roman influenced Gothic periods that gave the barbarians and their Descendants their advanced cultures, did the Barbarians contribute their own cultures to Rome, sure but anything they brought pales in comparison to the influence of Rome on them. If you can get past these biases you will enjoy this book.
I was very disappointed by John White's use of dubious accounts concerning the fates of Gordian III and Valerian. The story that Gordian III was killed at the instigation of Phillip is actually just a propaganda invention and White's use of it flies in the face of recent scholarship. The author of THE MIDDLE EAST UNDER ROME used a better version, apparently based on the views of Kettenhofen, Hartman and Winter.White also erred by including the claim that Valerian was taken while attempting negotiation--another propaganda invention. In THE ROMAN EASTERN FRONTIER AND THE PERSIAN WARS, Dodgeon and Luei did not consider that version likely. It is certainly not the most parsimonious.....White also appears ignorant of recent interpretations of the Naqs i-Rustam and Bishapur monuments. According to the new view, PHILLIP not Valerian, is the kneeling figure.True, the fates of Aurelian's predecessors were not John White's main concern when writing the book. Nevertheless the errors cast doubt on his knowledge of scholarship on the third century, and judgment as a historian.
Aurelian was a Roman Emperor of the late Third Century AD, when Rome was experiencing difficulties. The Eastern section of Rome, e.g. Syria, Palestine and Egypt, was taken over by Zenobia of Palmyra and Gaul and Britain left Rome to create their own state. At that time, there were also continuous barbarian invasions from the Goths, Alamannis and Franks.Aurelian became the Emperor in 270 AD and straightened that all out. He defeated Palmyra, brought Gaul and Britain back into the empire and defeated the barbarian invasions numerous times. And, he accomplished this is five years.This book does an excellent job of describing this in a lot of detail. At the start, the author provides the sources for his biography, which are few and not detailed. And, then he masterfully uses those sources to create an interesting story, in some detail, about the events that transpired.For anyone interested in the Roman Empire, I highly recommend this book. It is well written and interesting to read.
Good book. A little sketchy on details, basically because a lot of the source materials have been lost over time. Good analysis of the historiography, shortcomings of what's available, etc. Rulers of that time didn't last long(palace revolts) and had a hell of a time with the barbarian incursions happening all the time. They would put out a fire one place then have to rush off to repel an invasion somewhere else. Makes you wonder how the Roman Empire lasted as long as it did.

I am a historian..love Roman History, so this book worked well for me. My takeaway on this period was how difficult it was to manage the empire during the 3rd century with the borders always under pressure from the barbarian incursions.
A very good book that I enjoyed reading - until it was actually about Aurelian. The chapter about the fall of the Roman Empire was not only unnecessary, but it contains mistakes: for instance, Romulus Augustulus was not "deposed by a Gothic king ruling from Gaul": Odoacer was a Roman general of most probably Scirian descent and he never ruled from Gaul.
I would have preferred a shorter book but, this writer makes a strong case for the greatness that Aurelian brought to the task at hand. Secured the empire's borders and pushed back against the empire's nasty enemies.
