Within the first few chapters, the reader will begin to feel almost as if caffeine is pumping through their blood as we read about near-death situations. Douglas Mawson, a great explorer and expedition leader of the Australasian Antarctic finds himself starving, crawling, and escaping dangerous situations in extreme cold weather situations. His team of men were against all odds in surviving the almost impossible horrifying events that were thrown upon them with no food, no first-aid, and no supplies to help them in their amazing journey. As those who managed to survive had to battle with fear in near-misses, and the only thing that kept them alive was their incredible spirit. This adventure is chilling from beginning to end with colorful characters, stunning photos, and an eye-opener story of courage. Entertaining, riveting, heart-pounding, and impressive. After whipping through a couple great polar exploration books, I got a copy of Alone on the Ice. (Btw, I highly recommend both of these: Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage, which is the well known account of Shackleton's ill-fated, but miraculous survival in Antarctic and Arctic Adventure: My Life in the Frozen North, which though hugely popular in its day, is something of a lost classic that is a great read filled with lots of well told dramatic adventure while [unlike Endurance] giving insight into native Eskimo culture, which is fascinating.)In "Alone on the Ice," David Roberts tells the true story of what Sir Edmund Hillary called "the greatest survival story in the history of exploration." Hillary was referring to the 1912 expedition of Australian explorer Douglas Mawson and his fellow members of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE). Mawson and cohorts set out to explore Antarctica with the intention of gathering specimens and to make scientific observations of the continent. What has left Mawson's considerable accomplishments and amazing survival story obscured by the layers of newsprint and time is--unlike Roald Amundsen and Robert Scott--he wasn't a pole bagger. Mawson, never grabbed headlines by "summiting" the south pole. Mawson and the AAE's expedition went virtually unnoticed by the public. Now, at the 100th year anniversary of the expedition, Roberts tells the story of Mawson, alone after his companions had died during the expedition, an expedition that saw them trek over 600 miles round trip while being face with 100 miles per hour winds, and left with little of their original provisions. Left as a lone explorer, Mawson was forced to make a ninety-five mile trek across the Antarctic Ice while battling extreme hunger, madness, and the deadly terrain of the continent.During his trek Mawson often had to crawl as a result of losing the flesh from the soles of his feet. And at one point, he fell into a deadly crevice that would have likely killed almost anyone else. However, Mawson, inspired by a poem by Robert. W. Service, was able to extricate himself out of the crevice with what could only be considered superhuman strength, determination, and extraordinary will. Roberts tells Mawson's story well and has seemingly done his research thorough, including some great, rarely-seen photos (one of an iced-over face is bizarre, as is the shot of an explorer's contortions to stay upright in a 100-mile an hour wind). The photos are by Frank Hurley, who is famous from his Endurance photos. In sum, this is a very engaging read. Robert's detailed description of Mawson's determination, perseverance, and courage gives Mawson the heroic recognition while provided classic adventure story entertainment.

This factual recounting of a scientific expedition to Antarctica is at times unbelievable, at times inspiring, at times tragic. The author never sensationalizes the facts or the telling of them, which makes the story even more incredible and a fantastic page-turner.

An interesting book about an amazing Antartic survival story, in which Douglas Mawson sledged alone to reach his base. I learned a great deal about Antarctica and the costs of exploration from it.

This book is essentially a biography of Douglas Mawson, the Australian Antarctic explorer who in 1912 survived a 30-day, almost 300-mile trek alone back to camp after his two teammates died. One of his teammates fell down a crevasse along with the sledge that carried most of the team's important equipment and most of its food, and the other died thereafter due to exposure, so Mawson had to survive on half or fewer rations. Mawson was a geology professor at the University of Adelaide and wanted to explore as much of the continent as possible rather than reach the South Pole (he was with Shackleton in 1908 when they came within 95 miles of the pole). He formed the Australasian Expedition with 24 members who landed and wintered over in what turned out to be the windiest spot on earth; some of the members, including Mawson, spent two winters there. The book is well-organized and Roberts is a great storyteller who argues that from a scientific standpoint the expedition achieved and explored more than those of the more famous Antarctic explorers Amundsen, Scott and Shackleton. Roberts finds little fault with Mawson and reviewed many letters, diaries and other primary sources. Roberts may have gone a little overboard defending Mawson against attacks made in 2001 by the son of one of the other expedition members. At the end of the book Roberts makes a perfunctory comment that Mawson had his faults, but the book rarely delved into them. Some people doubt Mawson's story that, after his teammates died, he fell in a crevasse to a depth of 14 feet hanging only by a rope, and in his weakened and starved condition climbed hand-over-hand most of the way, fell back down, then climbed hand-over-hand a second time to escape the crevasse. The book discusses a modern attempt (which failed) to replicate this feat and others have expressed doubt about its authenticity, but makes no comment on whether Mawson fabricated or embellished the story. One hundred years later I don't think anyone can say if the story is definitely true or not, but Roberts should at least have acknowledged that others doubt Mawson was telling the truth about it. There's good information in here, but it's an ultimately shallow experience. It's nice to see the codification of these distributed system design patterns into diagrams and names, but the book mostly seems like Kubernetes promotional material. The book relies so heavily on Kubernetes' config boilerplate to pad its content it's surprising that Kubernetes is not mentioned anywhere in the title. In addition to describing design patterns, this book is pretty rigorous in its adherence to its own simple pattern: Introduce a design pattern with a name and a diagram, describe it briefly, give examples of its practical application with accompanying Kubernetes configurations. Would have liked to see more discussion of the evolution of these patterns along with some case studies. Works OK as a practical companion piece to Kleppmann's Designing Data-Intensive Applications, but at the same MSRP, either this is overpriced or DDIA is a steal. If you have to choose one of them at $44.99, Kleppmann should be your first choice, hands down.

Went over couple of chapters so far. I will start by reviewing it 4. If you are an experienced developer then most of these patterns you have already applied at some point. The book goes over explaining them nicely with practical scenarios. A figure for EACH scenario would have been nice though.However, like other reviewers mentioned the author should not have adopted to using Kubernetes without mentioning it in pre-req. Examples don't provide much value this way. I have read "The Kubernetes Book" by Nigel so was able to understand concepts such as Pod and YAML syntax. The book could have been written keeping the container/micro-service orchestration abstract.

I’ve joked over the last year that Kubernetes is going to translate my 20 years of hard-earned distributed systems experience into a few yaml files.This book is the beginning of that process. This book outlines the major patterns used in the design of large scale, heterogenous applications in simple, digestible terms. It gives a common language for us all to use as we build systems in the future. While there is still much room for implementation and execution, this book covers the major patterns I’ve seen in both online processing and batch.This book won’t solve whether or not you should build your system as distributed microservices or a monolith, but it will help you design your services once you’ve decided you need them.

Very superficial. Describes a few ways to build some simple distributed applications without discussing the fundamental aspects and tradeoffs of those systems. Most of the information is easily available anywhere on the Internet. If you're looking for a good book on designing distributed systems, don't buy this book. Instead buy the Martin Kleppmann book "Designing Data Intensive Applications".

If you're looking for an application manual for distributed systems, this is the book for you.All you theory-heads, read this first, then split off into the topics that interest you the most.

I loved the author's brevity in order to stay focused on the larger patterns found in distributed systems. This book is heavily tilted to the Kubernetes engineer, but that's EXACTLY what I wanted. I still love paper books and having a lightweight copy I can take almost anywhere, but with material that is anything but lightweight give me the best value of all. Thanks Brendan Burns - awesome job!

Finally a great book from a holistic perspective on distributed system design patterns! Great use of mix language examples to compliment the explanations while not going too deep into the actual codification of such patterns. So happy with this cookbook. The first chapter has basic cupcake and frosting recipes with no frills. The following chapters are chock full with interesting recipes and decorating ideas. The flavors are exciting and fun and I can't wait to make more cupcakes more often.The decorating ideas are fun and not so complicated that I won't be able to achieve a reasonable likeness to the pictures.The recipes give extra tips and tell you how you can use a box of cake mix if you don't want to make them from scratch. The one recipe I've tried so far (candy bar cupcakes) was extremely easy. The most complicated things I had to do was separate eggs and test for doneness with a toothpick.Some of the recipes use the basic cupcake / frosting recipe and then add other ingredients to make them different & original.I would definitely recommend this cookbook for anyone who likes to bake but is tired of the same old boring recipes.*******Update 11.01.11 - I've been making cupcakes about twice a month now since I've purchased this book and get rave reviews for each new recipe. The added ingredients definitely change the flavors and the decorating (so far) is a snap.I would recommend if you're going to start making cupcakes more often that you buy a few accessories to make putting the batter into the pan and frosting easier. I've purchased a simple decorating bag with two different large tips - with this I can frost 24 cupcakes in minutes and they look professional. I also love the 'batter scoops' I've purchased. It helps ensure that my cupcakes are of a consistent size - which again makes them look prettier in the end.

This book is excellent for anyone that likes to make cupcakes! There are cupcakes for any occasion and cupcakes for all of the major & minor holidays. Most cupcakes use ingredients that you usually have in the house anyway. There are sections on how to bake good cupcakes, how to frost cupcakes & how to store/tote cupcakes. Then, you have basic recipes for cupcakes and frosting, kids' party cupcakes, holiday cupcakes & special occasion cupcakes. This book is a must-have for cupcakes!

I love this book! I checked it out of the library and then used so many recipes from it I decided I had to have my own copy. I like how many of the recipes are "from scratch" recipes, and then there is a cake mix version for quicker turnaround or for those who don't feel as comfortable in the kitchen baking from scratch. The section on holiday cupcakes is especially fun.

It's a beautiful book with great decorating ideas but the basic yellow and chocolate cake recipes in the front were disappointing as far as flavor and texture, especially the yellow. I usually use box cakes and wished I had done so for our Thanksgiving dinner. I may try again and double the vanilla and butter but WON'T take to a family event to share without a taste test ;/

Of all the cupcake books I've seen or bought, I prefer this one to the rest. They put the basic cake recipes and the frostings in the front (plus a few other recipes throughpout the book) and even show you how to apply cake mix instead. Then it shows you how to apply the recipes in so many decorative, imaginative ways for holidays, birthdays or just for fun. Truly great ideas, my friends and I found ourselves oohing and aaahing at all the great cupcake designs the book displays. I've tabbed several I MUST make as soon as I can and have done a few already to rave reviews. Not so difficult but just the "Why didnt I think of that?" sort. Buy it, you won't be sorry.

This book arrived quickly. It is in nearly perfect condition and it is exactly what I needed as a teacher of this course.

I had to take this class as a home study and just got the book from Amazon instead for a fraction of the price. The book is used but it wasn't in any terrible condition. It was almost like brand new.After having it for 3-4 months, I was able to return it for almost half the money that I paid for it, so that is really awesome!

My 6 year old is really into the avengers and loves to read any stories he can find about them. Most of the library stories revolve around Captain America, The Hulk, Iron Man, or the Avenger team. This was a great book for him because it focused on one of the other avenger characters that he didn't know as much about. The illustrations are good and the story gave a lot of information about who Hawkeye is, where he came from, how he got his name, and how he became an Avenger. My son really enjoys the book--I would recommend this to anyone looking for an Avenger-themed kids book.

My grandson has a special attachment to the Avengers, especially Hawkeye, and loved this birthday gift. I will certainly add to his collection.

My boys enjoyed it but the print is too small for them to read with double clicking on each passage which slows down the reading.

Good book. I brought this for my nephew to practice his reading. Good story about brothers and teamwork. Must buy for Avengers fans.

Not ready for prime time - font shows up in different sizes in the same sentence. Unable to actually read the book. Shame on Amazon for putting such a book out.

I signed up for Amazon kindle unlimited which has a lot of free books to choose from which I think is a great thing to have. The only thing I would like to request from Amazon or the authors of these books is to add more of the world of reading kindergarten and level 1 books to the kindle unlimited program. I started reading these books to my nephews for their requested night time/ bed time stories. The level 1 books don't have too many words for a five year old but they do have big words that you have to explain to them what they mean, such as orphanage. I don't mind taking a little extra time explaining what some of the bigger words mean however, it would be nice to have a larger variety of books to choose from that I don't have to pay for since I'm already paying for the kindle unlimited program.
