While I personally found the book to be incredibly interesting, my 5th grade daughter did not. I am a history buff so it held my attention while we read it for a homeschool unit on Ancient Egypt. Her attention wandered though. The book is well written and filled with history but it may be too in depth of a topic for some kids. To break it up a bit, we combined it with other activities and books that she was more interested in.With that said, it did what I intended it to do. She learned and as a homeschool mom, I can't ask for much more than that.

Our 7 year old is SUPER into ancient Egypt history and this is a good one, full of facts. A little advanced and a slow read. Fun to learn together!

An excellent and thought-provoking study of the impeachment power. It really impresses on you how much impeachment was intended to be rare and extraordinary by design. In a way, it's somewhat comforting. Even though I would like nothing more than to see our current president fired, after reading this I reached the conclusion if he's never impeached that doesn't necessarily mean that our democracy is broken, it may just be because it's such an extraordinarily heavy lift to impeach a president that it may be practically impossible. Really, the framers intended for our primary remedy to be to vote a bad president out in the next election (which is why they chose 4 year terms, a radically short interval for power in the days this was all designed). Of course it's essential that the impeachment remedy exist and be theoretically available, but the U.S. may actually never see a president removed this way. It teaches us that the most important thing to do in the face of a bad president is to call out his bad acts repeatedly, and vote against him next time. That means that a good number of people are already doing what we're supposed to do.

Very interesting, focused my thoughts a great deal. But they aren’t great writers and I had to force myself to keep going several times. Just more academic and dry than other nonfiction books I’ve read lately. I do recommend it though, regardless of if you think it’s a good idea or a bad one at this particular moment in time. It will make you think and question your instincts.

Of course it was a more professorial approach but I learned much I did not know before how impeachment could throw us into more difficult times. More precarious in terms of our democracy. And the problems associated with it. I just felt impeach and get him out of here but it is a much more complicated and often treacherous process.

A very educated book on impeachment and its history in our country. Nice to read a book full of facts. This shows the value of having authors that are knowledgeable of what they speak. A lot of good info for anyone interested in the subject of impeachment. I feel much more conversant with the subject now. A perfect time to read a book on this subject.

Disappointing. Compulsively-detailed analyses. The writing in this book is the epitome of "getting into the political weeds". My BA is in Political Science with an emphasis on Constitutional Law. From where I sit, there's no excuse for a president who fails to adhere to the Constitution, thereby violating his Oath of Office. But, as the authors point out, impeachment may not be the only way to remove an exceedingly unqualified, bad, destructive, selfish, egomaniacal, narcissistic, cruel president, from office.The esteemed authors of this book look at this issue from every angle possible, and manage to make excuses, assumptions, generalizations, rationalizations, and invalidations of most of the major principles of the Constitution. When they can't figure out what Trump is doing, they simply fabricate a possible outcome of Trump's actions, and draw inadequate and illogical conclusions. The authors tend to forget that the law simply isn't being followed when it comes to this president, and the Constitution is being violated over and over again. It's difficult to accept that a 230 year old document is still relevant in these current times. Might the Trump presidency instigate a Constitutional Convention so that we can bring the document into the 21st century?The gratifying aspect of this book (for me) is the recounting of how radically irrational and flat-out criminal in nature that certain acts of former presidents have occurred in history, whether punished or not. It is somewhat of a relief to realize that we're not the only ones to suffer through a presidency which started out with a known criminal, and which will predictably end with numerous criminal acts (committed while in office) being revealed, whether he is prosecuted or not.Plowing through this book is like being in a gold mine...few nuggets to cash-in on, and lots of digging and sifting.

Very well written.excellent guide.Clearly explain a complex process. Impeachment put into historical context since Founding Fathers.Based on objective facts through history. No bias toward this current presidency. I find this book very informative, a pleasure to read. Highly recommended for those who want to learn about this incredible tool to use in order to remove the corrupt and the unfit to hold the constitution and keep democracy alive. I learned how fragile democratic process could be and how much thoughts our Founding Fathers did put into this "tool-to-protect" the constitution... A keeper. A+

The authors concisely explain the process of presidential impeachment and go into detail on how it might (in my opinion, should) be applied to Donald Trump. Instead of a highly partisan diatribe, they offer an analysis of our past presidential impeachments, suggest parallels and dissimilarities to Trump's criminal and dangerous acts and then outline what we can expect next as more and more Trump "impeachables" are revealed. I highly recommend the book for those on any side of the issue to become educated on the immanent end of the soon-to-be-impeached Trump.

In my opinion I feel that Wilson's FENCES is his best play. I've read THE PIANO LESSON and SEVEN GUITARS. August Wilson is an EXCELLENT playwright who truly captures the African American struggle with such humor, satire, irony, hope, and sadness. This was a good read, but not one of his best to me.

Each of August Wilson's plays is rich, memerable, and wholly poetic in its scope of the African American experience. Naturally with any series in any genre or medium, some plays are not as good as others--but mostly the entire cycle is a near masterpiece, and certain plays in the cycle (such as Fences) are a perfect masterpiece.If you look at the structure of the cycle, you will see that to have ten plays put together to encompass a whole century in the lives of an entire group of people is no small feat. When August Wilson writes of the African Americans, he is in a sense writing about all Americans and how they live their lives. The plays demonstrate their voice in the rich poetry of the blues--one could very well be called the blues musician of the pen and the paper. With no more than a tenth grade education and a lifelong passion for books, Wilson has proven himself a true visionary.August Wilson died in 2005. His absence will be long grieved, just as his immortal works will surely be forever cherished for their sharp-edged beauty and piercing vitality.

One of his best. I am two plays short of owning the entire cycle. August Wilson was (and is) the voice for a generation.

I was especially rewarded by seeing a superb professional production of this play the other night! I strongly recommend reading it before watching it; the experience is that much more impactful.

i don't read much much as i cant find a book to interest me enough , but this was an amazing play . I wish i can find more like it .

Floyd Barton promised to give Vera the moon. Problem was he wasn't no good, and her neighbor Louise tried to tell her that. Yet, while reading August Wilson's play, Seven Guitars, you want what Louise said to be just talk as Wilson uses other male characters in the sets explore the disenfranchisement many black men felt during the period in which the story occurs. As he does so, you have no idea where the story will go. Then again, clues are dropped, like Hedley's machete, to let you know something isn't going to end well.

I gave this text only four stars out of five, because the first half on the origins of Islam through the seventeenth century could have been more thorough. The book is essentially divided into two parts. The first half covers the basic history and doctrines of Islam in the early period. The second half is dedicated to the Islam in the modern world with a focus on contemporary religion.The first half is superficial at best. Its primary utility is to point the reader to other sources. The text must be supplemented with a reader in primary sources like Rippin's Textual Sources for the Study of Islam, or Cragg and Speight's Islam from Within. The text is biased toward history and doctrine with very little attention paid toward ritual. However, there are some insights on Islamic architecture well worth reading.The second half on modern Islam is more useful. Rippin is provocative and less likely than some other authors to write in platitudes and parrot Edward Said's Orientalism. Here again though, the focus is on history, sociology, and doctrine, without much discussion of the rituals and practice of the religion and how it is experienced by the Muslim.Were I to choose a text for a class on Islam, I would probably choose Denny's Introduction to Islam (3rd edition). However, I might also supplement it with the second half of this text. Denny tiptoes around the consequences of comptemporary militant Islam. This text does not, however this text does not do justice to the religion of Islam as phenomenon.

A good overview of Islam. It comes up a little short on some subjects, Sufism, Wahhabism, and is stronger on origins and the historical conditions that shaped the faith. Probably one of the best ways to begin your study or a good summary for a general reader.

Muslims: Their Religious Beliefs and Practices is a condensed version of a two-volume work that was published in the early 1990s. Like its predecessors, this book provides readers with a synthesis of the development of Islam from the 7th century to the early 21st century and offers insight into future activity that would influence Islam's interpretation. Rippin strives to provide a spectrum of Muslims' perceptions of their religion through scholarly activity--by Muslims and non-Muslims--dedicated to it.The seventeen chapters are organized into six parts. Topics discussed include formative elements of Islam and an Islamic identity, classical Islam and alternative versions of classical Islam, reform movements within Islam in modern times, and possible trajectories in the foreseeable future. The work is well referenced and provides an extensive bibliography for further reading.In the introduction Rippin describes his attitude as: "Avoiding scholarly analysis in order not to appear 'anti-Islamic' or to make the subject 'easy' is neither academically responsible nor respectful of Islam itself which, it seems to me, simply deserves the full rigor of analysis that humanistic and social scientific study can provide: in doing that we are in fact saying that Islam is a subject worthy of study, something which is essentially denied when a less rigorous approach is undertaken [2]." This sentiment is echoed throughout the book.While essentially a work on Islamic history, Rippin chooses to deal with issues rather then present a historically styled narrative. Its usefulness is enhanced by its emphasis on the overarching issues that make specific facts important. It contains critical discussions of the nature of the sources and the received accounts. When approaching the work from the perspective of issues, the chapters discussing per-modern times mirror those discussing contemporary times. Issues discussed in Chapter 2, "The Quran [sic]" for example are re-visited in Chapter 14 "The Quran [sic] and modernity." Other extensions are more subtle such as Chapter 7 "Ritual practice" and Chapter 15 "Issues of identity." This book synthesizes a complex and vast phenomenon like Islam with rigorous analysis and projections into the future. About the Author

Mark W. Moffett is a biologist and research associate at the Smithsonian, and a visiting scholar in the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. He has also authored four books. Called a "daring eco-adventurer" by Margaret Atwood, his writing has appeared in The Best American Science and Nature Writing and he has been a regular guest on The Colbert Report, Conan, NPR's Fresh Air, and CBS Sunday Morning.
