We studied this book in our Sunday School class and it was very interesting. It collects a lot of Ms Le Guin's writing and is very thought provoking and engaging.

Dancing at the End of the World - Ursula K. Le Guin [2014-03-10 513] "Dancing at the End of the World" (1989) is a collection of essays, talks, reviews and some travel notes by the highly esteemed author Ursula K. Le Guin. For many years I have greatly admired her novels particularly "The Lathe of Heaven". I am cautiously optimistic that by reading non-fiction books by authors I hold in high esteem I may become more nuanced in my appreciation of their fiction. I sought out this book because I had reviewed the table of contents on the ISFDB (Internet Science Fiction Data Base) and I greatly desired to read a couple of items - a book review of a C.S. Lewis collection and an essay titled "Where Do you Get Your Ideas From". Both readings were informative but the essay was of particularly interest. To summarize ideas flow up from the subconscious and are an amalgamation of life experiences. I surveyed the book from cover to cover sampling a page or two from each entry. To be honest, with one exception, and the two pieces noted I passed on the other writings. The unexpected gem of this book for this reader was a diary like essay about Ms. LeGuin's experiences during filming of her novel "The Lathe of Heaven" - note the 1980 version! Very interesting and informative indeed to this reader since I was not previously aware it had be make into a movie and as it turns out twice - but that's another story altogether.

Written as if on a vacation in the form of bad female poetry. Not worth it.

I had never read a word of Ursula K. Le Guin until I recently picked up "Dancing at the Edge of the World," a chronologically arranged collection of essays, talks and book reviews written by Le Guin during the period 1976 through 1988. It is a collection that is intended, in the author's words, "[to] provide a sort of mental biography, a record of responses to ethical and political climates, of the transforming effect of certain literary ideas, and of the changes of a mind."Each of the essays listed in the table of contents is denoted with a glyph that categorizes the essay as dealing with feminism, social responsibility, literature, or travel. This categorization gives the reader a good idea of the range of the collection and of Le Guin's interests, which extend far beyond the science fiction genre for which she is most well known.The quality of the essays is uneven. Some of the travel pieces are soporific ("Places Names," "Along the Platte" and "Over the Hills and a Great Way Off"), although they might be more interesting to readers who have been to the places Le Guin describes. Other pieces seem to suffer from the loss caused by transforming what were originally spoken presentations into writing. The feminist writings in some cases are the victim of changing times. What is useful, however, even in these weaker pieces, are Le Guin's introductions, which provide a useful contextual background that helps the reader understand the import of the essay.While some of the essays are unremarkable, there also are several exceptional writings that are worth the price of admission. I refer, in particular, to the 1988 essay, "The Fisherman's Daughter," which provides a provocative and interesting discussion of women and writing, a text that follows in the line from Virginia Woolf's "A Room of One's Own" through Tillie Olsen's "Silences," drawing heavily on both authors for another view of this much discussed literary/feminist theme. I also refer to the essays from 1986, a very good year for Le Guin insofar as the six essays included here from that year all provide interesting and worthwhile glimpses at why her writing is so well regarded. In particular, I enjoyed "Bryn Mawr Commencement Address" and "Text, Silence, Performance," two essays that illuminate the ways in which spoken and written language, and the privileging of certain communicative forms over others, affects the world.Despite the shortcomings of some of its essays, "Dancing at the Edge of the World" provides a fascinating picture of Le Guin's worldview, successfully painting the "mental biography" of one of America's more interesting and accomplished writers during one decade of her life.

Around pp. 165-167, in the essay "The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction," LeGuin discusses the possibility that the first human invention was not the weapon, but the container -- the sling, the sack, the bag, the carrier. (I remembered it as "the vessel," but that term doesn't appear in the book.) What good is generating a lot of stuff to eat if you don't have any way to get it back to camp? She argues the point persuasively and passionately.I read this book in 1991 or 1992, nearly 20 years ago. I've not seen the idea anywhere else (although she cites an anthropologist writing in 1975) but it has shaped my perception since. Not to diminish the rest of the book, but this single idea in this one essay is, I believe, worth getting the whole book for.

This was an author I had never heard of before, but I grabbed it among the other 25 from the high school library where I used to teach. I found the book to be a very mixed bag of some interesting pieces--the names piece in traveling across Us, some of the poetry, the Mills college graduation speech among them. But too many of them i just really couldn't get into. In checking some info on the author, i see she has done some great things which I agree with in many fields and she lives in my favorite US town (our daughter also lives in Portland). But I still cannot rank this book higher than a 3 (personally)

This author embraces all of her sister's qualities as experience arising in excellance. She is a wonderful writer clear and simple.

First, I really enjoyed this book. A couple of nice mysteries to "solve".It was refreshing to have a heroine who called the police with her clues and problems, rather than forging ahead like the lady in the horror movie who goes into the basement.Some twists and turns with an ending that allows for sequels.It was interesting learning a little bit about location scouting for the movies. That was an interesting choice of professions for the main characters.Now the slightly bad...I don't know if it was the author, the editor or "auto-correct", but there were several instances of incorrect word choice.Examples: taunt = a remark made to anger. The word the author wanted was taut = pulled tight. She made this error a couple of times.reign = hold royal office. The word the author wanted was rein = check or guide by pulling.Yes, I know...I am being a "nit picker", but correct use of language in a book is important. I am frequently on a blog forum and the poor grammar, spelling and lack of correct language is appalling. The author can't fix that, but it would help some readers understand what she is saying.

I think it was a good mystery idea that was weakened by too much description and inadequate character development, not to mention too much romance. Too much is explained rather than being shown by the characters' actions. The characters seemed shallow, formulaic, and incomplete to me. Some of the setting descriptions were great, however. I could 'see' the stream, for instance, and 'feel' the dampness and drizzle.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and can't wait for more. I love how Sara Rosett's books are interesting and complex without any bad language or sex. It is refreshing to read a modern mystery that relies totally on the plot to keep you interested. This books is an excellent to a new series from this author. (I love her "On the Run Series" as well.) I'm looking forward to the next installment!

I think it was an ok read but unless I missed something there were a couple of contradictions . On one trip Kate said she wanted to take a picture but left her camera at the hotel. On the same trip she said she adjusted her camera strap on her shoulder. Without giving out a spoiler in another instance, she took a memory card out of a camera and made a copy of pictures on it then gave the camera with memory card to police. She felt guilty about not sharing the evidence of the pictures with the police but since she put the memory card back in the camera then naturally the police had the pictures. And naturally they would look at them.

I normally hate these things but the author gave me hours of entertainment so I figured I owed her a few minutes of my time. I got the word sparkling from a “professional review” of this book and thought it definitely fit this writer. Her writing was witty and added another layer of entertainment as one cheered for characters that one particularly liked. The mystery was well done and I really wasn’t sure of the killer until near the end. And I have read every Agatha Christie book that was ever written so I’m not a total stranger to red herrings and other tricks of the trade. I will definitely read another book in this series and am very glad I read this one.

Kate Sharp’s boss, Kevin Dunn, is in England scouting locations for a new film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. When he fails to check in with his office staff and he misses his flight home, his employees are a bit concerned. That concern turns to worry when Kate arrives in the quaint little village of Nether Woodsmoor to find that Kevin has left all his belongings at the inn and has disappeared. With the help of Alex, a local scout, Kate sets out to find Kevin.Death in the English Countryside by Sara Rosett is the first book in the new Murder on Location series. The mystery is a good one and the characters are very likable, but the setting is the star here. It was easy to envision the beautiful stone walls, lovely cottages, and rolling green fields that make up the village of Nether Woodsmoor. Ms. Rosett has a way of describing her settings that make you feel like you are right there traveling with her characters.I’m a big fan of Ms. Rosett’s On the Run series so when I learned she had released a new book in a new series I bought it immediately. I was not disappointed. This is a lovely cozy mystery, and I hope to see more of Kate and Alex. Happy reading!

I needed a light, entertaining read after several books with heavy, emotionally charged themes. This book ticked all the right boxes. It kept me reading throughout. I finished reading it in one day.A mystery story set in a charming village in the English countryside with a murder to be solved and a touch of romance to balance the darkness. The characters were not especially well-developed, except for Kate and Alex, but the setting was drawn beautifully by the author. I could picture walking the meadows around the village, driving over the bridge and having a drink in one of the pubs. 3.5 Stars.Thank you to amazon for the “gift”. I shall be following the escapades of Kate and Alex in future books in this series.

I'm actually not a Jane Austen fan, but this story really held my interest and I read it straight through (and you don't need to have read Austen to enjoy this book). I do like 'English Cozy' mysteries, and this book combined a bit of that kind of flavor with a more modern 'flair', as well as a nice mix of British and American characters. The protagonists were quite appealing, and there were plenty of suspicious characters too. I figured it out a little sooner than I like to, since I prefer to have to really work hard to solve things before 'the big reveal', which is why it didn't get the full five stars. But I'll definitely be looking for more stories from this author. Thoroughly enjoyable!

James does talk a little out both sides of his mouth stating that you don't need school to learn, but then saying school might be appropriate for some people's learning styles. I could spend an hour on a review with this, but to get perspective on this book you should follow James on Twitter (@jamesmarcusbach) as well as attend testing conferences and engage in the CDT (Context-Driven Testing) community to get a better grasp on how to apply this. This book is a mindset change for anyone, not just testers. If you are a tester, I'd recommend also reading "Lessons Learned In Software Testing" by James Bach, after this.

I would actually rate this book a 4.5 out of 5. It's an inspiring and, to a degree, informative book on learning outside of the classroom. The author makes the case through his own experience that you don't necessarily need to go to school or follow the traditional academic path in order to be educated. Since learning styles differ among people, there are those that are not suited to classroom learning and has nothing to do with intelligence. This book is for that type of learner and provides encouragement and techniques for not only learning for a specific purpose, but also for the joy and personal enrichment. Yet, even those of us who are university educated can learn a lot from this book, mainly to appreciate self-directed learning and to expand knowledge from a single course of study.If there is a downside to the book, it's the author's use of the Buccaneer analogies to independent learning. I found it got a little old after a while, but it did not take away from the content. Also, the author introduces his "SACRED SCOWS" approach to learning, but I felt that he didn't go into enough depth at times to illustrate how it helped him to learn a particular topic. However, the author states that this method works for him and that each person should develop a method that works for them.Overall, I highly recommend this book. Particularly for a young person in high school or college age who is frustrated with school as this book provides the inspiration, motivation and some techniques to find their own path.

As far as science textbooks go, I really like this one. This book has highlighted the important topic from each paragraph which makes it easier to read. Cuts out the word fluff and just tells you what you need to know.

Great tool for acupuncture students!

I like the fact that it has questions after each chapter which helped to reenforce what was learned. The book is paperback and small so accidental folding will happen. In comparison to other microbiology books this book is straight forward and the wording is well presented to me as a student.

I bought it for class, and my professor uses it RELIGIOUSLY. All in all it is a great book, easy to follow, and not massive like some of the other science books have been.

A must read for microbiologist.
